Fuckin respect for Bear Grylls !! if u served with the SAS and climbed Everest did the stupid doctors really believe that a broken back would stop this guy ? What amazing will power !!

***** What do you mean get over him ? Why are you here watching a Bear Grylls video if you don't like him aka pointless ? So I take it YOU are in the SAS, and has served on real operations ? And you have also broken your back from a parachute jump and got back on track despite doctors telling you you might never walk again ? This guy is out there facing challenges and trying to inspire real people. How about you take your hate somewhere else and fuck off ?

+jon willard nonsense! Muscle gene type helps, but they are not competing, instead enduring!
So you can get fit enough... But not many will pass the mental challenge for the physical fitness and also have the desired aptitudes.. You can increase endurance (slow twitch ) but not fast twitch by comparison )
If you are shorter, u have an advantage carrying kit.. Plus 6 feet, more levers and bad backs! Many Scots are short and lean; Ghurkas too...

    • @neobliviscarisa650
      @neobliviscarisa650 8 років тому +2

***** What are you talking about!! First of all, power lifters with short levers = more efficient lifting potential! Whether Scottish or any other country you are from! Not all Ghurkas are short, as with Fijians.. But ultimately, genes etc plays a part, but the mind is 80% of the challenge overall.. as you can not train that to quite the same capacity as the body...
Secondly, the SF's do not want people with bad backs... Prolapse discs etc are not conducive to prolonged endurance.. it could incapacitate you on a mission, not provide focus as you put it.. I was an osteopath once!
SF's may lead to bad knees and backs later on in your career, but certainly not desirable.

This is pissing me off! Okay I think Bear Grylls over tells stories and does lie but saying 'oh he was only SAS reserve' is just crap. SAS reservists go through basically the same selection as 22 SAS. They are helped a bit more because most who join won't likely have combat experience but it's still regarded the toughest thing out there. If it was 'just normal shit' then nearly every man in Britain would be apart of the SAS reserves. When Bear says '150 started and at the end we only had 4' then that should show you how bloody hard it is. I doubt I'd be able to do it and I doubt any of you keyboard warriors could either!

People often undermine the TA SAS.. It is a little daft really... They have to pass the similar tests as the regulars do.. The SAS and SBS do not take second best for a simple reason. They are expected to support the regulars in real time combat. Sure, you can argue the regulars live and breath it. But nowadays, due to supply and the structural reliance on the TA, they will be actively engaging in missions for long tours I am sure. So that argument gap is perhaps narrowing.
But the difference is that these guys have professional skills outside of the army, which indirectly can be useful. Some argue that TA selection is harder in terms of self motivation, as you do not build up the momentum like the regulars do, instead, constantly stopping and starting each week to get there , while holding down a regular job as well! You either have the psychotic switch to deal with trauma and overcoming inertia or you do not. The whole control process seems to be more about messing with the mind, with a strong will being the most unique characteristic required to pass, alongside intelligence. That is why so many come from broken homes. Escape and evasion borderlines torture. they even play tricks to fool you confidence, and find out your worst fears and use them against you, when you have not eaten or slept for days after miles of marching. an old friend who was a lawyer passed selection, and it was no walk in the park!
Grylls has paraglide over Everest falling 1000's of feet a second time; and achieved other records as well.. so he is a little more than just show! maybe he did not gain battle honours... so what... at least he can live without post traumatic stress, which many of the regulars end up with moving to civi street.. Instead, getting his kicks out of extreme survival antics..even if a little contrived. I am sure if he was required to have fought, the fact that he passed selection etc would statistically have meant he would have lived up to the task. Ranulph Fiennes did!

The RM in the recent SAS Who Dares Wins series on ch 4 has his own training regime, based on the type of fitness required to serve in SF's. i.e. the balance of endurance, static strengths and resistance workouts... if you google the channel 4 series you will see it..

The TA is the Territorial Army now know as the Army Reserve they are Part time soldiers, however they do serve when required and can be called up at any time due to their skill-sets. The regular SAS depending on which Troop are often deployed on the more high-stakes missions that you mention in the same role as the US Delta Force.

Special Air Service Reserves (SAS (R)) comprising of 21 SAS and 23 SAS were formed in 1947 and 1959 respectively. SAS(R) are tasked to the highest level and can operate in difficult and often changing circumstances, sometimes in absence of guidance and within situations that have significant operational and strategic importance.
The kind of individuals required to operate successfully in these circumstances are not found in abundance. The selection process for entry into SAS(R) seeks to identify the qualities and potential of those suitable for service within SAS(R).
    Applicants for SAS(R)
SAS(R) accept male applicants who have no previous military service aged 18 to 32 years and 364 days or male applicants who have had previous military service with any part of the Regular or Reserve Armed Forces (RN, RM, Army, and RAF) up to the age of 34 years and 364 days. Applicants must be able to commit to considerable training demands and willing to deploy overseas.
SAS(R) Support (capability) Staff are not required to pass selection however must maintain a level of fitness and commitment. Age Limits 18 to 49 years and 364 days. The specific trades required in support of SAS(R) are:
Drivers, Chefs, Vehicle Mechanics, Vehicle Electricians, Clerical staff and Royal Marine Reserves willing to transfer to the units.
Medical Staff are also required however they must have either previous military service with qualifications to CMT1 level or a civilian who holds a national qualification in emergency response, paramedic or nursing.
Support (capability) staff are required to hold full trade qualifications (Class 3 minimum) before applying.

Shannon, you seem quite well informed. However, I believe the point being made by many who post is NOT...repeat NOT the tavr v regi.e 21/23 SAS (22 being the regular s/f regt) More to do with the fact that Mt grylls ALWAYS gives the impression to his audiences that he was indeed a former member of the 365/24/7 regular 22 regiment special air service. WHICH, OF COURSE HE NEVER WAS...
People are not idiots. Furthermore, former active operators in 22 have stated that the guy is & i quote what they term as a '''semi walt''' in that, yes he was badged & earned the right to both wear the sand lid, & blue staple belt ( A.K.A. the sash) however, as for doing the c.t/sabre sqn stuff. . ( black kit) stuff, Mr, Grylls, has, as much real time experience of a flash bang or H&K MP5 as your average guy down at the rose & crown.pub.
People would have allot more respect for the guy, if he was up front & stated he was a former reservist. As opposed to 'inferring''' he was an ex 22 reg trooper.
      Ex Reg Army vet.

Bear Grylls is a SAS actor, he aint shit compared to some of the ex SAS soldiers, eating worms and doing survival shit has very little to do with the actual war operations, a lot of stuff that Bear does would get you killed behind enemy lines straight away ... If you want to find out more about Special Air Service I recommend checking out Eddie Stone and John Mac...

21 and 23 are soon to be removed from the umbrella of United Kingdom Special Forces and designated as standard TA regiments. They also march the hills every other weekend. The regulars do the hills everyday for four weeks. By the final week that's like running over a marathon distance a day after having already been fucked up for 3 weeks. The reservists have two weeks to recover between each march. Their training is hugely similar to regular reservists, nothing like the regulars.

The TA SAS go through a brutal selection and training regime, however their training is a FAR stretch from what the regulars go through. It'd be like comparing P-Company or the Commando Course to the UKSF course - apples and oranges. 21 and 23 won't even be coming under the umbrella of UKSF for much longer.

@drpiddleton continuation for reserves and regulars is the same course, conducted together. They are obviously not as well trained, as they are not full time soldiers, but that does not mean it's any easier to get into SF(R). The SBS(R) do the same reserve selection course and are deployed as replacements with the regular SBS, it's not going to be that much easier is it? Cue moronic comments about the SBS being 'Tier 2' etc. etc.

They have a common UK special forces training just like the SBS. What happens after that is a guessing game.

    Er?No they don't .
Selection consists of the following phases:
    1. APTITUDE
Physical and mental stamina, along with navigational ability are stretched to the limit over series of tests. The aptitude phase culminates with a 64 kilometer march, with a 60lbs bergen, over the Brecon Beacons in Wales. Aptitude consists of:
9 x weekends of endurance training.
1 x week endurance training in the Brecon Beacons.
1 x week assessment (Test Week) in the Beacons.

There is a lot of misconceptions about what SAS is.
21 SAS are the oldest SAS regiment in existence. There would be no 23 or 22 with 21 being reformed in 1949.
21 primary goal during WW2 was to act as an unconventional force if the Germans invaded the UK. In other words sabotage.
Politics today means that different regiments are fighting among themselves for their very existence.
There is rumours that Royal Marines and Paratroopers will be merged.

bighands69 it was 1 SAS in ww2 though known as 'the originals', disbanded at the end of the war. Reformed as 21 SAS for the Malaysia emergency I believe. They didn't exist as a TA unit though. just a part time operational regiment; the men were regular soldiers from different units who came together for operations. They then created 22 and made 21 a TA unit. a strange decision. 23 was added in the 60's.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 7 років тому

21 SAS reformed in 1949 to save the SAS which was effectively disbanded at the end of WW2.
Their primary goal was to ensure that Special Service Soldier capabilities from WW2 would be kept active. Their problem is not that they have become TA their problem is that politics is messing with the armed services as a whole. They only care about financial cuts.
21 SAS was even used in Iraq for general patrols. That is how badly managed modern armed services have become. 23 is fighting for its own survival and in effect are attacking 21.
This attitude has become the norm in modern services. And the new things seems to be getting an existing army regiments sending them on an all arms commando course and then calling them Commandos.

You lost any semblance of credibility at "Even within 22 there are probably differently trained groups" (there are, they're called Boat Troop, Mountain Troop, Mobility Troop and Air Troop) and "the idea of combining other units like the Para and RMC", which has never been even a remote possibility.
