    1. I am learning Korean because I love South Korean culture and media. The language sounds very "familial"- it feels like a language you would use with your extended family during reunions and holidays. I really like languages with a homey feel.
    2. I will listen to podcasts, write poems, read news articles, read the bible, and change my device language to Korean
    3. I will avoid relying fully on apps like Duolingo and actively use the language daily. I will focus more on vocabulary instead of grammar.
    4. I will schedule study times with my study buddies
    5. I will focus more on output. I will talk to myself in Korean, write in Korean, and other things to immerse myself in the language.

    1) I'm learning Spanish not only because it's taught in school but because I'm interested in it for travel and other things
    2) Strategies - reading the Bible in Spanish, listening to podcasts (I'm following a few right now), watching UA-camrs in Spanish
    3) Traps to avoid - only focusing on grammar (especially with classes in school)
    4) Maintaining streaks & getting my friend to keep me accountable
    5) I think in the next 7 days I can make it a goal to have a conversation in Spanish or journal in Spanish once a day!

@@blossomgal I learned English, French and Spanish in school, so it was kinda "forced" which is good tho, cause self studying is sooo exhausting haha and I think I wouldn't even have discovered my passion for languages. So anyways, what helped me to actually be good at it was my motivation. Motivation is in general a huge thing when it comes to learning a language. When it comes to self studying like korean and Swedish I mostly use books. I tried different ones from Talk to me in Korean or from Pons. I recently bought a new book for studying and its soo good, its called "korean grammar in use" (if you're interested in learning korean idk haha). Now I am doing a language course in Korea which is helping me a lot. In general I try to use all the languages in my daily life like listening to music, watching Movies or UA-cam Videos. And for me the best thing to learn and practice is actually self talking. I do it everyday. I just talk to myself and imagine different situations. Its actually helping a lot to improve my speaking and conversation skills. And its helpful especially if you dont have friends or someone you can practice speaking with.

    1) I am learning Indonesian because I want to participate in an exchange program my university offers
    2) To keep it fun and engaging, for input I will be relying on YT, music & podcasts and write down vocabulary that coincides with the topics I'm interested in. For output I will write small journal entries, record audios and talk to myself in Indonesian
    3) I will avoid being harsh to myself when I don't meet a goal I've set for myself and I will avoid being too strict with my schedule and rather keep it fun and flexible (to not drop it completely)
    4) I will keep myself accountable by setting reminders in my phone and having an accountability buddy who is also learning a language (albeit a different one)
    5) I will look up Indonesian creators I can follow, so I naturally keep in contact with the language

I loved this video. My target language for this year is English, my native language is Spanish and Turkish is my second language but sometimes it’s really difficult for me as a medical student to find time to study languages but this year I want to overcome this mindset and achieve my language goals.
Some of the problems that languages learners face are not using the things their learn because no one talk the language in their environment. Sometimes when I learn something new in my target language I want to talk about it and share it with someone but cannot because no one knows English in my city. I don’t have any feedback and that makes that the learning process becomes more difficult and slower.

I am in physical therapy school right now so I understand. I tell myself to at least "appease the bird" (do one lesson in Duolingo) and I can build up from there if i have time. Many people in my class are interested in learning Spanish so we made a club; we haven't been meeting lately but we will still post things we find helpful.
For my Japanese, I am on the fence about studying for the JLPT, especially since the window to take the test is so small. I end up listening to podcasts more (including medical ones I have found.) They just put out a book for healthcare professionals so I have a dictionary, so to speak.
With both my languages, if I make it applicable to my future job, the less it feels like I am taking away from my studies. The dialogs for medical settings are limited here but they are relevant. Just make sure any listening activities are less than twenty minutes, better if under ten. Any longer and you can burn out and putting them on repeat is difficult.

1| I am learning German! I found a lot of great German songs that I wanted to sing along to, so that’s why I wanted to learn German at first. However, now I’m quite interested in the language and I want to travel to Germany one day!
2| I’m going to go back over the basics and make sure I am pronouncing the sentences correctly. And I have this German book that organizes a 30 day plan, so I’m going to follow that and review.
3| With learning German, the main trap is people discouraging me from learning the language. They say it’s aggressive and harsh when in actuality it’s not, unless the person is angry , then yea it’ll sound harsh. Just like in any other language.
4 | My German friend is helping me learn German. So she’s a big help, she helps motivate me to want to learn more. She’s teaching me German and I’m teaching her English. One day I want to talk to her in German.
5 | I will actually stick with the 30 day German plan, learn words on index cards that have to do with the planner, my friend quizzes me on articles for words, and I get on Duolingo for a little review. Now for pronunciation, I record myself saying a sentence in German and I send it to my friend.. as embarrassing as it can be.. I’m less embarrassed about it. Plus, I am getting a lot better! Progress is awesome! Haha thanks for reading. :)

Plus, I want to speak German with my German friend, and travel to Germany one day! I wasn’t that interested in Spanish that much. Also, because I had trouble pronouncing the words. I honestly learn languages because I like how they sound but I'm practicing my Spanish with Spanish worship songs and sermons, and I only want to learn lingala (congolese language) because I wanna understand their worship songs and the jokes my church friends make in that language lol😂😁

    1) I’m learning Korean and French. Korean because I am korean and it would make it a lot easier to communicate with family. French because I’d like to see France and experience that culture.
    2) I will probably listen to podcasts and watch UA-cam videos. Practice speaking korean with my family more. Hopefully I’ll be able to read books in French and Korean.
    3) Avoid going all in and burning myself out quickly. I think practicing everyday and slowly increasing the amount of time I spend will help me avoid burnout.
    4) I will write out my goals where I can visually see it everyday
    5) I will start using a little bit of duolingo and find study materials that will help me to start conversations

Amazing video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

    1) I'm learning english and korean because english is a really useful language and it's the international language so you need to know it and korean because I really like K-pop and I would like to travel to korea and understand what they are saying without the subtitles.
    2) I study english at school and by watching a lot of videos on youtube and I study korean with apps like Duolingo or Teuida and by watching series.
    3) I don't want to focus to much on the languages and be obsesed by them beacause I could be bored and never try to learn them any more, I also don't want to only focus on grammar and vcalubary but also on prononsation.
    4) I will try to studyy a litle every day and put a reminder on my phone

Im learning Spanish and Korean. Spanish because my elder brother introduced me to language learning with it and i got hooked (more like I'm intrigued, I want to see myself become fluent). Korean because I'm into Kdramas and the Korean language is cozy. Like it feels like im being encourages whenever i hear it. I simply love the language.
    2. Up till now my only strategy was just keeping a streak on learning app but now im going to venture into reading books and learning vocab from them, then shadowing daily.
    3. Ill avoid the trap of being stiff necked eith a strategy even when its not working. Like trying to do what other people are doing even when it doesn't suit me.
    4. Ill make practice videos every month to keep myself accountable ( yhats the only system i can think of right now)
    5. I'd follow a shadowing account right now

I'm learning French because I enjoy it and would love to be able to communicate around Europe & in Africa! I'm also getting started in Korean because I find the culture super interesting and want to live / study there someday :)
    -strategies
I'm learning French in school right now & using apps to review, speaking as much as possible! I have a friend who I can speak French with as well and it's a blessing! As for Korean, I'm using a workbook, several online resources, podcasts to learn vocab + pronunciation.
    -pitfalls I'll avoid
I'll avoid setting goals that are just way too big and unmanageable. One step at a time!
    -accountability
I have a specific goal for 2023, and every month I'm breaking it down & expanding! writing this in a journal really helps :)
Thanks Annie for posting this, I've been so passionate about learning languages + cultures lately!! perfect timing :)

    1. i'm learning korean because it feels like a comfort language, and i'm a huge kpop and kdrama fan, and if i ever go to a concert or smt, there ain't gonna be subtitles telling me what's happening. (i also rlly wanna visit south korea.)
    2. i'm gonna start with busuu and coursera (maybe). i'm also going to try to listen to more korean content, and when i watch kpop content/kdramas, i'll listen more than i read the subtitles.
    3. i won't spend too long over things that seem pointless irl (ex. grammar conjugations no one actually uses).
    4. i'll get my friends to keep me accountable and hold a record of what days i study it and what days i don't.
    5. i will start lessons on busuu and focus on picking up vocabulary when watching kpop content/kdramas, and i will write them down for future reference.

Sounds like you’re doing great! I agree that it’s good to learn the languages that you are more likely to be able to use in real life. That’s mainly what I’m sticking with these days.
Recently I’ve mostly been usinq apps, videos, dialogues, and newspaper reading to improve my languages. In the past I had lots of lessons with teachers (online and off), but I don’t really have the energy for that these days.
I’ve doing mostly maintenance of Mandarin and Cantonese (which I also have to use very day in real life) as well as more active study of Vietnamese and Spanish.

gonna start learning french this summer after my exams, im mainly learning it to comunicate easier with family, and friends (most of my friends speak it)plus i feel the need to learn this incases of abroad travelling.
Currently my plan is to use more video/voice based tutorials and listening since ive found it an easier thing to start with then break my way into speaking and reading.
i would say i avoid limiting my french lessons to just online resources but rather adapting my day to day things in french to get more comfortable with it.
to keep myself accountable im just gonna tell my friends im learning french lmao, once i tell them they wont dare let try quitting especially since they speak it so often they'll just altogether start talking to me in french.

    2) I have started out with Duolingo but I will start reading texts and articles in danish ( I'm swedish so I have an advantage here since the languages have similarities ), watch some series and movies, try to find someone who speaks danish, listen to podcasts and try to find youtubers that speak mainly danish.
    3) Losing interest in the process and focusing to much on grammar
    4) If I find a danish friend, I will try to get them to keep me accountable and I have scheduled time in my day for language learning
    5) I will serch up the most popular and used dansih words and try to learn the spelling and pronounciations.

The rest of the world learns English as a second language, at least most non-English countries in the western world, so most people worldwide are actually bilingual at the very least. I cannot imagine just knowing one language actually! And I don’t mean to brag, I just genuinely can’t imagine that. Besides the northern languages (native level Swedish and Norweigan) and English fluently, I am now almost intermediate in Spanish and upper-beginner in Portuguese. I also know some German since I had that as a foreign language in high school, but that definitely starts to fade. Your video reminded me, and also inspired me to practice my Spanish again! I tried Japanese and Hindi (Hindi mostly due to my heritage, same with Portuguese) but I think they can wait, it was so hard! But Spanish feels more like a smaller jump to get into the habit because I’m already familiar with it…. Anyway, thanks for letting me rant a little bit. Good video, I appreciated it! ❤

Korean because I want to study abroad in Korea (or at the very least visit) and I want to have a knowledge of the language beforehand so I can really appreciate the culture and the finer points of the language itself

    1. Arabic because many of my friends are Arab and speak Arabic, plus my uncle and grandma both speak Arabic and I would love to be able to talk to my family and friends parents without a big language barrier; Yoruba because it’s my native language and many of my extended relative speak it as their only language and though I fully understand my first speaking language was English and so I can barely speak it; Spanish because I recently went on a trip to Mexico with my family and could not really enjoy outside of the hotel vicinity because we couldn’t understand or speak Spanish so I made a promise to my parents that I would learn Spanish before our next trip back
    2. Listening to podcast, music, watching UA-cam or shows in the target language and speaking to the native speakers around me
    3. Arabic - not picking a dialect and learning it but also not learning some vocabulary in other dialects
Yoruba - not asking for corrections and not learning how to write or read the language
Spanish - only learning grammar skills but not learning how to implement them immediately in conversational speech
    4. By communicating (either speaking, texting or sending voice messages) to native speakers but also learning with a friend
    5. I will create a plan or schedule for the next few weeks to keep myself accountable and organized, get a notebook or writing system, implement my immersion systems and try to talk and read out loud in the target languages

I'm currently learning Spanish and French. I'm trying to learn both of those languages because 1)I live in a population where the two primary languages are Spanish and English. I'm not Hispanic but I grew up around family that spoke Spanish fluently as a way to communicate with others and exercise their brains. I'm honestly upset with myself that I lost the ability to speak as much Spanish as I used to, so I'm making up for lost time. 2) I decided to learn French because I do plan on traveling when I'm a bit older and I do want to visit France. I'd also like to raise the point on how learning languages benefits us across all areas of our lives and into other areas of learning. Using memory is really important and using the muscle throughout life to keep it top shape helps with so many things! Especially for me as a single mum. I'll be starting Spanish next week as I have a new teaching contract in middle school and have to support their Spanish classes. My first foreign language was Japanese in primary and loved it. I then moved onto Bahasa Indonesia and loved that and finally at uni I learned Mandarin as my major and Vietnamese on the side. I think with my new job and the income and stability it brings I'll be able to go back to my past languages and learn those. I live in a high tourist area in QLD and so if I go out looking there will be speakers there that I can practice with. However, back to my first point. Learning languages and the process of learning languages has improved my memory in times of high stress, I'm much more organized and on task than others who haven't learned a language, I am flexible with my English and can understand and converse with those who don't speak English as their first language, I have tuned my ears to not only the violin and music but also other sounds in languages so I am much more accurate with my tones, and I have found I need to practice memorizing as it makes life so much easier when I have things committed to memory! My son has also benefited from learning Mandarin and Arabic, he has an excellent memory, can apply his learning at school and loves to learn new things. He also engages with content in class more so than others. Therefore he is reaping the benefits that language learning processes taught us. You don't have to be advance in a foreign language to gain the benefits of learning that language. So enjoy the process.

2.) I turned my phone settings to Spanish and the location to Mexico, I read quotes in Spanish on Pinterest and do my best to translate, and I will push myself more to speak to mi familia en espanol.
3.) Getting scared of sounding dumb.
4.) Remembering the fact that I'm never going to complete my goal if I keep getting scared.
5.) Mainly just begin to speak it out loud.

One of my biggest hurdles is fear of mistakes as well. What helped me start speaking more is knowing it will be obvious when I speak I will not sound like a native. Natives of any language are usually flattered you are learning their language for whatever reason and are more likely to help you correct your mistakes in a gentle way.
I know in the US, it seems like people would be harsh for speaking incorrectly. This comes from people who only know one language (English) and will never have an interest in learning another one. Place yourself with people who respect your goals and those who are happy to see you so they can speak their native language.

    1. I am learning Turkish and Spanish because I travel to counties that speak those lanuages quite often, so it would be great to be able to communicate with native speakers.
    2. Journal in another language, and make some vlogs about how my day was, what I have done etc.
3.I have been using duolingo for a few months for Turkish, and it does feel pretty repetitive, so I will move on from that app
    4. remind myself of the amazing culture, and how immersive the next travelling experience could be if I knew the language well.
    5. read some articles on topics that I find interesting, and use some new phrases to make my own. I have some online friends who would be willing to help me learn and understand my mistakes.

    1. I am learning French to improve my French grade in school, Mandarin to have fluent conversations with my family with no issues, Spanish to have more conversations with my best friend (its her first language)
    2. I will listen to music, watch kids shows with English subtitles (at first) and switch them to the target language subtitles, listen to podcasts.
    3. I will avoid forgetting to study it or giving myself not enough time to study
    4. Google calendar
    5. Start rewatching Extra in French (as it is going to be my priority for however long), do my best to translate everything I can say in English to Mandarin, and find a Spanish kids show to dip my toe into actually learning the language

    1. I'm learning Spanish, ASL, and Russian. Spanish because it's a really important skill to have where I live, and my mom knows some of it, so the language feels really familial to me. I'm learning ASL and Russian just because I find them really cool. I listen to a lot of Russian music, and have been interested in ASL since I was 10.
    2. For Spanish, I'm going to talk to my mom and just practice saying things, because I have an okay vocabulary already. For ASL, there's this really good college level teacher that I can watch on youtube that I really like. For Russian, I am really starting out with the basics, so I'm using Duolingo and Babble, as well as some books from the library.
    3. I feel like there's always a "time" to learn languages, and because I struggle with executive functioning, that "time" often slips by me. I need to just practice, on good days that can mean sitting down and learning vocabulary, and on low effort days that could mean just watching a show in a target language.
    4. This is the part that I'm unsure about, it's really hard to keep myself accountable. This next month I basically have empty, so I think I'm going to start taking online or in-person language classes.
    5. I'm going to look into some classes near where I live (I prefer in-person learning), and if I can't find any, I'll look for online classes that fit my schedule.

    1) I am learning Russian and German. I feel like Russia is massive and Russian and German would be quite useful to know in Europe in general, to where I'd be able to get by easily throughout Europe and Slavic countries.
    2) I am currently using 2-3 apps I've found, that in my opinion, I am retaining the information most. I would like to find better ways to immerse myself in the languages like UA-cam videos and perhaps talking with native speakers in my target languages.
    3) The traps I will avoid are getting caught up in "streaks" on apps and learning at my own pace.
    4) I will keep myself accountable by scheduling a time out of each day to study and having a binder with my study materials in.
    5) Within the next week I want to focus on starting a more structured learning routine. Rather than randomly opening a language app throughout the day.
If anyone has any tips or recommendations, I would love any feedback! Thank you Annie for this amazing video.

German because it was the first foreign language I learned at school and I liked it. I decided to start studying it again 20 years after leaving school, and it all came back very quickly.
Japanese because I’m a Ju-jitsu instructor and we use a lot of Japanese words in our lessons. I wanted to know more about the language and culture, not just a few isolated words.

1.) I am learning Spanish bc my dad immigrated from Venezuela when he was 5 and his parents have a very strong accent and are hard to understand and I would love to be able to speak their native language and understand the culture more
2.) I am starting from zero so I plan on starting with duolingo and watching some shows I am familiar with but in Spanish (gilmore girls, greys anatomy, so on)
3.) I am going to avoid the trap of keeping myself in a little box and I will apply myself in real world situations
4.) I will stay accountable by building in a certain time everyday to learn the language and learn with my friends to keep each other accountable
5.) I will start my duolingo lessons and maybe watch a familiar show in Spanish in the next 7 days
    Thanks annie!! ❤❤

    Currently learning Spanish,
I mainly use mass input, a little bit of direct study via apps, books, audiobooks / podcasts, and videos / movies, and then speech practice of “shadowing” native language recordings,
My main trap is the “Quitters Day Effect” where I lose steam from burning at my goal to fast (referring to new years quitters day) and my adhd says “yea no motivation for you. So I take 2-3 days off and get back on the ‘tren’, only other trap I have is Dyslexia…
I only stay accountable so I can talk to my friend with more progress and efficiency, she is a native Spanish speaker and speaks english too but she said she could help me learn Spanish.

    2) i will read and write in both languages and speak with friends i have that are fluent. i will attempt to find a show to watch or a podcast to listen to
    3) i will try not to be too obsessed over grammar rules because i do that a lot
    4) i will make sure to read and write everyday in my target languages and i will try to speak my target languages everyday
    5) i’m thinking about getting some fairytale books in either german or danish so that i still vaguely know the plot line and i can figure out words from context clues.

    1) I am learning French in a very lazy, but consistent way. Every day I watch at least 1 hour videos is French and translate the infamiliar words from the subtitles. That lazy manner gave me a lot of understanding and encourages to make some next steps. I am reading a book of Agatha Christy. I am doing it rather intensively, that's why it isn't quickly.
I have a mixed feeling with French, because I understand documentaries more, than just casual youtubers. The French from the documentaries has a lot of common vocabulary with English, casual French doesn't.
Now I am in the point, when I am starting to write my diary and thrying start speaking to myself.
I want to use the opportunity in my university and take Spanish A2. I don't have a special passion to that language, but made an A1 course a year ago and I want to build a good base for learning this language. On the other hand I am just beginning to be comfortable with French. It can make my progress slower.
In my heart I want to learn Mandarin. The characters are super interesting, the way the language sounds is new and the culture is something totally different, that everything, what I have experienced before. BUT it seams impossible to memorise. I want to learn the languages to the comfortable levels the way I learned English and German. I want to read literature in my foreign language and have pleasure and I don't want to throw up the languages which I have started, i.e. French and Spanish. Maybe after graduation I would have guts to start Chinese.
    2) Strategies. To use the language. I love to listen to podcasts and dialogues in my targetlanguages over and over again, when I am walking.
I am listening to the language in the bus, when I am waiting in the supermarket.
    Be consistent.
When you are learning French by yourself, start with Apps like Easy Fun Learn, Duolingo, Mondly etc, where you can clearly hear the pronunciation. I startet learning French through listening, because in order to start reading you need to know the pronunciation. Even if you don't read out loud, you pronounce it false in your head and you teach yourself false French.
    3) Do everything your way. Experiment. Don't learn too many languages at the same time. I know, the languages are fascinating and we would never learn them fully, but at least learn them to the level, when you can use them. And use them daily or weekly.
    4) Your new language is your baby. It requires a lot of attention and love at the beginning. Your new language is your new personality, new identity. I like to think about that this way.
Although I cannot speak French yet (I am learning by myself and don't want to learn it wrong) I have already some feeling of this language. I am trying to thing on the paper and write, what I think about certain topics, then check a lot of thar with Google and then to speak about it. I suppose, that speaking comes after writing.
