    🎓 Class of '07, '06, '05? 🙋‍♂🙋‍♀
This comment's for all of you out there that graduated when this song hit the radio stations, back in '05. I was a sophomore then. This song hits like a nostalgic freight train.
After the closing shift at BK I would circle the park near my home just so I could finish this song. Windows were down, summer on my mind. All the sunsets felt like the beginning of a whole new life not knowing what the week would bring. Class of 2007 here 🎓.
Whatever the song meant to you I hope you can always smile on those times and keep those feelings alive, wherever you are and whatever you do.

I first heard this song the summer after I graduated high school on a road trip. It doesn't feel that long ago its wierd to think its been almost 20 years but it brings a wave of nostalgia. Music was better back then the songs had more meaning they weren't this meaningless pop. I think part of the reason why it doesn't feel that long ago was I struggled economically for a while after high school. Its only the last 4 years or so where I've had a good paying job and stable living situation. You think you're life is going to begin right after high school but you still have alot to learn and its quite the journey.

Was in college and college was the best time I ever had but wasted most of 2005 staying indoors pining for an ex girlfriend. If I could only have those several months back and get to live it again but with a "f*** it" attitude, explore the possibilities of other people, taken more risks. Don't waste time young people.

    Allie woke up 8 a.m.
    Graduation day
    Got into a car
    Crashed along the way
And we arrived late to the wake
Stole the urn while they looked away
    And drove to the beach
'Cause I knew you'd want it that way
    And you were standing
On the hood of the car
    Singing out loud
    When the sun came up
    And I know I wasn't right
    But it felt so good
    And your mother didn't mind
    Like I thought she would
And that REM song was playing in my mind
And three and a half minutes
    Felt like a lifetime
    It felt like a lifetime
And you move like water, yeah
    I could drown in you
And I fell so deep once, yeah
Till you pulled me through, ahh
    You would tell me
"No one is allowed to be so proud"
    "They never reach out"
    "When they're giving up."
    And I know I wasn't right
    But it felt so good
    And your mother didn't mind
    Like I thought she would
And that REM song was playing in my mind
And three and a half minutes (half minutes)
    Felt like a lifetime
Are you sitting in the lights?
    Or combing your hair again
    And talking in rhymes?
And are you sitting in the lights?
When I got home, heard the phone
    Your parents had arrived
You know, your dad set his jaw
Your mom just smiled and sighed
But they left soon and I went to my room
Played that disc that you'd given me
You know I shut my eyes
I swear I could hear the sea
    And you were standing
On the hood of your car
Singing out loud when the sun came up
    And I know I wasn't right
    But it felt so good
    And your mother didn't mind
    Like I thought she would
And that REM song was playing in my mind
And three and a half minutes
    Three and a half minutes
    Felt like a lifetime

I got into Better Than Ezra when I was in America in the 90s and am so glad I did, cos they're great! They're hardly known in England (where I'm from) but should be. They're so talented, kick ass and are miles better than most of the crappy, one-hit-wonder bands that are out there and who, sadly, are probably more well known than them despite only having a miniscule amount of talent in comparison to BTE. I hope BTE put out a new album soon :-)

She died when she crashed her car on her graduation day. So her friends went to her wake and stole the urn, and took it to the beach, because that's what she would have liked, better than a stuffy funeral. Your average running time for a song on the radio is about 3 1/2 minutes. He keeps reminiscing about the good times they had together, and the music they liked. Certain songs bring back memories- so 3 1/2 minutes is more than just that- it's part of your lifetime.

You can make a strong case for the song being "Perfect Circle" from Murmur. It's exactly 3:30 in length, and it's an older REM song, so it would coincide nicely with BTE's childhood years. It's also a melancholy, haunting, and elusive song, like of lot of early REM... kind of perfect to listen to if you're desperately sad about the loss of a friend. Runner up possibility would be "Talk About the Passion" (3:23), but I don't think it fits quite as well.

    Perfect Circle by REM
They chose it because it's about 3 1/2 minutes long...just like this song.
And in the lyrics, "3 1/2 minutes felt like a lifetime" kinda all has to mix into this song.
Check out the vid that BTE explains it all... it's called the story behind A Lifetime or something like that. :)

@anlgp Technically, it's still Kevin and Tom with Michael as their drummer. Jim Payne goes on tour as an additional guitarist and keyboardist so I don't necessarily count him as *part of the band.*
