Thanks Nick have picked up a pair of the Mach 4's and very keen to try it now after your video. Previously used the Clifton 7 and Rincon by Hoka - two great shoes in my opinion.
Having run in 3 other top running shoe brands over a 9 year marathon/ultra marathon career, I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to feel as incredible as I do running in the Hoka Mach 4, best description I can give is effortless smooth rhythm, what more could you want, spent over a month deliberating on them, worked out to be the best decision ever, if you are considering them get off this post and purchase these ASAP
Agree with you that Mach 4 is similar to the Pegasus Turbo. That is what I was thinking the entire time I was taking my first run in the Mach 4. Feels a lot like the Peg Turbo 2. Loved that shoe so much I bought 2 of them.
Definitely a similar vibe to the Peg Turbos - I went back to the Turbos yesterday just as a comparison and found that I actually preferred the Mach 4. The upper/lockdown fit feels much better for me on the Mach 4 and I think Hoka have got the balance of comfort and pop spot on in these shoes. Like you I'm a massive fan of the Speeds so these beauties are going to relieve a bit of the mileage burden off those!
Great review thank you , got the Mach4 and I’m delighted with its performance . I use the endorphin speed for my interval and speed sessions and Mach4 for everything else . Looking forward to your 100mile review on the Mach4!
The outside upper of my Peg Turbo 2's did start to come away, but only after about 800 or so miles! I retired them somewhere about 900 miles total in them. The Mach 4 is definitely something I've got my eye on to replace my Peg 37's when they die. It's give me a rotation of Hoka Mach 4, Adidas SL20 & Adidas Adizero Adios Pro!
That’s some impressive mileage on the Peg Turbos :). And that’s a very solid rotation all round I’d say, though the Mach’s might not last as long as the Peg 37s, they have a more enjoyable ride for me!
@@TheRunTesters that's good to hear, yeah the Peg 37's are seeming durable but I still can't make up my mind on the ride at 350 miles in! Some days the React foam feels brilliant, others they feel stiff and unresponsive.
I'm looking to buy it this month, I have my rotation as Pegasus 38 and Asics Magic Speed as my carbon plate, but this just looks like a nice shoe for an easy steady ride :)
@@TheRunTesters it's quite firm, decent bounce and it took a few runs and different lacing to kind of settle into shape for my feet, which unfortunately are like flippers, so wide toebox is quite important, but overall very decent speed shoe, instantly noticed myself picking up paces as soon as I felt the pop from the plate. A solid 7/10 :D
Great review, love how the endorphin speed has a way of sneaking in a mention- I’d like to see you worm it into the next trailroc or mudclaw inov8 review
Thank you for your review, well done. When you mentioned the endorphin speed, it confirmed me that you know what you are talking about :). Only one remark, the shoes on the hoka website in size 10 are sold out in all colours. Do you use apple watch as daily watch? also for training?
Thanks! Ah surprised it’s sold out in any size, Hoka normally good on that front. I use the Apple Watch yep, usually with another watch I’m testing (Garmin Enduro at the moment). There’s a great app called Workoutdoors that makes the Apple Watch good enough for my training!
Good review. I find the fit to be a cross between Nike Vomero 14, Brooks Hyperion Tempo and Nike Pegasus 35 Turbo. I really love how firm/stout the heel collar is on the Mach 4. The feeling underfoot is responsive, nimble and not too soft. They really killed it with this shoe. Hoka outsoles have always been frustrating and this one is no exception. The rubberized EVA outsoles aren’t good enough as daily trainers for people looking to get 4-600 miles out of a shoe. This is a department that Nike does a great job of. If the Mach 4 had a Nike style rubber outsole it could be one of the greatest daily trainers ever. One other small gripe I have is the slightly narrow upper that leads into a wider outsole. I just wish they made the upper as wide as the outsole. I can feel my pinky toe bones protruding a bit on these shoes and I don’t have wide feet
Thanks! Sounds like you’ve had a very similar experience to me. Really hoping this outsole surprises me with its durability but not looking that promising
As a loyal Hoka Clifton user, I really want to see how the mach 4 stacks up to my clifton 6 and 7. I might bite the bullet and get these based on all the great youtube reviews so far. They also won't break the bank unlike the alphafly or vaporfly.
It's not as soft a shoe as the Clifton, but has more speed in it! From my experience of Cliftons they are more durable than the Mach looks like it will be though. Let us know if you go for it and what you think of the shoe!
Great review - just got these, had a love/hate with the Mach 2 (some great and fast runs and races up to 230 miles), rubbed and blisters on runs since, so avoided Hoka's until this one...!
I’ve got these coming tomorrow. It was a coin toss between these and the saucony endorphin speed. Price and the style compared to the speeds done it for me.
Thanks, and sorry, keep meaning to get back in them, but so much going on with stuff to test, so can't say much more than I did in review on durability yet!
Thanks! The Mach 4 is a softer ride than the Infinity, so might be down to how much you like the firmer, smooth ride of the Nike. I like the Mach 4 a lot on easy runs myself. The Infinity will be a lot more durable though!
It’s stable, though maybe not as much as the Infinity, which has that extended heel clip in particular. No problems with stability on the Mach for me though
Thanks! It is quite narrow in toe box, found it OK in the mid foot, but I do have quite narrow feet. Wide fit might work if you are worried about the toe box in particular!
Hey Nick! I want to try these to substitute my Rincon2 for the long runs, I think it will be a good choice. I have the Clifton7 also but do not enjoy them on the long runs, find myself battling the shoe, working hard, too squishy. An unrelated question: for a 10k TT, which one between Rocket X, Speed and Adizero Pro (the shoes I have)? Thanks! Cheers from Portugal!
Hi! I think given that situation these would be a good choice for those long runs. They’re softer than the Rincon, but not so squishy like the Cliftons, I’ve loved cruising long runs in them. Hmm for the TT, close one! I haven’t tried the Adizero Pro, but I might lean Speed over Rocket X, just. Both will be quick though, so whatever you feel like on the day I reckon!
What do you think of Mach 4 vs Puma Velocity in terms of leg protection and bounce / fun? I haven't seen the video of Velocity so you might not have it though..
I’m just one run into testing the Velocity. Like it so far, softer and bouncier than I expected, but more running to do! A few of us have it so we’ll do a multi-tester vid :)
Hi I’ve tried the tempo and rebel 1, not the others. Both the tempo and rebel are firmer and faster i’d say, the mach 4 is more comfortable and a better easy day shoe while still being quick. The Rebel 2 sounds excellent though, hoping to test it out!
Hi! So they’re quite similar but Rincon has a firmer ride. I prefer the feel of the Mach 4 and found it just as happy at speed as the Rincon, while also being nicer for easy stuff
@@TheRunTesters thanks! I'll be interested to see how the wear progresses. Had a quick look under my Rincons this morning and, to be fair, they're holding up pretty well at nearly 400kms
The Mach is more stable than the Novablast and softer than the Pegasus, I rate it as quicker than both too. The Pegasus will definitely outlast it though, especially if you go off-road at all!
@@TheRunTesters yeah I mean they're still going to be great shoes regardless, but we just seem to "roll" backwards in a way already landing at the front 😂
I have both but the Speed is a different class but the March 4 is great for mixing up your runs, as it brill and slow and quicker efforts. Speed just makes you run fast and smile.
i really love your reviews.except i is really hard find a shoe for me 110kg+ newbie runner to now what is god. a shoe for a runner 80kg not sure gonna work whit 110. I experienced before when i got a shoe couple years ago was cushion big soft padding went to cement after 4-5 weeks whit nine weight. wast almost 130kg that time. Any chance you can get in your running tester grup a little more heavy newbie runner? right now i using brooks ghost 13 so far okay. looking for a sec shoe before summer so can rotate. as a slow runner 14 min-km any recommendation? Brooks Beast 20 i got as recommendation?
I find that the Mach 4 offers zero arch support for my feet. I don't use supportive shoes, yet the large gap under my arch feels weird. I though these will be more stable than the Endorpin speed, and I would think they are, but the gap under the arch is an issue and flared up my ITB issue on the first run.. Is it just me that the Mach 4 looks like a cheap knock-off of a shoe compared to any other main brands out there ? It just seem to be a real low budget quality :(

Awesome thanks for your take! Will keep trying to source a pair. Testing the Metaspeed Sky at the moment which I love, Asics doing good things in 2021
This shoe in the 6s disappears under your foot. When I was above 8 minute pace, the heel felt a hit clunky but not horrible.

Ah that's a shame, Hoka normally good on having stock!
I am yet to find one durable Hoka shoe. My Rincon 2 look like I’ve been running on cheese graters
The rubberized outsole on this one isn’t too bad actually
@@paddywiggle My Carbon X outsole is shredded.
Looks wise . Turbo looks a lot better
Mach 4 vs Velocity Nitro 2?
Mach 4 vs. Peg. Turbo 1?
Ironic that Nike tries to copy Hoka's maximalist trend, stops the Turbo series, then gets undercut by the Mach 4.
In Australia the speed and mach 4 same price but you can never buy the speed 😀
It's a tough shoe to get hold of. Saucony missing a trick here by not making enough or limiting the run on these.
It’s not good value if 80k has made it look like that ... buy nice or buy twice.. That shoe looks like it has the durability of confetti
It’s certainly a concern with these rubberised outsoles, so will keep using them to see how it holds up
4:00 2021 already bro
