A lot of people are mad that they are smashing square bodys but you gotta think most of these trucks dont have titles and the bodys were already rough so they aren't worth parting out. Not all of them but I'd say quite a few of them.
They dont know shit stacy David actually does but when they go to commercial the real builders take over David fryburger and lucky Costa called these shows out on it
Having driven a 76 dodge D200 in the local demo derby for 3 years. This is addictive. nothing like smashing and banging. Trucks Hit a hell of a lot harder than cars do.
wow! here i thought they were always junk trucks, but they got more money in aftermarket parts than my house is worth, and those truck bodys are in better shape than mine.
Check out Gropp engineering and see how many thousands of dollars you can spend on a top of the line derby engine. It may be Gropp automotive or something like that.
Thanks for the derby video guys. I love derbys there is just as much ingenuity that goes into derby cars as race cars. Where I live if you don't have 10k invested into your figure 8 car you won't even begin to be competitive. Its big here.
As a former derby builder and driver I scratched my head at why did you weld that truck up before doing the interior (seat, seat belts/harness, steering column, wiring, battery box, trans cooler etc) Makes no sense to weld the doors shut before doing those first. Now you all get to climb in and out of that cab to do those tasks. Even more so, good luck getting the stock bench seat back in (which is recommended to use over a single bucket seat.) The bench seat can be use like a "catchers mitt" when making a reverse hit. Just before impact lay down a bit so the seat takes the impact, not the body from sitting up. Also, do not cut away any of the steel from the truck. That hood, if it were cut in the right way, that steel could be wrapped back over the top of the hood and welded down (makes the hood stronger and who cares how it looks.) Outside of those, the build is looking good.
I'm surprised I didn't see more Fords. Last time I was at the junkyard they had three Chevy pickups and about 20 Fords. There was a lot of dodges but nothing earlier than 1994.
Would liked to of seen them finish the build I think they should revisit the subject with either another truck or a car or some sort because this is one of the few times a show has done something like this and not turned it into a joke
As a body guy from salty ass Syracuse NY, this shit kinda hurts to see all of these straight and solid tailgates, beds, fenders go to such a waste this way
4:07 "It's amazing that these trucks even still move." *Really?* Note for this I live in Wisconsin smack dab in the middle of the rust belt I was at my local sawp meet in September and they had a truck derby. Saw a Chevy square body probably in less condition than any of those trucks and it lasted all the way to the rear wheels shredded down to the hub, rear axle dragging on the ground, and frame completely snapped in half. Only reason he got third was because his axle sat higher than the rims (what was left of them) and he couldn't move. Now that's a truck that is amazing it still moved let alone ran.
What a waste of a solid square body. Where I live in the rust belt a solid truck like that brings good money. I guess one man's definition of junk is different from another man's.
Ah yes derbies before slider shafts, high dollar drivetrains, custom rims, engine and trans cradles. Back when it was fun and didn't take a year to build one car
Sliders have been around for 20 years. Doesn’t take a year either, unless it’s a blizzard bash car. Even then, if you already have the shit, it’s literally just swapping the shit over.
It's not as bad as you would think. Like a football player doesn't get hurt badly because he has a helmet and pads and is expecting to be hit hard. In the derby cars you have a helmet and padding on the driver's door and know you're going to get hit by 5,000 pound vehicles. But with that said I have had whiplash over a dozen times, broken nose, both hips pulled out of their sockets, stitches by the mile, and wake up in pain every day but would do it all over again 👍🏁
You should come up to north Idaho, there's a few old square bodies and 60's dodge truck behind damn near every barn. We rent a house that's on a farm, landlord lives on the other side of the barns. Just here there's a '74 k20, a '72 c60, two late 40's/early 50's dodge flatbeds, and two or three 60's Dodge trucks.

But im thinking not and they pulled the engine and trans back out as soon as the camra was off because most derby cars cost between 500 to 1000 dollars

To think, if you ran that truck around here it would be extremely under built. Also, round here people are using less square body trucks in favor of newer super duty fords and 3rd gen dodges. Maybe that's because most of the square bodies were used up, or full box frames are better, or both.
