I never save full outfits or aesthetics, but I always save little details like -- oh, I like that shirt, oh, I like that dress, I like ironic embroidery, funky buttons, distressed denim, etc. So, little details here and there or even just vague images that point to the overall mood I like. It really helps! I think Pinterest also learned that I like random shit so it shows me less insta ootd-s and more fashion photography / runway details / small brands / customised clothing. I love this website so much T_T
yes!!! i do the same !! i’ve started to save images of individual pieces rather than pics of ppl wearing clothes/fit checks and it’s helped me a lot. i go thru my fashion board and pick a new individual piece to style my outfit around (or try to recreate if i don’t have something similar!) and it has forced me to remove myself from influencer fashion and delve deeper into what makes me like/dislike a piece! :-) also super helpful to make a board of pieces u already own styled by others (like if i see a pic of someone wearing a sweater i own and i like how they styled it). pinterest is amazing as long as u work around their algorithm as best u can haha
Also reproducing vintage is extremely common in the industry, even high fashion luxury brands will source inspo pieces from vintage stores that they can reference in their future designs. Fashion trends always come back around and Unif isn’t the only one doing it.
honestly thank you for saying you’d rather hang around “unfashionable” people with an open mind than fashion snobs with a superiority complex. i love fashion but don’t have much money or energy to dedicate to curating my own style (ex. thrifting, upcycling, online shopping) since i’m disabled and am usually just focused on working to make rent. i genuinely cannot stand the uppity condescending attitude that a lot of fashion people have if they perceive you as unfashionable without considering other people’s extenuating circumstances (it’s usually the most privileged people who do this as well like white, upper class, thin, able bodied people)

i agree with all your opinions in this video,, and that person who commented about being disappointed pissed me off too I get that we are all entitled to our opinions, but you don’t have to talk down on what makes other people happy you were really excited about the pieces you picked and how you wanna style them and that’s all that matters

My inspo board on Pinterest is full of textures like moss, 80s cartoons, and weird globby sculptures, I think it comes down to how tools are used. If people use Pinterest at a surface level and feel unsatisfied with the results they probably would benefit mixing in other tools to find their style as well.
i had the same thought process with your last point. ive had friends and classmates who always carried this attitude of feeling superior or not really communicating with me and other classnates because they wanted to almost gatekeep their "knowledge" on fashion and the skills that come with it. There is literally nothing more uninspiring than someone that does that because it takes away everything they started for. The creativity and the overall individuality gets taken away by the overbearing attitude they hold and it definitely took me by surprise because i had such a different outlook on it before I started getting into fashion and design, thank you for making me feel like I wasn't weird for having that opinion lmaooo

But yeah, Pinterest can be helpful to those that don’t have any sense of fashion & style…but it harms you after a certain point. If everyone’s looking at the same thing, it basically becomes stale. It doesn’t push you to develop your style beyond superficial “aesthetics.”
I get what you mean with Pinterest and Tik Tok, especially Tik Tok, however I must say I live in a small town in Michigan so whatever I find on Pinterest no one else is really wearing here, ya know? So if it inspires me and I’m wearing something someone else in New York or LA is wearing a lot, because they’ve all seen it, it really doesn’t matter. I have no inspiration to look towards in my town. Lol so Pinterest is sometimes beneficial, especially because I have a hard time finding Instagram accounts I like
I will say I’m not one to copy entire outfits though, I just use it for ideas. I thrift a lot of my wardrobe so it helps me come up with basic pieces to find. And prevents me from buying stuff I don’t know how to style. I’ve been finding pins with unique colored tights, but I don’t want the exact tights or necessarily want to style them the exact way. Any way, I’ve been binging your channel and love your videos. Just thought I’d add my little perspective :-)

I agree that Pinterest/TikTok can be detrimental to style, but I wouldn’t say that it has to be. Sure most people will end up with a similar outfit from the same inspo, but when people attach to sensibilities and resonating aspects of an image instead of taking it literally, two individuals could create entirely different looks derived from the same source.
Pinterest and tiktok are good places for inspiration but in the case of tiktok specifically you’re very right about how it can quickly overstimulate viewers. I think it’s important to know what personal values influence your style and to have an image of yourself you go off of when picking out items almost like an avatar. Like asking “would this really work with my wardrobe?”. It’s great to get into new things but it’s also really important to separate appreciation for items from feeling like you have to adopt the aesthetic. Like I’m a stem major w an affinity for technical and unique clothing so I’m not gonna be buying bapestas and robin jeans, instead I stick to more utilitarian/functional brands. my feeds may be filled w brands yohji or hba but I appreciate they look good in their own regard without adopting a full avant- or streetwear aesthetic.

I recommend finding inspiration in things that are unusual... Such as being a computer science major looking at fashion videos for inspiration on structure. When it comes to the UNIF topic I see both sides…. I don’t think it so much as morals ( like copying older vintage designs) but taking the fun out of the adventure of finding this cool unique vintage piece. In a way I feel like vintage has lost its spark. I mean if everyone has the same top your wearing, who cares if it’s vintage its no longer unique or special… if that makes sense. These things are so easily attainable now, there’s no fun in it anymore, no individuality in it. I think sometimes it’s okay to not be able to get certain things you want too. This vintage dress might be too expensive, or these shoes are just super rare, like yes it sucks that you can’t get it but at least your not over consuming. Like I said I feel like things are so easily attainable, it’s results in overconsumption. I can go on and on about this… but all I’m trying to say is I wouldn’t be mad If UNIF didn’t exist.
i only use pinterest now to see archives of my favorite brands or magazines like fruits. i used to pin every cool statement graphic or unique vintage piece i saw on my board without even considering if it resonated with my style of worked in my wardrobe. then i would scour depop to find specific pieces and waste a lot of money T_T
The Pinterest comment depends heavily on the person imo, yes it shows a large variety of stuff but eventually you start to learn what you like the most out of everything being shown to you. It takes time for the app to curate your feed into what you real style is rather than one big blob of things. I’m very consistent with the app and now I’ve found my personal style that I’ve stuck to for years and I love using Pinterest to keep finding stuff that pertains to my style.
I agree with most of what you've said. While I don't think the Unif thing is as bad as Shein like you explained, I still think its a pretty lame move on Unif's part for not giving credit. Yeah those vintage brands may no longer exist but Unif is techncially still stealing the design. The whole models having to pay to work thing i totally relate too. I do performance arts with hula hoops, and while you may be given free admission to the event you are performing at, most of the time youou arent paid, and still have to pay for everything else (travel, hotel, food, costuming, etc.). Agreeeeeeee! Coming from the tumblr age I feel like at that time u rly had to rummage to find the things u loved and building ur style was much more of a *slower* process. Wow it's more like it gets thrown at you constantly, not to mention ads, social pressure...etc. My ethos is just to wear what makes u feel good, comfortable, confident. Also hard agree w the Heaven point. It was cool at the start... but like, the people who are involved w making Heaven cool (the artists, independent designers, etc) wouldn't wear it. The quality is definitely nothing to shout about considering the price too. I think it's good for some people who aren't into the subcultures it's influenced by who may not know where to find similar (more authentic) clothing of this style. I agree with you that the “high fashion” world is inherently exclusionary and pretentious. I also think that a certain level of exclusionary attitudes in fashion leads to a lack of inspiration and creativity. HOWEVER, when someone takes years and years to develop a craft, skill set, and knowledge base beyond that of others that pursue fashion as a hobby, I do think it should be rewarded. I do acknowledge that there is a difference between pretending to be better than/ know more than others and actually taking the time to devote yourself to fashion history/ textile production. If people market themselves as knowing more than others in the fashion community it may be because the fashion industry is so crowded that they are tired of having to prove their worth with every interaction or new client, etc. The same is true in academia and medicine. As someone in the medical/academia field- it is also incredibly exclusionary, and I don’t think the fashion industry is any more outwardly pretentious than the medical industry/ academia- they’re just pretentious in different ways lol.
I couldn't agree more with the UNIF one, literally don't give a sh!t if they "copy" vintage/deadstock designs simply because they are not copy/pasting but reinventing with their own touch. UNIF is the closest you can get to real authentic 90's... NEW. I also want to put this out for discussion: Your take on the modeling industry is almost contradictory to your take on the fashion industry being pretentious. It might just be the way I perceived your modeling argument, but it seemed as though you were putting down modeling as a job in saying that it can’t be fulfilling in the long-term. You started to acknowledge that modeling goes beyond someone’s appearance, but it seems like you don’t really believe that modeling really can be an art. It seems almost like an attack on models themselves in that they are inherently insecure and trying to prove their worth through their beauty which is an insulting generalization. You went on to say later that you aren’t basing your entire worth or finding joy in the medical industry, so then why wouldn’t that be the same with people in the modeling industry? I’m sure plenty of models aren’t content with the industry, but find joy in the work they do- that they could represent their community or thwart traditional beauty standards, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I think the modeling industry and fashion industry both need a complete restructuring to become more inclusionary. Though, I think the way you worded your points made it seem like you were putting down models and people in the fashion industry for not being “smart enough” to pursue another field of study- that it’s much more fulfilling to pursue medicine which is condescending and contradictory to your point of fashion being pretentious. There is value in both modeling and fashion. They are both an art through which to communicate the human experience, and I think both can be aspirational and fulfilling jobs.

My personal probably very unpopular opinion is that i think the hyped diesel skirt and logo that the fashion girlies seem to be obsessed w recently is fugly asf 😭 its just not my aesthetic and huge logos on clothing is just not my thing but ive never heard or seen anyone say anything bad about it but thats mine lmao
When it comes to the UNIF topic I see both sides…. I don’t think it so much as morals ( like copying older vintage designs) but taking the fun out of the adventure of finding this cool unique vintage piece. In a way I feel like vintage has lost its spark. I mean if everyone has the same top your wearing, who cares if it’s vintage its no longer unique or special… if that makes sense. These things are so easily attainable now, there’s no fun in it anymore, no individuality in it. I think sometimes it’s okay to not be able to get certain things you want too. This vintage dress might be too expensive, or these shoes are just super rare, like yes it sucks that you can’t get it but at least your not over consuming. Like I said I feel like things are so easily attainable, it’s results in overconsumption. I can go on and on about this… but all I’m trying to say is I wouldn’t be mad If UNIF didn’t exist.

i only use pinterest now to see archives of my favorite brands or magazines like fruits. i used to pin every cool statement graphic or unique vintage piece i saw on my board without even considering if it resonated with my style of worked in my wardrobe. then i would scour depop to find specific pieces and waste a lot of money T_T

The Pinterest comment depends heavily on the person imo, yes it shows a large variety of stuff but eventually you start to learn what you like the most out of everything being shown to you. It takes time for the app to curate your feed into what you real style is rather than one big blob of things. I’m very consistent with the app and now I’ve found my personal style that I’ve stuck to for years and I love using Pinterest to keep finding stuff that pertains to my style.

I agree with most of what you've said. While I don't think the Unif thing is as bad as Shein like you explained, I still think its a pretty lame move on Unif's part for not giving credit. Yeah those vintage brands may no longer exist but Unif is techncially still stealing the design. The whole models having to pay to work thing i totally relate too. I do performance arts with hula hoops, and while you may be given free admission to the event you are performing at, most of the time youou arent paid, and still have to pay for everything else (travel, hotel, food, costuming, etc.). TO WORK.

Agreeeeeeee! Coming from the tumblr age I feel like at that time u rly had to rummage to find the things u loved and building ur style was much more of a *slower* process. Wow it's more like it gets thrown at you constantly, not to mention ads, social pressure...etc. My ethos is just to wear what makes u feel good, comfortable, confident.
Also hard agree w the Heaven point. It was cool at the start... but like, the people who are involved w making Heaven cool (the artists, independent designers, etc) wouldn't wear it. The quality is definitely nothing to shout about considering the price too. I think it's good for some people who aren't into the subcultures it's influenced by who may not know where to find similar (more authentic) clothing of this style. I'm curious what other people think about this.

I agree with you that the “high fashion” world is inherently exclusionary and pretentious. I also think that a certain level of exclusionary attitudes in fashion leads to a lack of inspiration and creativity. HOWEVER, when someone takes years and years to develop a craft, skill set, and knowledge base beyond that of others that pursue fashion as a hobby, I do think it should be rewarded. I do acknowledge that there is a difference between pretending to be better than/ know more than others and actually taking the time to devote yourself to fashion history/ textile production. If people market themselves as knowing more than others in the fashion community it may be because the fashion industry is so crowded that they are tired of having to prove their worth with every interaction or new client, etc. The same is true in academia and medicine. As someone in the medical/academia field- it is also incredibly exclusionary, and I don’t think the fashion industry is any more outwardly pretentious than the medical industry/ academia- they’re just pretentious in different ways lol.
I couldn't agree more with the UNIF one, literally don't give a sh!t if they "copy" vintage/deadstock designs simply because they are not copy/pasting but reinventing with their own touch. UNIF is the closest you can get to real authentic 90's... NEW.
The fact that Shein has been named as 2022's most popular fashion brand is simply disturbing and disgusting, god knows what's next with the fashion industry.

Completely agree on your Heaven take. Would love to hear a more in depth video about it, there’s a really good one that @fashionlover4 did that really opened my eyes to their brand as I was simultaneously losing interest & wondering why Heaven was getting more expensive.

I also want to put this out for discussion: Your take on the modeling industry is almost contradictory to your take on the fashion industry being pretentious. It might just be the way I perceived your modeling argument, but it seemed as though you were putting down modeling as a job in saying that it can’t be fulfilling in the long-term. You started to acknowledge that modeling goes beyond someone’s appearance, but it seems like you don’t really believe that modeling really can be an art. It seems almost like an attack on models themselves in that they are inherently insecure and trying to prove their worth through their beauty which is an insulting generalization.
You went on to say later that you aren’t basing your entire worth or finding joy in the medical industry, so then why wouldn’t that be the same with people in the modeling industry? I’m sure plenty of models aren’t content with the industry, but find joy in the work they do- that they could represent their community or thwart traditional beauty standards, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I think the modeling industry and fashion industry both need a complete restructuring to become more inclusionary. Though, I think the way you worded your points made it seem like you were putting down models and people in the fashion industry for not being “smart enough” to pursue another field of study- that it’s much more fulfilling to pursue medicine which is condescending and contradictory to your point of fashion being pretentious. There is value in both modeling and fashion. They are both an art through which to communicate the human experience, and I think both can be aspirational and fulfilling jobs.
