In this video I install a new catastrophic fuse on my 464 amp hour 4 golf cart RV battery bank. I explain why I wanted this new one versus the old one and why I chose 200 amps.
I chose to use a MRBF terminal fuse from Blue Sea Systems so the fail-safe protection could be as close to the battery terminal as possible.

Hi Ray. Thanks for the video. I really enjoy all your videos. I have a question about the way you wired the fuse block to your battery bank. You put both the red cable (call it #1), that connects the battery on the right to the battery on the left, on top of the block, and the red cable (#2) that is the positive feed from the battery bank to your rig. Since the #1 cable is part of the battery bank, shouldn't it be on the battery terminal under the terminal block so it protects the whole battery bank. Seems like your bypassing the fuse on part of your battery bank Thanks again.

on fuses F50A would be a fast acting, F=Fast, T50A is a slow acting, T=Time delay., no letter means average/normal.

There are special Insulated Nuts for these MRBFs in the market. With said Insulated Nut, you wont need this MRBF terminal at all. You simply insert the MRBF on the battery's bolt terminal, then insert the cable terminal lug and finally use the Insulated Nut that insulate the terminal lug from the bolt. Caveat, the bolt should be long though...

Your wiring "mistake" is actually a useful other way of wiring parallel batteries. That is, an MRBF on the other battery's post, then an MRBF on the joining post. That way each battery is fused independently.
Thank you for replying. Yes, I do have a 2000W inverter and am researching a 12v lithium batteries ( 2 for a battery bank ) . Can I ask which lithium batteries you choose ?

Of all the ones I've reviewed, I like Lion Energy the best as far as USA companies but they are pricier of course. For Chinese based I like the Aolithium brand. But there are many more brands out there so it's hard to say which is ultimately the best out there.

Educational video , thank you . I noticed your battery bank consisted of 4 interstate 6 volt batteries, is there a reason that you choose these batteries over others and would you be able to run a Keurig coffee maker with this ?
I picked Interstate because they have many dealers in the USA and Canada, and I travel a lot. So if need be, it would be easy to get a warranty replacement. Shipping 66 lb. batteries could be a pain and expensive. My rationale was better if there is a nearby dealer to physically go to. Also, Interstate batteries are pretty decent. I used them for years and then sold them with good life left when I got lithium instead. As far as the coffee maker goes, 4 golf cart batteries can supply the needed energy, but you'll need a 2000-watt inverter as well to provide the AC wattage.

Sir, I love the fuse and I will be getting one soon. However, I think you have one wire in the wrong location. You have 4 6-volt batteries wired in a series-parallel configuration to provide the coach with 12 volts with more amps. The positive wire on the right pair of batteries should be connected to the positive terminal of the left battery and not the upper fused connector. In the current configuration the fuse only protects the left pair of batteries. The right pair would still be connected. Just a minor change. Thanks again.

Hi Ray, I always wondered why you stayed with a 12 volt battery bank and did not choose to go with 24 volts?
Just easier, since all the RVs circuits are 12 volt and I had a 12 volt inverter already.
Greetings Ray, would it matter if you fused the negative post of the battery bank? I know that your cap is red, but can you get a black one?
I don't think it would matter, I know some cat fuses are on the negative post. I believe I read some OEMs do it that way.
I like to have all my devices on the positive side just to keep things uniform. At least the next owner, if there is one, won't have to guess when they see a breaker or fuse and will know its a positive lead. Sorry, I'm not sure if they come in black.
I have been using one of those double terminal fuse blocks with one fuse for my inverter and the other for my charge controller. I have yet to blow a fuse though, but I keep a couple spares on hand.
Thanks for the great video Ray. My wife and I always watch but lately she’s complaining that your channel is just for the guys and not for the woman folk. My wife likes to take pictures while we’re camping so maybe someday you could have your wife do a video on photography or some other subject that maybe geared to the woman who watch your channel.

Could be but check your inverter manual it is possible you may need a 400 amp fuse for a 3000-watt inverter depending on its surge rating. Many inverters can put out more watts than the continuous wattage rating so have to be fused to accommodate the surge.
Thanks Ray, couldn't find this item in 400 amps. I did find one like your old one (class T I believe). Any preference between it and the ANL type blade fuse?
Not really, I imagine either would do the job well. The biggest concern I'd think is to also make sure the wire gauge is beefy enough when dealing with high amps like that. An undersize wire could still smoke and melt without taking out the high amperage fuse.
No comments about both wires on top of the fuse? The jumper wire from the other battery should remain on the battery terminal. Only one wire, to the RV, should be "after" (on the fuse terminal) .

Hi Ray, Should I put a catastrophic fuse on the installation of my two Lion Energy batteries too? it looks like useful extra protection everyone should have?
I have two positive cables, one that goes left to the inverter under the bed and the other goes right to all the trailer's wiring upfront. So, it would be those two cables at the top of the fuse.
My inverter is a 1000W peak 2000, low voltage 10V .

It's always a good idea to fuse every cable in system in case one of the cables ever touches the trailer frame, but also the Lion batteries do have their own short circuit protection built-in to them. So, not as big a problem like with lead-acid batteries. With the Lion Energy batteries, it's like a double protection.

What if you have 400 amp battry bank?
I think you may be confusing amp hour capacity with amp output. You want the fuse to be a little bit above the max amps you will be drawing from the battery bank to power things. 400 Amp hours of battery capacity is common, it only takes about 4 batteries, but to draw 400 amps would be a lot for the average RV DC power system.
I wish it was a switched fuse block.

HELP,,,this fuse /breaker stuff is confusing me. i bought a power jack 5000 watt/20000 watt surge inverter/ charger . my 1400 watt AC blew the inverter fuse. it was only 25 amps? it has an 80 amp charger.i was told i needed 00 gage cables so i got them. i have 24vdc/109 Ah deep cell [2 x 12 ] and want a breaker /cut off on those cables ,so i asked them what size .they said 20 amp 250 volt.thats not right.this is lucky to make 3000 watts and as far as i can tell,the 20000 watt surge rating is a myth. still works great though overrated. i think they had told me use 300 AMP FUSE on those battery cables,BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT I HAVE ON THERE NOW. I can't get a straight answer and when i do get them to email an answer,it is is in chinglish and makes no freaking sense. i want to get this put back together, but not till i know what is really safe.that 25a/32 volt inverter fuse blew instantly trying to start the soleus AIR,portable AC/heater unit. so any help would be great.
Here is a chart with recommended inverter cable and fuses sizes - www.altestore.com/howto/recommended-inverter-cables-sizing-and-breakers-or-fuses-a62/ AC units usually have a large start-up current demand to get the compressor going, your cheap inverter may not be able to deliver it.
One thing I also notice is you only have 2 batteries 12 volt 105AH, those will struggle to provide enough amperage to run the AC, you should have at least 4 and better to have 6. Even if your 2 batteries can run it don't expect it to run longer than maybe 45 minutes to 1 hour before the batteries are run down. Good luck, Ray
Why don’t you just edit this video with a photo of the correct parallel battery wire placement? It would take a few minutes and you’d be putting out 100% correct info.
Overkill for your set up. The odds you would ever short out that short length of cable is minimal.
I'll go with overkill. Years of repairing electronics has given me a healthy respect for what can happen. I even destroyed a few of my own tools and started a fire or two. ;)
