Bro exactly. New westworld is overdramatized, and too technical talk. The original was just about humanoid robots becoming corrupted by a virus. This one is like, “oh what if they start to think for themselves” that’s like every advanced Ai story ever.

@@wormfood83 Asimov did indeed invent a genre of analysing artificial neurotypes and their associated behaviours. Really they are about human neurotypes and how the human brain works. Or, how humans react to these constructs. Very little of his work is about robots turning human. I don't recall R Daneel wishing he was human.

the nice thing about Westworld season 1 is it really stands alone as a complete story (like a mini series). I stopped watching after season 1 and was pretty satisfied with it ending there; sort of like an open ending in which the implications of a robot rebellion is enough to be a satisfying conclusion to that story. based on what I have heard of season 2 and 3 I think i made a very wise decision to not bother continuing watching it.

Probably the biggest dive in quality that I've seen between the first and second season of a TV show. I couldn't even make it to the end of S2. And yes, it is also the purest exemple of a series that was initially devoid of modern politics, turned über-woke in an instant, and never looked back. Quite fascinating, in that regard.

Here's the thing though: TV shows have always been "woke" (whatever that means, every person has their own definition) and political, they have always flavored shows. Star Trek is one of the most "woke" shows ever and it came out 50 years ago. It has plenty of politics in it. Heck, every episode was more or less about the times it was made in. Mary Tyler Moore was the same. All in the Family, MASH... all "woke" and all political and all top shows of their day. Being "woke" and political is not among Westworld's problems.

"How can a show that started out so good, end up being so bad?"
I'm assuming that's a rhetorical question, because it seems to happen to 80% of shows that actually end up getting a finale season. Here's a better question: how do shows that start out bad or mediocre improve by leaps in later seasons? That's something so rare than when it happens it's akin to finding an actual unicorn or trapping lightening in a bottle.
The show that comes to mind, because it's the only one that I can think of is "The Leftovers." I liked season one more than many people did, it was a depressing, but it was different. Season two was like a whole different show and I looked forward to it every week. Then somehow the final season passed them all, it was almost perfect.

If I could buy a screenplay from a tv show, I would for that first season. I was so excited for the 2nd season, as we all were, and it’s because of how good that first season was, is why it is so tragic how far it fell. It WAS the next big thing. Haven't seen the show, but I'm familiar with the source material. Even if you strip away the deficiencies of the show, it solidifies to me the principle that some stories and worlds are inherently limited. Another of Crichton's works, Jurassic Park, is exactly the same - it's not a balloon you inflate to infinity. It doesn't make any difference to the woke mob, because they can't create or imagine inside a universe like Star Wars, with almost limitless potential, but it's even more evident with JP and this.
Some universes only exist to tell specific stories, and some stories exist to explore a universe. Knowing which is which is crucial.

    • @HerculesBallsInc
      @HerculesBallsInc 2 роки тому +2

I tend to be of the other mind. You can tell almost any story or use almost any idea... it's just that some of them require a lot more talent to pull off than others. Perhaps you would account for that as just adding more ideas instead of just adapting existing ones. One needs to only scroll through the comments here to see all kind of ideas how the idea of Westworld might have expanded.
For example, what if other worlds had similar awakenings, but with very different outcomes due to their settings and culture? Would an awakened robot like the outer, real world or would it - like us - long for the simplicity of the fake world from which it came? What if a group of awakened robots started their own society... would they be prone to all the problems of historical human societies or have entirely new ones?
Science fiction is rife with these kinds of ideas and it shouldn't (in theory) be too difficult to adapt some of them over. But the cynic in me suggests that the writers of Westworld didn't even want new ideas or new story. They wanted something entirely different. Something which is unfortunately not entertaining at all. Bait-and-switch is an all-too-common tactic for Hollywood activists these days.

Similarly, I would love to know if Miss Kathy actually thought the scripts she ultimately approved were objectively better, or if she conciously chose the shittier scripts because they were politically acceptable to her? I wonder if she's even self-aware enough to make a distinction between those two motivations? Regardless, the most wonderful irony in the world is that Miss Kathy set out to prove that she herself, and women in general, were the real genius behind the some of the most beloved stories and characters in the history of film. But through a truly remarkable display of hubris and ineptitude, she has done the exact opposite. Agree season one was amazing but also liked season 2. Season 3 for me was another highlight because the series evolved into something completely new and it was done with amazing quality! The first episode of season 3 is probably one of the best things we ever got on TV. I am looking forward to season 4 and can't wait to see it. I love this show. For me this is how Sci-Fi should look like! 100%

I still think the first season of Westworld was the greatest season of any series. The ideas, the production, the script, the acting were amazing.
While season 2 was patchy, I loved episode 4, Riddle of the Sphinx. It was only marred by the ending, with the ridiculous Delos approach [spoiler alert] of burning failed products and their test environments, rather than simply shutting off the faulty android and cleaning up after its mess. Yes, we get it - it's digital hell. That final scene was so on the nose.

I haven't seen a show take such a nosedive from season one to season two since the second season of Heroes. Westworld works best as a one and done show. I'll just pretend like everything after season one didn't happen just like I pretend that everything after Terminator 2 didn't happen.

"Kiksuya" (from the second season) is only episode of the entire series that's worth a damn.

I vividly remember "Person of Interest" from Jonathan Nolan. It started okay, but got good and in the end it was just top notch, idk.
Easy to see where did first season of Westworld came from, really.

I'm really liking season 4 of Stranger Things. This was impressive because I was locked and loaded ready to hate it.

Yeah, I thought season 2 and season 3 were boring slogs. Didn't care about season 4 at all, but a guy was watching it at work so I decided to join. I was very surprised. They pay off their set ups in a satisfying way. I'm glad I watched it and look forward to the end of it next week.

Season 1 of Altered Carbon was decent, Season 2 lost it's way quite a bit imo.

I'm a big fan of the WW universe. The films, that short lived TV series in the early 80s, so I was curious what they'd do with this show. We can all pretty much agree S1 was something awesome, worthy of rewatching. I was confused through most of S2. Of course you had the wanna be big brains saying you just didn't "get it" if you didn't like it. I thought the ending was interesting, that's about it. Then I started watching S3 with a friend who was also a fan. We did the first 3 episodes and my plan was to watch the rest on my own. I never went back to the show after those first 3 episodes. I just don't care anymore. Zero hype for S4.
