    The last stretch of track has gone into service to complete a 2,712km (1,685 miles) railway that loops around China’s largest desert, the Taklamakan. The latest section covering 825km (613 miles) went into operation in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region on June 16, 2022, after three and a half years of construction. It connects Hotan city and Ruoqiang county along the southern edge of the Taklamakan. National railway operator China State Railway Group said the transport link can handle trains running at speeds of up to 120km/h (75mph) and is the first in the world that allows travel in a full circle around a desert. The opening of the Hotan-Ruoqiang segment came as Beijing doubles down its immense project to integrate the western region with the rest of the country, and as a growing number of Western companies try to diversity or decouple from the supply chain in Xinjiang which has been targeted by international sanctions over China’s alleged human rights abuses in the area.

      It's a double edge sword, no? Unifying a country also means they are actively suppressing minority groups.
      It is very much like how Canada tried to assimilate the Natives using various methods. (cough resident "schools" cough) The means by which ccp tries to assimilate China's minority groups aren't so different.
      The other side of the coin is how Europeans celebrate the difference with other Europeans. Germans and Austrians aren't so different but they Now celebrate their differences while still unified under the EU banner.

    There is a reason why no one puts a train track in a desert. The sand alone can cause the train to have an accident. There is no way this won’t be a constant problem.

    • @supremacy2040
      @supremacy2040 Рік тому +2

      @Tranquil Water lol, is that why bridges and buildings in China keep collapsing? Intelligence?
      Every now and then a building collapses or a bridge mainly due to weather, but in China it happens all the time.
      China has this problem of thinking it can always outsmart Mother Nature, like sand storms don’t get higher than the tracks.
      All they want to be is the “first”. Do you think UAE, Saudis and other desert nations haven’t thought about putting trains thru the desert?
      The maintenance cost is huge, erosion from the sand is huge, seriously. It’s the dumbest idea I’ve seen in ages.
      China always does these projects so they can get investment, then show off. Guarantee this project will die, and become a ghost rail to match Chinas ghost cities.

      Whenever ANYONE questions Chinas motives it’s always WE who have no idea. China only cares about money. All these infrastructure projects create gov incentives, what it doesn’t do is create permanent growth.
      Becaue so many of those homes in the ghost cities were bought as 2nd /3 rd homes. Evergrande didn’t go under because China was doing the right thing. Just like the US. So yes we prob understand better than you.
