WU LYF- Go Tell Fire To The Mountain ALBUM REVIEW
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 чер 2011
- Listen: • Video
WU LYF's debut album rides in on a tidal wave of reverb and eccentric yelps from the band's lead singer. While it does have a uniform sound and a style, I feel like the style drowns out what this band has to offer in this songs most of the time. The echoes make their instruments bounce off one another in a wild mess that's more disorienting than interesting.
I like the ingredients, but the batter tastes a little off to me, I guess.
What are you feeling on this album? Loving it? Hating it? Why? What should I review next?

WU LYF- GO TELL FIRE TO THE MOUNTAIN / SELF-RELEASED / 2011
Coming here 7 years later to let you know you are wrong. This. Album. Is. Amazing.
I disagree completely. I just revisited it, and feel strongly that this is one of the standout albums of the decade so far. To me it embodies the zeitgeist of world turmoil, upheaval, and revolution. Best tracks: 1- Concrete Gold, 2- 14 Crowns For Me & Your Friends, 3- Dirt
9/10
Sangye Ince-Johannsen I still jam out to it, a timeless record
Same, he is just talking nonsense, he is allowed to have his own opinion but this review simply sucks haha
damn fool..we usually see eye to eye. this is by far the best album of our entire generation.
+island high Hell yes. Glad someone else thinks so too.
Next is his new band LUH.
I miss Wu Lyf :(
I don't think you could be further off the mark with this review.
Best album of the music history ever so far
Dallou Papon Totally agree, been listening to it on and off for 4 years and it blows my mind every time. I got the 'wucifix' tattoo as a tribute to this album.
O MAN NONONONONONONO 10/10
no, no, no, never.
theneedledrop no fun. not ever.
theneedledrop THIS WAS LIKE A 7 OR 8/10. THEY DIDNT DESERVE A 5. MAKING AN ALBUM LIKE THIS ISNT EASY OR A COMMON THING EITHER BECAUSE ITS UNIQUE IN ALOT OF WAYS. THE LEAD SINGER JUST BASED ON HIS PASSIONATE VOCALS GIVES THIS ALBUM AN AUTOMATIC 6/10. YOUR TURNING INTO THE SKIP BAYLESS OF MUSIC LOL
nah bro, nah.
Commenting from July 2020 here - was super into the album when it came out and gotta say.... it's gotten better with time. This thing still holds up. The negative aspects of the album Anthony talks about in his review are exactly what makes this album unique and extraordinary. This is a hell of an album. It holds up because it's true passion, no bull shit.... Also, no wonder they broke up. The lead must have been a little bat shit crazy to make this thing and the rest of the band mates couldn't hang.
it's really a masterpiece imo
For me, got tell fire,and I say this with every seriousness, is the best album I've ever listened to. It's aesthetic of reverb and secrecy and hidden lives clashed wonderfully with the emotion and intertwining and dramatic instrumental arrangement. For me, it's a triumph, a band that choose to a
I’ve been revisiting this incredible album every day, the last few weeks, and it’s more astonishing than I initially believed it was when it released. I loved it in 2011, and it’s easily a top 3 of the 2010 era for me. This review seems so off, and almost a negative response due to how well it was received by so many other critics/fans back then. I got into it before it’s official US release through a friend, and saw their 1st nyc show at knitting factory Brooklyn, back in 2011, incredible, however, this album still holds up as one of the best of the 2010s. Who fucking cares about how they went about marketing? They seemingly came out of nowhere,sold out a few U.S. dates, embarked on a proper U.S. tour, infamous Letterman performance, and were gone forever within 2 years, but they left us with an album that will forever be an incredible standout of the 2010s, that has only gotten better with age, some of which feels even more relevant and ahead of its time, now.
Anthony, the claim “ they don’t use Reverb for anything interesting, but to sound bigger”? C’mon, you are aware that there are so many various types of reverb, and purposes behind using a lot of it. Making your guitar or drums sound fuller is a major usage of reverb. It has more purposes than just ambient trails, drips, or time lapse. If any 4 piece band utilized reverb in a way that was advantageous, necessary, fitting, and was a major factor in defining their sound, They were/are a perfect example of using it as a necessary tool to sculpt their sound. They recorded in a church , bc they needed such a vast , open space to achieve such a massive, textured sound, especially with so much reverb on the drums, organ, guitars, etc. Had they recorded this exact album , in the way they did, in a smaller traditional studio setting, it would have been a muddied, murky mess. . I’m unsure if you had never seen them play live, during the 2 times they played the northeast U.S., but I believe this review deserves a redux. I don’t see how any numerical 1-10 rating system could ever put this album at anything under an 8, and it has seemed to grow even better with age. Your opinion is your opinion, which is completely subjective, and that’s fine, but when I look back on the 2010s, this album was an absolute standout, and definitely deserves a redux review.
9/10 for me
See Pitchfork’s 8.4 review that goes into the merits of the album fairly comprehensively , and presents a different point of view than Anthony’s. It’s all subjective, but a 5/10 is pretty baffling.
its fucking amazing.
Just to say everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but in my opinion this album is the best one of the 21st century. Every song has a unique sound behind it, and each song captures my heart and imagination. They had the most passionate and unique sound that no other band can make. My favorite band forever! WU LYF
youve basically just said how much it blew your mind, but you cant deal with it
Coming back to say I love this album with all my heart. One of the more interesting listens of the decade for me
Yeah it's one of the best, you should try The Lonesome Crowded West and The Ides, you may like them.
Completely missed out on this one Anthony 'failedforonce'tano
@philosivas i'll try to do more of that in the future. :-)
@InsertProfileName was the live show really good?
Six years on and I'm still amazed over this album and how it keeps growing on me and I really can't understand why not more people know about this album. It seems more and more like the "Unknown Pleasures" of our time (not kidding).
Respect theneedledrop and I think you are a true reviewer in a world of dumb ass opinions. I would really like to see a RE-REVIEW of this album - 6 years down the line. And please, listen to it at least three times before doing so. I don't care how you grade it, I'm just curious what you would think today.
@TehSkullKrusher was it?
I know I'm late but the way you think about them not giving interviews and staying low-profile is on you, not on them.
What counts is the music and it is bloody fantastic.
It provides energy, emotion and inspiration and their concerts were brilliant.
For me a highlight record since the 90s
@matthewjamal it did?
Yeah, I think you're takin an L on this one Fantiny
@TheWahnbriefe glad you had a good time! did they bring the cellist on that tour, too?
You spent the entire review talking about WU LYF's marketing, which is proof it worked. If all the critics talk about is the image that WU LYF associates with their music than it's all the fans are going to talk about.
@SageCrowIey glad to hear your piece on it. thanks for commenting. :-)
@finbowolfgang yeah, i think there have been 3-4 5s this month. guess there were just a lotta albums I'm "meh" on this month.
"He screams and yelps like it's the end of the world"- That is kind of the point... maybe consider the social impact of this album before you review the music because it's not just a few songs it is the summary of a movement... a revolutionary one.
preach it
@tokyo007 i'll be doing that video at the end of this month...i'll have cal list out his favorite albums, too!
@Itasattc yeah, you can't keep cal away from the romane lettuce. he just goes nuts for it.
@synth77 thanks for the kind words! :-)
@jober939 i no has an ipod. :-(
10
@lizardking392 hahahahaha. glad you liked it. :-P
Still one of the best records of all time.
@IamYourEvilOne are there people who are being brought here by reddit?
@TacticOgre it's ok. *hugs*
I'm gonna put my 3 favourites and hope that me and Chris are the same!! :D
1. Summas Bliss
2. Dirt
3. We Bros
A perfect 10, you're insane. I hope you changed your mind you naughty boy.
UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA (SELF-TITLED)!
The problem with this 'marketing strategy' arguement is that the band (WU LYF in this case but Palma Violets are a victim of this too) did not intend this as a 'marketing strategy' other people (usually reviewers and journalists) are the ones fixated by it not the band
@pierreerichexum hahaha. you're not alone!
Hi, 2023 here. This album is still one of the most overlooked album of modern time. Wouldn’t be surprised if sometime in the future it gets the recognition it deserves. To me, this is the ”Unknown Pleasures” of the 2010’s.
I disagree, but hay ho, whatever! About 8 years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and was already a bit of a mess mentally. Being a whole ‘I’m gonna put a face on for everyone so they don’t feel bad for me’ kinda guy I just went about life the same way as always during chemo ( against my dr’s rec). During the late insomnia-tic evenings caused by treatment, I felt more capable of experiencing the trauma I was going through. This album with its emotional tones and almost guttural, animalistic vocals as well as it’s fantastic use of rhythmical drum/ bass coordination let me release some previously guarded emotions. It made me experience life. It for a long time was a big no go for listening after I was cured, as it held too much. However in the last few weeks I’ve been able to listen to it and feel rejuvenated. I personally see it as something I will listen to for the rest of my life, but you know, that’s just me. Give it a listen, it might connect to you in a way you don’t expect. I love it.
never was aware of their image or popularity until just now actually, guess i live in a cave or something... just listened to the album when i saw it on pitchforks best new music and quite enjoyed it!
30,000?!?!? Man I remember when you were sending out thank-you's for 10,000...that wasn't that long ago. you're owning music reviews on youtube! congrats
@dotters123 yep
@MrSplatterPlatter have fun!
Even after listening to it just once, I can tell this will is probably my favorite release of the year thus far. I love the power that every instrument on this album has, and the beauty of the instruments works perfectly with the vocals.
@flipmodeisthesquad sorry to disappoint! :-(
@ridespirals Definitely. It keeps the momentum up from beginning to end which I like. So many bands put all their good songs at the beginning of an album and it just fizzles out towards the end. This one tells a story.
Proud to have been around since roughly 8K. Congrats on 30K, dude.
Howz about a TRKRVW of the new Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks track, "Senator"?
Damn Anthony I think if you go back and review this post the '11 hype you'd reconsider and see this album as a strong 8
@ToxicMayo9 yeah, kinda...
@qwertymf5 i think my ears are crooked.
Chris's top three songs from WU LYF
1: Heavy Pop
2: Dirt
3:Cave Song
That puzzle metaphor was deep, man.
Legendary album.
these videos is what im looking forward to most almost every day. that says a lot about these videos... or about my life :P.....
in the end of the day i dont give a shit what anyone else thinks of this album, i think its amazing and thats all that matters, they are my ears after all and i feel privileged to have gone to college with the guitarist, one of the most down to earth and friendly people i have met.
@ExpensiveTibet i'd say all my reviews are pretty biased, to be honest. :-P
1 L Y F
2 We Bros
3 Heavy Pop
" This is one of the very few bands that managed to pull off being emotional, epic, little bit over-the-top and highly dramatic WITHOUT sounding pompous, cliched and/or self-indulgent." Yes.
@TheNiggaNando *hugs*
@Hamandchees3 me, too!
@flaneurgh i'm def gonna try to do this one!
shortly, I'm still completely in love with the sequence of "summas bliss" and especially "we bros" - along with "powa" by tune-yards and "mindkilla" by gang gang dance, these are to me the best songs of 2012, already classics
Come on melon...come on now
My favorite intro yet.
Personally i feel this album is on par with anything Godspeed You! Black Emperor has released if not better, the way Elory conveys emotion through such obscure vocals is incredible and the beats and guitars drowning in reverb help to create that deliberately over egged 'epic' sound. It makes me want to weep and dance at the same time. I hope you give it another chance.
@BibberTheElephant it will be done!
@version191 agreed
@theneedledrop Will Planningtorock's W be on Cal's list?
@Popexify earth was VERY good. pretty, drone-y, and like the soundtrack to the longest duel to every take place in history.
This band is basically my new obsession. With each song I felt like the band was welcoming me with open arms. I just felt an overwhelming feeling of camaraderie or something. The songs get me excited and I love how it's basically a live album and feels so raw.
@Kali23Yuga a tall steaming cup!
I saw Earth recently in Cork. They were more than pretty good I can honestly say. The Black Lips played in the same venue a couple of weeks later and only managed to pull one fifth of the crowd Earth got.
I wasn't digging this band too much until I saw some live videos without all the reverb, and now I could see myself getting into them. I agree about the reverb, I think they would do a lot better without it.
@Rizimar green. :-)
@MrSplatterPlatter i was hoping it was one, too!
Wide of the mark on this one. In 2024 this band is just about on time.
@TheViceFire Again, not satanic. In fact I think their broad mixture of various icons is, like their album/music, representative of the current culture, the current youth, and the rejection of labels. I love the album, and it's clearly a rallying cry of triumph to the current generation, but it's not satanic, just reflective of the current generations' state of mind.
How many songs do u have on ur ipod?????
@ASuperS when it comes out...
Ten years later and wrong. This thing has aged beautifully. We Bros as worst track!? Good intro tho
I just realised... you should review concerts!!!
I downloaded the album yesterday and up to now We Bros is one of my favs :)
But didn't really listened to it with much attention, just back ground music for now!
After listening to a good few reviews by you, notably of my favourite albums, I can tell we just don't get along musically speaking... but... you are funny... so I'll hang around
@dummeponk hahaha. glad to know tnd means so much to you, man! :-D
REVIEW CASTLEMANIA BY THEE OH SEES! i'm sure u'll luv that lp, anthony!
@RadicalBros
Well they will have Act IV, but this is more of a compilation of EPs. Each EP contains 4 songs, and each represents a colour. Like, Black is more heavy, electronic based, White is more mellow etc. In total 9coloursx4songs makes 36 songs in total. So it's a pretty hefty bit of music.
media crap aside, although they did denounce all of their "mystery" in an interview, this album is great. It really took me back to high school. i was surprised that you didnt note any comparison to the band Wilderness. WU LYF basically is Wilderness with WAY better vocals. literally, put on some headphones and walk somewhere and i think youll get it. especially with this fall weather. i wasnt sure about the record at first either but it really grew on me.
See I heard the album months before I actually spent any time looking into the band, so I didn't have the knowledge going in of the mystery and whatnot, so it didn't influence my first few listens of the album.
I also completely agree with your choice of Concrete Gold as the top track. It really doesn't get enough love from the fans I've interacted with.
Otherwise... lots of disagreements with you. To me, it's an almost perfect album. But we're all different. The reverb doesn't bug me because of years of listening to My Morning Jacket, I suppose.
And I found new bands to check out, which always makes me happy. Thanks for the review, even if I almost completely disagree with it.
I don't know anything about indie rock, but I did enjoy this album. I do agree that the bombast gets to be a bit much, but I don't expect bands these days to put out cohesive albums that are meant to be listened to in one sitting. I just put their best tracks into my regular rotation.
"Spitting Blood" paraody in the intro? Haha, nice.
Was disappointed this wasn't a new Wu Tang album
I like the singers voice a lot and the way he speaks over their songs but for the rest of what you said on this review I completely agree.
Having seen these guys in a live setting, their music makes a lot more sense. I'm not sure whether that means the transition from live-show to studio hasn't translated too well or whether you need to hear the emotion of the songs delivered by the band themselves, but I must admit that there is a certain energy with which the band delivers these songs, whether it be live or on record.
1. Spitting Blood
2.LYF
3. 14 Crowns for Me & Your Friends
1. Concrete Gold
2. Spitting Blood
3. 14 Crowns for Me & Your Friends
Arthur Russell - Calling out of Context... I know its old, and legitimately old, but it'd be cool to hear your views on the album.
@GravityWell34 hahaha. same here! :-P
