Thank god they didn't have the actors try to use terrible Russian accents. Having them speak in plain English works since we don't have to worry about translation or butchered accents.

    • @markoscream8466
      @markoscream8466 5 років тому +7

Honestly, it would have been much better if they spoke in Russified english. It makes you feel like you're actually there, and has a better feel to it. And on top of all of that, Russians would never say: "Kiss my Russian ass" that's just so British and American. I don't like this trailer at all.

    • @alanz4819

Markoscream I totally disagree. Why have English actors act in a russian accent when they spoke russian in the first place? In this way, they can express subtleties like socioeconomic background with english accents that you could not get with an unauthentic foreign accent.

@@alanz4819 I just hate hearing a perfect British accent in Russia, or any other foreign accent in a country it's not connected to, it's unnatural. I'm only talking about this when it comes to movies, I love foreigners and I love hearing different accents of english, but noz in movies. And that's just my opinion.

@@markoscream8466 In my opinion, casting should go for a true authentic delivery in the native language or stick with what the actors can already portray very well in their own languages. Of course it is extraneous to make actors learn an entire language for a movie but this half-attempt seems disingenuous. For example, Jojo rabbit. Scarlett Johannsen is already a well known actress with a recognizable accent. It totally throws me off when I have to listen to her fake a German accent and I can't concentrate on what's actually going on in the movie.

Since they aren't speaking Russian, and the characters aren't actually speaking English, it would make no sense for them to speak with a Russian accent. I've always hated that stupid movie cliche of conveying that people are foreign by having them speak English with a foreign accent to each other.

Rosengris. I just noticed the number of people being shot almost casually, but it's sometimes a background thing or just a subtle reference "their contract is up" and you don't always see the victim, just the shooter, You get an idea that it's a lot from the pages of death lists being handed out and from the constant fear of being killed, even among the Politburo members, also the way people talk about killings or remember killings or sometimes people supposedly dead returning. It's everywhere in the atmosphere and in the fear of people.

    • @heliotropezzz333

alex, So would you prefer Russians in a Russian film with English subtitles, Russian actors in a British film speaking English with Russian accents, or British actors trying to speak with Russian accents? (Don't forget this is the Soviet Union, not just Russia, and Stalin came from Georgia not Russia. He would have had a Georgian accent). It's a bit old hat these days to try an put on foreign accents. People get distracted by how believable the accents are and it's no more genuine than speaking in their own accents. The best versions are Russian language versions with English subtitles if you want to hear Russian accents but Russia would never make a satirical film about Stalin and not many people watch subtitled films.

An aggressive invading force which he'd spent years supplying and even helped the Nazis train up their military and develop their tanks in Russia so as to evade the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.
Also, if Stalin hadn't joined in with the Nazis to "aggressively invade" Poland then the Nazis wouldn't have been able to defeat France and drive the Brits off the Continent.
And without the Continent secured the Nazis could never have invade the Soviet Union.
So, thanks to Stalin's helping make the Nazis stronger, better trained, better equipped, and have secure borders to their west, the Nazis were thus able to invade and slaughter millions of Russians.
Yeah, lots to thank "Uncle Joe" for, eh?

Some of the comments are laughably stupid. On the one hand, you have people complaining that "This was a bad time in human history! How can we laugh about it?" Get the fuck over it, it's satire, and I suggest you watch Black Adder Goes Forth for a truly awe-inspiring comedy series about WWI which was just as horrific, maybe more so.
On the other hand, you have cunts complaining that "they don't have Russian accents". Why would they be speaking *English* to each other in Russian accents? We are hearing their equivalent of naturally spoken language (from the perspective of the British writers and actors anyway). The idea of having actors speaking English in a foreign accent relative to a certain country was outdated years ago.

Actually his death was rather quiet. By time he passed out he already was away from politics, and events that followed were not so fun in potential. Thrilling for sure, but still they would rather make other genra of film.
Maybe a psycological thriller about Trotskiy rivalring Stalin and witnessing his support being reduced in subtle and then increasingly harsh ways, with culmination being a shot in middle of mexican desert.
Maybe something else. But yep, got to agree - events after Lenin's death are sure good cinema fuel.

  • @KonyCurrentYear
    @KonyCurrentYear 7 років тому +7

The criticisms of this trailer summed up
I don't like this film because I don't like dark political comedy. I don't understand that comedy is the best way of mocking authoritarian regimes. I personally don't understand black humour at all and don't know about the events surrounding Stalin's death and why it is such a good setting for a political comedy.
I don't like this film because I am a Communist and I don't like having the realities of Inner Party Communist politics after a power vacuum being exposed in a humorous way that makes my ideology look fucking retarded.
I don't like this film because I am a Russian Nationalist that wants to defend a Georgian street thug that starved and enslaved my people and nearly lost the war but I have to defend this monster or face the idea of Westerners mocking my nations history. I am simply here to autistically screech about this film mocking my country's past which contains events that are easily exploitable for a dark political comedy. I must defend my country's honour like the little Putin sycophant I am.
I don't like this film because the actors use their native accents instead of constantly using dodgy Russian ones. I am unbelievably petty to not see past this aspect of the film.
I don't like this film because the actors are not Russian. I do not understand that this film is for a *English speaking audience* and so having Russian actors does not add to the film. I cannot see that this film has great comedic actors like Jeffrey Tambor, Steve Buscemi, Micheal Palin and Jason Isaacs that are seasoned actors that will likely do great performances in this film. Never mind that I want some B list Russian actors to do the parts.

It's not "hypocritical" at all. They don't want to be a target of the Russian cyberwar campaing and have stupid flamewars in their comment section.

Jorma Jurrila same thing with Stalin he silenced all opposition because he doesn't want to be a target of western propaganda war against him. you can't silence everyone cuz your afraid of criticism and say it's because of Russian cyberwar. actually that's how dictatorship works.

My grandma was a young girl in primary school when Stalin died.
She told me, the whole class and teacher were crying while she was trying to start crying also, she was just 9 years old, she felt so ashamed that she didn't manage to cry as all the others. she has been thinking that something was wrong with her, she just hided her face with her hands so no one would see and tried to make some crying noise.
BTW, I you think that only Russian people are affected by patriotic propaganda, you are wrong...

I was an American soldier. There is a saying ... "Once A Soldier, Always A Soldier". Our governments will exist ... "in disagreement." I saw the horrors of war. I only ask about this, because I hope that you are a real "free" citizen of Russia ... What is the sense of war between Russia and the United States of America? What are your thoughts and feelings?

Я только прошу об этом, потому что надеюсь, что вы настоящий «свободный» гражданин России ... Каково ощущение войны между Россией и Соединенными Штатами Америки? Каковы ваши мысли и чувства?

''22 million'', wrong...during political persecutions 1937: 353,074 shot dead, 1938: 328,612 shot dead, Golodomor in all republics (50% of that number in ukraine) 247,157, executed soldiers that committed desertion 1941-1944: circa 158,000, died from deportation 1922-1940: circa 390,000, other political executions 1921-1953: 799,455, died in Gulags circa 1,700,000 (most of them in the most notorious one called ,Butigichag' on the far east of the country, over 300,000)...you do the math...don't listen to any one who tries to deny or exaggerate it...they are both lying...

I want to take this opportunity to debunk some of the assumptions people are erroneously making about this film:
    - This movie is about what happened just AFTER the death of Stalin. It doesn't go out of its way to victimize or the man, and it is certainly not focused on him. It is chiefly about the mad scramble for power by his inner circle for the vacuum his death leaves behind.
    - This wasn't made, directed, or even produced anywhere near Hollywood. This is a joint British-French-Canadian independent film that just happens to have the cast and production quality of a potential Hollywood feature.
    - As emphasized by many of the more level-headed in the comments, this film is a work of comedy and satire by the formidable Armando Iannucci, who made his name crucifying (with great hilarity) Western governments. Why he should be stopped from giving the Russians (and eventually the Germans, but hell, they get enough wacky Nazi films already) the same treatment is bordering on hypocrisy.
    - Finally, as also an incidental work of history the film takes some significant pains to introduce some figures in the then-Presidium that have, to my knowledge, never been introduced in Western media. Who can say from a diet of Western TV, films, and other popular media that they have heard the names of Mikoyan, Bulganin, Kaganovich, or even Malenkov? The effort alone is quite admirable.

Very well put! Agreed I belive people can be misled easily with films like these espcially with this trailer !!! It is much darker then the trailer gives away ! watched this with school as we're learning about the Russia in History, so yeah the circumstances in which I watched it wasn't great ... The trailers pretty good though you can find out about that here:faithtrustandpixedust.blogspot.co.uk/ (if you care to scroll down just a bit ), if your interested to see exactly what I thought. I'm a new blogger btw and still trying to figure out how to make it successful so if you/anyone got any hints/ tips feel free to share, please! Thanks! :) I also have another blog that's science-based if anyone's also interested? links here:nikkiandscience.blogspot.co.uk/ again I know there's not a lot , but I'm just starting out and so your help would really be appreciated as I really would like to grow these!
