I actually travelled on the XPT and Gold Coast Motorrail along this line, it's a beautiful branch line,.
If you get the chance I recommend the Otago Rail Trail in New Zealand. They will arrange to pick you up and take you back to Queenstown airport, package the accommodation , organise the bikes , shuttle you back at the end and take your luggage for you to your accommodation each night. It's brilliant and you can do it on budget to 5 star if you wish, it's about 160km
