HEH! That is NOT FAIR!!! Comparing Yamaha FD02 With Martin D35 (Story At The End)

  • I found a Dreadnaught Yamaha FD02 Green Label at a second hand store. It was probably an instrument distributed by Costco a few years ago, The comparison with a Martin is extreme, but for what its worth... I think the Yamaha does pretty good!

    I have several Yamahas, including a 1988 FG 450SE, which I bought last summer for equivalent USD70, plays just beautifully.
    I regard guitars like people, each has a different, inimitable character, each with its own qualities. Which sometimes take time to appreciate. And that's the pleasure.

    I bought a Yamaha FG-450SA many years ago. I remember that it was ordered in the shop and I had to wait some weeks for it to arrive (England). It was made in Taiwan. I had 2 lessons and then it went into a wardrobe at my mums' house. Nineteen years later, my mum moved house, and I got it back. It's a great guitar.

      Hello England. I think the FG Yamaha is one of there main designs. I think they are up there in price too! Definitely a head turner when it comes to tone!! Sounds like Mum took great care of it! Thanks for the very enjoyable comment and for listening in❤️

    Beautiful D35! I have a 2021 HD28, and it's my favorite guitar. The sound loud and luscious at the same time, it's wonderful. I use D'addario XS phosphor bronze, but I'll have to give the stringjoys a try, I hear lots of good things. That's great hitchiking story. The days of hitchiking are basically no more, sadly.

      Thanks for the note. Yes those day are definitely past - it was a little dangerous then. Now I think it would be frightening. Maybe I am just older and a bit more conservative. 😀 The Martin you have must sound awesome. Martin guitars never seem to get old -just better 😀

    I have my dad’s Yamaha fg-150 (red label). It was his first guitar from the late 60’s. I’ve read that it was a common guitar to see at Woodstock. It doesn’t seem to be worth much monetarily, but I love to play it. It was my first and is my most-special. I so enjoy your videos!

      The FG was Yamaha’s main all around guitar. They still have an FG series today and it can get quite pricy depending on what you buy. Back in the 60’s and 70’s having a Yamaha was respected with musicians. I can imagine the onevyiy have is probably very well made! And probably made in Japan. Thanks for watching ❤️

      Hey my father had the same guitar and was what I learned on too. He finally bought a D-35 in 1999. Those are the only two guitars he’s owned. Oh wait his was an fg 300 I think. A hummingbird copy.

    No, it's not fair .... but that Yamaha sounds quite pleasant for what it is. Then you pick up the Martin and ... it does explode with sound, there's an unmistakable, delicious attack from the strings whether strummed or picked. It's instantaneous, and then the sustained note dies off elegantly ... and ... and ... I want one!

    • @guitarnotions
      @guitarnotions  5 місяців тому +2

      you definitely cannot miss the quality of tone in the Martin. I can see why a person would want to buy one. This one does not belong to me and unfortunately I have to give it back.🫨 thank you for watching my videos ❤️

      I have 3 guitars here belonging to my singer. He's gone on holidays for a month, so he left them with me. There's an Ovation, a Taylor, and a Martin. I normally play electric, but I took the acoustics for a spin. The Ovation was nice to play, but sounded dreadful. The Taylor was lovely, with a very mid focused, loud tone, but the Martin, a D28, blew me away. It's astounding. I actually wrote a song on it. It just fell out of me when I picked up the guitar. I play electric guitar for a living, and I don't even own an acoustic, but I might have to pick up a Martin.

    Helle from Paris, France. Your video is really spot on. Both guitars are great, each one in its own category. In my opinion, all guitar players (and especially the new ones)should feel thankful to brands like Yamaha, Ibanez or Cort, for offering flawless instruments at such cheap prices. There is absolutely nothing to argue about the sounding of a Martin, but sadly, these guitars are out of reach for many of us.
    The great thing about these cheap estern guitars is that they totally fit the bill in terms of playability. Many of them are perfect for practice... and isn't it what we do most of the time with guitars ?
    I bought a Yamaha F370 some years ago, when I was living in Vietnam. Chose this one because it was the cheapest available there, with a reliable brand name on the headstock. The sound is very "neutral" to say the least, but prefectly balanced from bass to trebles.
    But above all, this guitar is INCREDIBLY easy to play. A perfectly shaped neck, low action, stays in tune. The perfect instrument for beginners, for sure, but also for travellers, and for any skilled instrumentist who doesn't mind to practice on a modest sounding instrument.

      A great guitarist once said there are no bad guitars. That statement might be taking it it a little to far but it sure fits most the time. I have played many I expensive guitars. Some played and sounded better than the pricy guitars. Thanks so much for sharing your perspective and for listening in! ❤️

    Keep the stories coming . Its like being at a folk club in the old days .......great music ,great chat . I think your comparison is interesting and you are correct . Lots of people can only afford a cheaper guitar . I recall my first guitar I bought when I was at school in Glasgow . It cost me 18/- old money from a pawn broker . Got it home and started working on it ....new strings , new bridge ,truss rod tinkering , oiling fret board . Got advice from a teacher who asked me to bring it in . He was amazed . It was a 1940 s Martin . What a great wee guitar that was and I gigged with it for ten years in Scottish folk clubs from Wick to Wigton . Great days .I just love your channel .

    I think every guitar if it’s playable it has its own unique quality. I have a Recording King Greenwich Village. It’s a copy of a Nick Lucas guitar that Bob Dylan use to play. It’s a 00 style deep body with HPL back and sides but it has a really good Spruce top that really rings. A D shaped neck. It’s great for finger style playing. Not much for strumming. It’s a discontinued model. I just love it. Granted when I pick up one of my Martins there’s no comparison but I find myself picking it up all the time.

    As you said you would never be scared to play that Yamaha anywhere, anyhow. I could probably afford a Martin but honestly I wouldn't want to because I'd be scared to play it. In fact I've made it my motto to always buy and play guitars, both acoustic and electric, that I would never be afraid to play or become damaged. Yes that means accepting cosmetic deficiencies and repairing or replacing damaged parts. It's a good way to learn too.

    • @guitarnotions
      @guitarnotions  5 місяців тому

      It is true the least expensive do get played out the most 😀 I enjoy doing the minor repairs and adjustments too. But it is sad when great guitars never leave the case. A few dings and wear builds character 😀 thanks for listening in ❤️
