Bonegilla has a huge amount of history for such a small station. All those post ww2 migrants, in victoria, were sent there initially. Taken from ships at Station Pier in Mebourne and transported to a form of incarceration towards lake Hume until vacancies opened up for them in the workforce. A LOT of traffic for a wayside station. Another point that you may not know is that once the railway was closed all the girders from the Sandy Creek bridge were removed and it was a dangerous 10 km detour on the highway to get around. After a long battle the bridge was finally restored. Making the trip from Huon to New Tallangatta a safe and pleasant experience. (Except for the black snakes which love to sun themselves on the bitumen).

Thanks for the great UA-cam of one of my favourite local rides. Refreshing to see it from an outsiders view. A few comments from a locals view are: An easy gradient because trains don’t like steep hills! The wooden planked bridge at 10:41 should not be taken too fast as the planks are quite uneven and warped and will rattle the fillings out of your teeth. The Kiewa River is pronounced by us locals as “Kee war” and the track on the Wodonga side of it can be a bit rough due to flooding occasionally in the winter. Overall though the unsealed few kilometres of the track are good, fast, fine gravel and buckshot. In my personal opinion the sealing of a lot of the track that they did in 2023 (I think) homogenised it somewhat and took away some of its character. If you travel this trail in spring you have to be aware of the Kamikaze magpie about 1.5km from the Sandy Creek bridge. He is a real nuisance. I have had several helmet strikes and so now I pick up a stick to wave on my way past. Shame you were not able to spare the time and ride the extra 10km up to Tallangatta for a coffee cake at the bakery. Thanks again. Really enjoyed the experience without any effort on my part!

Thanks for the feedback and back round information. Another time I road this trail I did meet the magpie that you referred to! Next time we would love to get to Tallangatta or even further.
