Thank you so much for your videos. They have been a true breakthrough for me. I have my grandma's Union Loom Works loom, but in pieces. My aim is to get it going again, but I have been intimidated by the enormity of assembling it and prepping it to weave. Your videos have helped me immensely in understanding what I'm looking at in all these pieces. (I do have the manual, which is enormously helpful.) Onward!
I have a Union #36 as well. I acquired it in the late 70's from my maternal grandfather when he passed. I set it up and used it for a couple of years in the mid to late 90's. Since then it's been disassembled and moved. I've been binge-watching your vids here on UA-cam and was inspired to put the loom back together and get it up and running again. So that's what I did today. I put it back together. Amazingly there was still warp on the warp beam. Once I got it all assembled again I started to thread the heddles. I can't believe I'm doing this after all the time that's passed. I'm very excited to start weaving again!
I've got my grandma's Union Loom Works loom--in pieces. I've been so intimidated, having no idea where to even start. Any tips for assembling, Paul Nielsen? These videos are definitely a treasure; they are the breakthrough I needed. Going to do it.
Thanks a lot for sharing your process! I study weaving in a small association of artisans at the Minas Gerais state here in Brazil. Your video helps me a lot! We have new equipments to setup with similar tension bar to deal. I'm keep watching you! A big hug from brazil!
Hey I’m wondering how to change the sett if I wind on more than 14 sections? I repaired some missing pegs since my last warp and I wound on 19 sections. I’m assuming I’ll start threading the heddles and such just the same -
Hi - my Union 36 does not have nails on the sectional warp holder. How else could I tie the sections of warp on without causing tension issues? The nails you have on yours are pretty darn slick.
Hi Claudia. Just need to clarify what you mean by sectional warp holder. If you mean the warp beam then you should be able to add some nails yourself. The nails are small. They have a small head on them so the warp strings do not pop off. I don’t really know of any other way to tie on. Hope that helps. Lisa
Thanks for sharing this video made me put back my Sectional bar back on the loom. Much easier that I thought. Are your warp threads 4/4 seems to much thicker than 8/4 rug which I use? And I love your stool where did your find it??? I’m also a cabinet maker I would like one for myself. Thank
Your very welcome!! My warp is 8/4 poly cotton. My stool was made by the Amish and it came from Pennsylvania where my boyfriends family lives. Have a great day. Lisa
Glad you enjoyed the video. Warp varies somewhat but you can use this for a guide: 20 turns of the crank equals 10 yards of warp 38 turns equals 20 yards of warp 70 turns equals 40 yards of warp.
Thank you so much!!! I was about to give up when I came across your videos! I totally connect with the way you explain everything. I just purchased thread (8/4 Cotton) 1/2 lb rolls= 800yds ea. I think. (I bought 20 spools) Is this anything close to what you are using in this video? My loom was warped when I bought it so this is the first time I’ve wound warp myself. Can I wind it 90 times with that size thread? Also, the warp currently on it seemed to tangle and such a bit- is there any precaution to be aware of as I warp to prevent that from happening?
Hi there. My spools are exactly the same and I use 20. To prevent tangling while winding the warp on make sure to use all the thread guides that you have available on your loom and wind on steadily but not quickly. Turning the handle too fast will cause problems also.. I’m glad that my videos are helping. Thanks. Lisa.
As far as the number of turns per spool, it varies. Some of the spools I receive have less or more on each one. Drives me nuts!! 90 turns is a safe number but you will have some leftover. I just use that for another project. If your spools look even you might try a few more turns.
It depends on the length of the rugs you are making. Since I use recycled material my rug lengths vary. My rugs are between two and three feet long usually. You have to allow space in between rugs for finishing so approximately three rugs. Hope that helps.

That is awesome!!! Love to hear that my videos are helping. Good luck with your loom and let me know how it goes. Thank you for watching.

Thank you I just purchased a very old sears loom with a sectional beam and this helps a lot
Thanks again for uploading this!
Interesting video. How do you ensure the threads all have the same tension?
Hi, do you sell the guide with holes. ??
How do you deal with a knot in the warp string?

Great video. How many full turns equals a foot or a yard? Thank you.
