Great Update! Welcome back! You feel refreshed? 😂 I do like the magnet hooks on back of the cabinet. Thats a nice cabinet period! It would make a great phal space for sure! Have a wonderful weekend.
Hi Stephen, happy new year, great to see you back😊. Love the cabinet, you've got some nice plants in there, it's love to see that Cattleya luedemanniana in bloom
Nice setup! If you're going to use the magnets, I would glue a thin felt or thicker piece of fabric to the magnet side of the hooks to make sure you avoid scratching through the powered coat on the steel. With the high humidity and possible occasional foliar fertilizer spray any nick in the paint will cause that back wall to start rusting fast. How high is the humidity in there? I've found that some of my orchids are really prone to crown rot if they are in a spot that doesn't get enough air movement. You may want to see if you can add a little fan in there, maybe on a timer.
Hmmmm… I hadn’t considered scratching the steel, I might have to find some felt! The humidity is around 50% during the day and around 80% at night. I didn’t seal the setup, so there’s good air flow. So far, no rot issues but I’m definitely keeping an eye on it!
I have my orchids in a Milsbo cabinet from IKEA, they are all really loving it I think because the higher humidity. My species phals, rupiculous laelias and my bulbophyllums are going crazy - including my Phal. gigantea. The only trouble I might have is the resting type dendrobiums maybe not getting cold enough in the winter although I do let it get down to mid 60's at night. I have D. aphyllum and D. friedricksianum just hanging out on top of the cabinet staying cooler and dry. Keeping fingers crossed that works. Maybe I'll figure out a different solution for my dens for next winter. I got a lot of helpful information for what I needed for the cabinet over at the IKEAgreenhouseclub subreddit.
Ohhhh, I didn’t know that sub exists!! I’ll have to check it out!! I bet you can get those Dends to bloom with really dry conditions in-lieu of the cold temps. 🤞
some easy minis to have on mounts on the back wall would be some of the Aerangis (luteoalba, mystacidii, etc), Amesiella (really huge flowers on a small plant), Gastrochilus, Haraella, and the former Sophronitis if you wanted Cattleya. You could probably do some rootless orchids (Chiloschista are one of the easiest) if you wanted to venture there.
I have a rudsta with mini orchids in for over a year...I started off with individual magnets in the back of each mount, but they rust very quickly if you're spraying them with water often. Instead I now have a wire grid hung by magnets and then the individuals orchids hooked onto that. Other thing I'd say is to water proof the bottom of the cabinet thoroughly using silicon sealant. The cabinets are pretty leaky. Maybe not a concern if the cabinet is in your garage and you don't have any power cords underneath....hope that helps!
@@SVKLOrchidsI've replied twice already but it appears youtube doesn't like amazon links! I used a 'PATIKIL' wire grid panel...just a black wire grid essentially. I'm sure you can find similar over in the US.
It’s good to see you and your latest project! I really like the cabinet. I’m wondering about possible rust damage to the back of the cabinet. Does it have a special coating against that? Putting plants on the hooks would allow you to adjust them around other plants of various heights that are sitting on the shelves. I hope you have good news about the greenhouse for us soon!
Thank you! I suspect I'll need to figure out the potential rust problem, which I hadn't considered prior to posting this video. As for the greenhouse, I think I'm going to head to Brazil in September to tour Cattleya nobilior habitat and then set up the greenhouse in 2025. Not for sure, but I really want to head to Brazil!
It's good to see that you are back. I would like to see more miniatures growing up in that cabinet. Usually, they are low maintenance. I was wondering what what the company that you used for sowing your seeds was?
Hey...great to see you!! So glad you're back and I love your cabinet, I found a little box for reptiles and turned it into a miniature orchid growing space this last fall. I used rabbit wire to hang my orchids on but don't care for it I think your magnet set up is great! if the orchids grow and get heavyer how would they do? Think of a possible minnie specimen 😅 ....I tried 1 of my ghost orchid mounts and it's doing great in the cabinet too....I am looking forward to seeing you in video's more often now and have a awesome new year...🎉.
Magnets will start rusting at the end and look bad. I would suggest a plastic mesh wire in black and use plastic hooks on the slabs. Easy to attach true a little hole and inviceble for the eye
Ah, that’s interesting. I hadn’t considered that rust might be a problem! I’ll have to think about that. Drilling some small holes might be a good idea.
I think that the magnets are a great idea and thye give you total flexibility to locate your plant on that back wall. Does the Rudsta come with grow lights or did you buy the grow lights separately?
The cabinet looks great & I bet your orchids will love that environment. What kind of magnets are you using to hold up the lights? I'm wondering bec all the magnets I've ever used hold minimal weight & I'd like to find some strong enough to hold up lights. 😊 Also, thanks for the advice about the Kasa smart plugs you use - I got one working for my greenhouse lights & love it.
These magnets are really strong! The same ones hold up the lights that I showed holding the plant. Here are the exact ones I bought: Neosmuk Black Magnetic Hooks,... www.amazon.com/dp/B085DKDDT1?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Hi Stephen, I am so happy to see this video. I like the idea to use magnets with small plants. I would like to set up a rudsta cabinet like that for my orchids. did you use any specific videos for assembly instructions/ guidance? What lights and other accessories have you used?
Hi Anna - I drew most of my inspiration from this cabinet on Instagram. Hopefully this link will work, so let me know if it doesn't: instagram.com/p/Cfhp69fMYgu/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Stephen, i just received about a dozen Catasetum types from Kallapana tropicals in Hawaii. They all came bare root. All buy one are leaf less. Should i just pot in dry media till they are done with dormancy or should i trim the roots now and pot up in dry media till spring growth is going well? Thanks
I like your baby catasetums but i can not keep them alive. They rot so fast it is hopeless. This year i already trashed six now i have none just big ones.
Love the cabinet so much I had to visit Carnivero as well, but now I am questioning quarantine. Do you quarantine new carnivorous plants from orchids? What cross contamination/infection is there to worry about, if any? I’m very tempted to forgo quarantine, but I might be me falling for this ventricosa.
I like your cabinet and your orchids do too. Nice to have you back. Happy New Year. 👏🥰
Thank you! Good to be back and happy new year to you as well!

Nice to have you bk. Happy New Year. Everything looks great yes
Thank you! 🙏 Good to be back!
Magnet hooks look great. I think they are much more convienient than racks, you can reposition plants easily wherewer you want.
Ya, it also helps that I have a bunch of those magnet hooks already too! 😂
Agreed with multiple single hooks. Lot more adjustability & customization per plant. And you can fit more IMO
@@williamlush9115 I’ll have to keep an eye out for rust, but so far it isn’t a problem!
