Well said, brother. No, it didn't bother me. I returned to the Lord in a Calvary Chapel, so I knew the story well. All of it. These truths need to be stressed at these rebukes. On one side the pharisee mindset surfaces to criticize his shortcomings. On the other side, the secular mindset criticizes the movie for not including "all of the dirt," as it were. On it goes... Everybody's got an opinion.
What's not being talked about? The move of God at the time. The thousands of souls coming to Christ. The culture of a nation changing. It wasn't one man or one pastor or one church. It was God. Why can't we recognize when God does something profound, without trying to shift attention to the human beings that He used?

I agree, God used Lonnie despite all his flaws. HE uses flawed people, which we all are! The hypocritical self-righteous (Pharisees) are the ones who are complaining he was in the movie. The movie was great- it reminds me of my walk with Christ and the struggles I've faced and still face. Have seen it twice and going to see it again this weekend as well.

I have heard Greg Laurie speak openly about Lonnie's struggles. I don't believe the movie was necessarily trying to "hide"anything from the audience. Once Lonnie and his wife left, that was a separate story from the one the movie writers were trying to tell. The important takeaway for me is that he came back to faith. Some of the greatest heroes in the Bible were deeply flawed individuals who made terrible choices. If God can forgive someone who repents, then who are we to not forgive them?

I think the movie handled it perfectly. It was not Lonnie's life story, so it didn't need all the dirt. It did show some of his failings. Where they could have mentioned it was at the end credits, but they were gracious and only addressed the reconciliation with Chuck, which was appropriate for the content of the movie.
IMO, anyone who didn't think Lonnie should have been in the movie needs to check their self-righteousness at the door and examine their heart. Future sins don't erase past ministry. We can still celebrate the impact God made through him during that movement.

@Holy Experience The pastor I had growing up fell years later after pastoring another church. I was devastated. But I was grateful for his ministry in my formative years. It opened my eyes to the reality of Romans 3:23. We can easily look up to pastors and Godly leaders, but at the end of the day, they're flawed, sinful people, too. Even King David fell horribly. It reminds us that Jesus is who we follow.

while true, and I didn't actually see the movie so I can't say for certain, but I think the big issue from what I understand is at the end of the movie they did a little textual epilogue about the rest of his life, in which they essentially lied, saying he was still preaching Jesus at the end of his life, but he wasn't actually doing that. iirc he divorced his wife, and (of course allegedly) led a life of homosexuality here and there at multiple points in his life which is likely what he was referring to as backsliding in the 80's. yeah I guess he repented in the end, and before he died he said he thought God was going to restore his health so that he COULD preach again.
so the lie, in addition to the omission which, say what you will about that but it implied a much different life, the lie is also that he wasn't "still" preaching Jesus at the end of his life. rather, he was hoping to be...
the real issue was never Lonnie but with honesty in Christian film. why include that epilogue at all if you can't tell it like it is?

So when I heard about this movie I had to see it and bring my son with me so he could see a small part of my history. I knew a little about Lonnie's life including his death so when the movie portrayed Lonnie beginning to fall, I almost cried. He got off the path God gave him and took his own path with tragic results. As did Samson, King Saul, Adam, and many others. WWJD may have been (or still is) a slogan but it is powerful and we need to take it to heart and ask God for the answer.

Lonnie is so much like a modern David or one of the judges. So much of David’s life was a cautionary tale and God chooses to leave that ugliness in the Bible. And allows David to be part of Jesus’s ancestral line. Lonnie did maybe more sinful things than godly things. But God did use him mightily for a time. God using messed up people, even unbelievers, is a long recurring theme.
Unfortunately the church is so worried about hiding shame and looking perfect, they compound their shame with lies and cover-ups.

I have been a christian for over thirty years now but for the longest time in my early and late twenties I really struggled with sin that kept reoccurring. This really started to compound until it caused me to lose all hope that God was with me, i felt abandoned. Part of the reason for this is because as I failed I started to isolate my true feelings and struggles more and more. It was only through understanding that God designed us to be in fellowship with one another , to confess our sins with trusted brothers, and to boldly approach God in these times instead of shrinking away that I started to come out of that darkness. All this to say I understand what you mean about millennials not wanting to put on a face that everything is "OK" because that only leads to the hiding of sin and isolation, at least in my own life. I wonder if this is something that Lonnie Frisbee needed too was to be open and honest to trusted people that might have been able to struggle with him.

It is made complicated by the fact that the culture is actively assaulting the Christian stance on homosexuality as sinful, and the use of film as propaganda, but in the abstract, it could be done well.

All my friends growing up (once they thought through it) were atheist, agnostic, wiccan, satanist, whatever and talking to them about anything felt like I was fighting an uphill battle. They knew I was Christian and I was trying to prove I was a genuine person worth knowing that wouldn't treat them the way others had while also talking to them about the Bible every chance I got lol even my family would get angry or annoyed with me because of previous experiences with Christians that they just hoisted upon me as they assumed all Christians would be the same. The hurt can run sooo deep it can take so long for anyone to trust you. But it's possible! And totally worth it 😊

It seems the movie was about CC Church taking the focus off of the true "Jesus Movement" as being where, how and upon whom those fires of the Holy Spirit fell and kindeled, and instead placing themselves at the very center...when, at best, they were a result of the "Movement" and not as it sadly appears, that they possibly were even the very ones who derailered it! Yeshua (Jesus) is coming soon brother's and sister's, let us all repent and ask Abba Father to help us love one another now while we can! Look up...for our redemption draws near! ☝Maranatha!

That's true. But Lonnie was practicing the lifestyle even when he was doing all these signs and wonders. Saw his own ex wife tell how he was out in the gay bars until the wee hours OF the morning. He'd read the Bible under the influence of LSD. He never changed his lifestyle. Good Fight Ministries did a good video on Lonnie. Everyone needs to pull it up on you tube and watch it. Very enlightening. The movie just white washed Lonnies life.

Perhaps he did these things, but I did hear him preach, (vid Jesus People 1972) and he did preach repentance from sin and the word of God for Salvation. All of our lives are learning how to put into practice obedience to Christ and letting him form us into a holy people. It took me years to let go after i was a Christian too, (still need work). The movie showed that Lonnie's success was going to his head and he started to try to control things and it messed him up. The guy showed fruits of repentance in later years.

Wounded Soldier- sung by Steve Green
    1) See all the wounded
Hear all their desperate cries for help
Pleading for shelter and for peace
    Our comrades are suffering
Come let us meet them at their need
Don't let a wounded soldier die
    [Chorus]
Come let us pour the oil
Come let us bind their hurt
Let's cover them with a blanket of His love
Come let us break the bread
Come let us give them rest
    Let's minister healing to them
Don't let another wounded soldier die.
    2) Obeying their orders
They fought on the front lines for our King
    Capturing the enemy's stronghold
    Weakened from battle
Satan crept in to steal their lives

Somehow this aspect was watered down by today, so that God is only some "depression clinic" that you heal with and then just do the exact same thing you were doing afterwards.
What's crazy to me is that I believe God may be priming hearts to read those certain hymns again. Like seriously. Take the well-known hymn "It Is Well With My Soul" for instance:
"When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When Sorrows like sea Billows roll,
Whatever my lot thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul."

Thank you for being fair in your comments about Lonnie Frisbee.
Just for the record, here's what I sent another UA-camr who made judgmental remarks.
I've seen the Jesus Revolution movie as well, and I did not see Lonnie Frisbie as sent by satan. He was a man who spoke his mind and did nothing but tell the minister the truth about the rejection of hippies. Churches of all places, if they have God's Power working in them, are doors that need to be open for all people to come in and receive devine help and encouragement with their life transformations into holiness. Lonnie did not force himself on that minister, nor did the minister have to allow Lonnie's crowd in.
Lonnie did go to that church not preaching witchcraft, he went preaching a relationship with God.
Lonnie did get married an divorced at one point. He came from a past of drugs, sex men and women, and he was not the only one among his peers. Lots of men and women (not just hippies) the world over have indulged in one, both, or all of these. The problem is, church people can't separate past and present. Once branded a homosexual, always a homo in their mentality. Lonnie did die from AIDS, after living a life of being fully used by God with His Power to heal and cast out demons. How did he contract AIDS, from a needle or sex an infected man, or woman? All it takes is just one time, and we don't know how he got it, and there's no need to just sling his life of good works aside just because of the way he died. Christian church people are the only ones who kill off their own wounded.
I'm sure God warned Lonnie not to go back to whatever he was backtracking into, just as He talks to us all. I haven't run into any perfect people, neither will you. God could have healed Lonnie but chose not to. Leaving a great example for none of us to think we are bulletproof and the unthinkable can't happen to followers of Christ even if they are working under the manifestation of power in the Holy Ghost, and Lonnie is not the only one who has royally messed up. He just happened to be famous, and in a time where medicines were not as powerful as today.
What I have found, demons of people's past will revisit, especially in times when people are discouraged or low. Will we indulge or walk on? Will there be anyone there who understands and lifts us up, or will they only bring self-righteous judgments and condemnation?
