Forging a Sloyd Axe: Creating a Traditional Swedish Woodworking Tool

  • In this video I forge a prototype sloyd axe.
    This was a very fun challenge. The idea is that I am going to send it to @The Spoon Crank for them to check it out and hopefully we will start making them available later this year :)

    Hopefully I'll build one but don't have expect to equal
    Would be helpful to know weight and measurements to begin with.

    Great looking axe and an excellent job making it!! It would be great to see you're selling these. It would be the one I'd buy since the only wood I cut would be for my smoker

    Very impressive grind! Being able to "push" through the paper is not an easy task! Especially with a thicker bevel like on an axe!

    OK I'm inspired. After I try making a kris, I'm going to make a Halterbrad. Spring steel should work. I haven't finished my power hammer. So I think I'm going to drill a hole for the handle and then I'm going to drive a drift into that. Piercing a thick piece of metal
    By hand is too much work. Forging is fun.

    I make spoons, bowls and kuksas. I can tell now they are going to say go ahead...make a lot. I am throwing my name already in there. I would like the chissel axe with the bevel on the right. Well done

    You know... I used to have an Axe really similar to that one that I used for bow making (I generally used it for shaping the profile of the bow)

      Well, that type of ax is typically used to shape spoons so it would surprise me if it works great for bows too

    As someone who lacks the powertools but has all the hand tools, apprenticing to my great grandfather and such, what would you recommend in place of the rounded power hammer bit used to draw out the metal?

      @ thank you very much! I have been working for a while now restoring old tools my great grandfather made, namely Tomahawks and skinning knives mostly. But now I’m interested in trying to make my own pieces from scratch as well!

      @ I very much would like to see that video. I am trying to get a linseed oil finish on an axe and can’t get more than a bronze color. Maybe I’m not getting it hot enough to darken the oil? But I’m concerned about over tempering the edge.

      It was a little tricky. However i started using ”iton mountain flux” you can usually order it from farriers shops etc. Very nice flux

    Hello, i just bought some Swedish (known name) axe and i see very small "crack" on the bottom of the eye. I find out from other people comments that, this is normal.. Can you, as a professional blacksmith comment on that, is it normal, you see a lot of those on your axes? Thank you.

      what do you mean by crack? you mean like a cold shut, or that the steel is broken?
