It is interesting how ones perspective changes based on experience, E.J. & Simo will be two of the greatest players ever to touch a bowling ball, but when they comment on the purple hammer it reminds me of all of the stuff us old guys have seen. I bowled in the 70’s with plastic and the yellow dot was “the ball” and the on night in league, guy pulls out a black angle, shoots a 300 out of the box! Pro shop sold 80 in a week. Ball didn’t really look that great on the lane, but it hit like a truck. Game changer.
The biggest ball in history to me is the blue hammer. When the first one came in to our center, everyone gathered around, because back then people didn’t buy new balls that often, so everybody wanted to see. Came in a nondescript cardboard box, we cracked it open and found the ugliest, most wonderful blue bowling ball anyone had ever seen, ball appeared to be lathe turned and left unfinished.
Ball motion was amazing giving us the ability to swing the whole lane for the first time ever. This was a true game changer and one that endures to this day, makes the purple hammer possible. I have 2 OG blue hammers in the bag right now.
Next came the xcalibur which was amazing but for me, uncontrollable.
In the last 10 years I have collected and thrown almost every urethane ever made, at one point had about 40 examples, I have honor scores with plastic, rubber and urethane and maybe one with resin.
I bowl in a wood house built in 1958 with above ground ball returns that has had only 16 300 games and 3 800 series in its history, it took 28 years for the first 300.
The problem with trashing urethane these days is that it is a legacy of the modern game and you can’t destroy the history of your sport or delegitimize it because you don’t like it or understand it.
After all every new bowler probably got his start throwing a urethane house ball.
I have a purple hammer on order, hope it is a good ball, is it a game changer?, probably not in the way that the Xcalibur was.
I love the modern game and PBA but I do think that if you see an old lefty from a wood house, throwing his trusty old blue hammer, you should probably cut him some slack.

This was one of about 4 half hour long videos I’ve watched without skipping anything in quite a long time. To the contrary, I rewound a couple times to make sure I wasn’t missing things lol. Fascinating stuff.

Great video, I actually thought that it was rather awkward to hear Ron say when Simo bowled a backup ball that Ron felt he would have disrespected him and to me that was very off the wall and rude then EJ came in and said what was needed to be said and that is, We do what we have to to win. I wonder how Ron felt when he first saw Belmo throwing with two hands while mowing everyone down that came in his path :)

I've been looking for some content where people discuss the nuances and intricacies of bowling. I know we're a long ways off from having a gameday panel on ESPN talking about it, but this is a great step towards that. Keep up the great work Ron!

I would have loved to hear what EJ’s go-to adjustment is for a 250-250-ring ten-ring ten-ring ten situation. I realize it’s not always the same, but there has to be one thing he would try first most times.

It’s really all about how a ball match up with your roll for me a house ball seams to line up with me better then the pro ball as long as the lane isn’t to oily

Ronald did you know that the PBA, honored the SWAG LINE bowling balls in the PBA, wanting to ask you about those, also i’m listening to you guys talking about the purple hammer the swag line I seen a comparison of the purple hammer against the swag purple ball and on top of that it’s a Asymmetrical, I think it was on EJ’s patches he wears on his shirt? BowlerX that’s right, forgot the guys name who bowls for them when new balls come out but it’s on bowlerX?

I want to play against any pro bowler that will be there Tuesday or Wednesday. I’m scheduling an appointment for me and my sponsor, my name is Chris Austin!!! I’m going to be on the show one day and it’s only been a year since I’ve started bowling. I want my name to be well known and I would like to start with this.

I have heard so many stories about this purple hammer. I had the original when it first came out and was not impressed at all with it. To me its just a urethane ball. Rolled just like it as well.

The bottomline is you beat the bowlers you are competeing against regardless of equipment or technique. You are setting yourself up to make an excuse for failure if you see it any other way.
