    "People start to compete to write the best article" - yea, best as in highest rated. Not most factual, or information rich.
    It deafens the conversation because unconventional points of view will just be rated "wrong" by the ignorance of the majority.

      Exactly... the "best article" will be the one most people like, which could be for subjective reasons...
      I think that would create a market where:
      a) people write articles made to appeal to majority of viewers, no matter the facts
      b) there WILL be paid auto-rating services to boost certain articles
      Also about the "Wikipedia is one article/one view per topic" claim... I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, simply because they are purely objective and fact-based and editable by anyone. They don't present opinions, they present facts. If a fact/study/evidence is missing, you can just add it yourself, therefore there is no need to have more than one article on a given topic.

    • @MrEvilGalith
      @MrEvilGalith 6 років тому +37

      I strongly agree. The point of an encyclopedia is to agregate "all" the "objective", or at least factual, knowledge. Wikipedia uses the contributors to verify the articles and sources and the goal is to erase the points of view. For me, the idea saying that what is popular is true is a incorrect.

    • @PsyArkron
      @PsyArkron 4 роки тому +12

      The same part also got me... If it's stored in a datacenter, then it's a database, not the blockchain. That's just your traditional, plain, old database. The whole point of the blockchain is to have a distributed storage of data over the whole globe, with not single person or enitiy in control of it.

  • @plasmaballin

    The new UA-cam competitors sound like a good idea, but the new Wikipedia sounds like a very bad one. Having multiple articles that appeal to different demographics rather than one objective article is a terrible idea, it will only lead to more people becoming trapped in filter bubbles. If there are no objective sourcex for people to read, they will have no way of telling if their filter bubble is really telling them the truth. It also could be a threat to privacy if you have to share large amounts of personal info with the wiki every time you use it.

    • @MrJcshorey
      @MrJcshorey 4 роки тому

      It's very bold of you to assume what is an objective source. It's nearly impossible to remain objective and the closest you can get to an objective truth is the average of multiple educated people's opinions. If you had a decentralised rating system that takes into account personal education and perspective, then the top rated article would be the closest thing to objective truth. I believe it has a lot of potential.

    • @plasmaballin
      @plasmaballin 4 роки тому +1

      @@MrJcshorey The average of multiple educated people's opinions is already what Wikipedia gives, and it's the exact opposite of what you would get if you tried to split Wikipedia into multiple wikis for different demographics. You would end up with people reading the version of Wikipedia that is biased to appeal to them, as opposed to everyone reading the same information, which does have a lot of strict rules to make sure everything is factual and unbiased. Also, I don't think it's as impossible to remain objective as you think. That type of thinking is what got us into the post-truth mess we're currently in.

      Clearly block chain is most important technology. There is no comparison to something unimportant like modern cryptography of public/private keys - asymmetric encryption.
      There is no way to ensure a document or information is exactly what it should be, with proof that it wasn't tampered with, without the use of block chain.
      The future is having every computer on earth to have it's own copy of every block chain (looking at the video, probably tens of thousands in near future) (bit coin is just mere 149GB, so simple math of multiplying it should all fit on floppy disk).
      Just having the data is not enough, everyone needs to mine every single block, or how we can be sure it's safe? Those blocks will die without the community. BitCoin only uses 0.27% of all energy production on earth, if we use all energy, we can clearly do 1000x as many.
      PS. Above is mostly sarcasm and obvious errors mostly for humor, don't mind it too much.

    "The best system will come out on top", Really? In the history of computing I have yet to see the best system win out. Happened before mainstream computing with Betamax and VHS and went on happening when computers came along. The best system is NOT always the one that most people end up using. As for competition to determine which articles rise to the top, have these people EVER seen the videos on UA-cam that have millions of views and likes? The system is polluted with nonsensical crap. The 10 best lists, $1 this Vs $1000 that, talking heads that regurgitate garbage that other talking heads spouted. If you are relying on users to determine what will rise to the top, you need your head examined. Still, the system we have now is so badly flawed, I do hope that Blockchain does something to fix the current divisive nature of the net.

    • @NickCombs
      @NickCombs 6 років тому +4

      Yes, there’s a big element of timing involved with becoming the market leader in an emerging technological industry. Since nothing like it has existed before, you only need to make enough forward progress for users to be impressed at the crucial time when the mainstream jumps in. In this situation it can be detrimental to over engineer the product, extending its development cycle or budget too far. But of course the opposite can also be true.

    • @ageofdoge
      @ageofdoge 6 років тому +18

      Well, maybe not the "best" in purely technical terms. A technically great system with crappy marketing against a workable competitor that has better network effect isn't likely to win despite being a better design.
      However if one system is 5x as efficient as it's competitor I think it will likely win out. Even if poorly implemented these are the kinds of things that can be copied and retried by others.
      VHS vs Betamax is pretty weak actually. There are some good comparison / review videos here on UA-cam and it's honestly not the big of a gap. Being marginally better isn't going to automatically make something win, but that doesn't mean the whole concept should be tossed out.
      If you don't want the nonsensical crap then choose your point of view as they put it. Your complaint is the exact thing they were talking about fixing.
      User voting works great. Look at reddit. Is there a lot of crap on reddit that you don't want? Yeah, but you can choose what kind of content you value and subscribe to the corresponding subs. They generally get crappier as they grow to large, but people just make alternative ones with more specific interest. That's what this is, but decentralized.
      Blockchain isn't likely to make people or the internet less divisive, but it can and probably will allow us to remove the middle men, and censors from our online interactions with others.

      +Western Australia Now and Then agreed, I've seen promising technologies whither through lack of support and public appreciation. If most popular = best then Coca-Cola and McDonald's would qualify in their fields. The issue I see in a blockchain encyclopaedia is the atomisation and relativisation of knowledge. How can anyone communicate when they don't agree on terms and definitions?

  • @JannisX11

    So to be honest, I don't think the new Wikipedia is a good idea. Wikipedia has always been somewhat objective. If we get a bunch of of articles about every topic, each article would get less objective. Also, there would be less people to correct the article because there are more articles to correct or they could just write their own. This would lead to less discussion about articles and ultimately a lower quality and a higher chance of missinformation.

    • @adolfodef
      @adolfodef 6 років тому +29

      This is the reason why nobody cares about "the other wikies"; they do not have enough eyes on them (and even worse, not enough fingers) for their content to be relevant.
      -> The actual idea behind this "new Wikipedia" is to have the standard Wikipedia article "as default"; then if you do not like it you can read "alternative truths" from those groups just like you can currently check the same article in another languages [for certain topics it is about the same...].

      Argamis (SilverComet) Yes. Everipedia is a way to profit from Wikipedia while adding a few things. They also don’t have website hosting costs so they can be a parasite on everyone else storage and bandwidth.
      Everipedia’s fundamental conception runs against the ethos of an encyclopaedia as an authoritative source of knowledge. It it’s place we have post-modern “competing narratives” which are voted for. It’s really an assemblage of a selection of things from the internet and they want us to create personal profiles so they can sell that information to advertisers. I suspect it will find an audience but their versions of the Wikipedia articles will gradually diverge and their site will get filled with low quality, but referenced, information.
      Will most Wikipedia editors switch over? Personally I doubt it.

Yet this video mentions it a single time to criticize it then lauds platforms that don't even exist yet and are literally following down the path that Ethereum blazed. It's seriously myopic. People in the Ethereum space have literally been talking about the exact subject matter in this video for years now and now this video emerges and acts like this is all new and Ethereum isn't even important. It’s not nearly as sinple as it is laid out in in this video. One example is smart contracts, and the statement that there will be “no 3rd parties”; Hardly any agreement of significance can be solved with smart contracts as it is today. In addition, regulation is entirely ignored in these thoughts, and that is not likely to be actually beneficial to society.
    A last side comment is about youtube competitors with no ads, no ‘censorship’, and with users getting paid - How is that a viable idea? Think of a single site, or place today where there are no rules or regulations - it does not work like that - you don’t use them. And as soon as you find out that you need moderation, you also find out that you need money to do that, so you’ll stop paying users, or start displaying ads, If not both, and what you have now is a less popular, less viable youtube clone.

    • @StefanoPapaleo-TS

      Another one with a working brain! Yeah... let's just ignore laws because... no one will notice, right? Or human nature. You can put in code whatever you want. Unless, it is really something truely automatic and not human-depenant, any other type of service - from pizza delivery to a company merger - is out of the question. Or all of a sudden we've become so good we do not litigate, find excuses, make mistakes, are alwyas honest and agree on everything? The contract can be as smart as you like but if the parties involved are not... good luck with that.

Perhaps this could have been resolved with a question, as obnoxious as that resolution tactic is. The question/s I'd like to propose are not ones that I have any higher understanding of, I cannot answer myself. I do know of what I do not know - and I think this should be used to understand our world and be the basis for how we form/present our views.
      Enough of my big (dumb) head; I ask you, what do you know of the methods used to encrypt, share, and validate the "blocks" in the chain? Do you have an understanding of what is required to corrupt the chain or to inject the chain with false data? Do you have any idea how automated/controlled generation of programming code(machine readable language) is done? - If not, perhaps you have used Adobe Flash, "" Dreamweaver, Visual Studio, or maybe Unity? Can you imagine this software using using something like a cloud network to validate it's self?
      Have you ever played a pirated game that seamlessly interacted with the Steam online services as though it were an unaltered version of that game? How long do you think it would last before, at the very least, your Steam services shut down. The BlockChain "as a service" would be one with many rules. Like Steam, the service might use it's rules as algorithms to ensure the service works. In another likeness it is easy to assume that any one persons personal computer network is filled with security holes and is easy to break into.
      I find it novel to think that the entirety of written legal law could be pushed into a legal BlockChain Contract service. That it might use its software to reference the relevant law and return a result of "level of adherence". The service could then push the new contract into the chain(Or have already done so for validation) and ask for a finalisation, a "Tick" of approval from both parties.
      I believe the place you are talking about, where everything could be posted and nothing was ever peer reviewed for legitimacy was 4-Chan, or perhaps a 4-Chan like clone hanging off of the Tor network. This is not that network.
      @Stefano Papaleo. Stop making these judgements. You ARE an important person. You are important for what you can do, and will do, and have done to help those around you. You are important for all the changes you will make that improve your world, and the ones you share it with. You may express these opinions with these strong feelings, and it may feel as though you have thrust forward with your sword, but these views leave you impotent in my eyes. Use those feeling to fire you on, be open minded and passionate at the same time, and go deeper/discover more about these subjects that grip you to feel this way.

    Yeah of course and why not a banana-blockchain?
    I'm not sure that blockchain can be put in every fucking thing, maybe I'm not seeing the bigger picture and I'm wrong, but, to me blockchain makes sense only for a few applications. An example can be: make easier trade, giving guarantees to both parties.
    A blockchain Wikipedia is such a bad idea to me, and all the features of it can be achieved creating a site where you sign in giving your data like where are you from...

    It is funny how institutions are desperately trying to dissociate blockchains and cryptocurrencies. A blockchain is more secure with more nodes on the network. People need incentives to run nodes to validate transactions and keep the network decentralized by making a 51 percent attack computationally expensive. There is a game theory at play here. The "private" blockchains that banks and other institutions are building are not blockchain but a slightly altered version of a distributed database with worst transaction time.

      Pretty much accurate except it's the mining that needs to be incentiveized to protect form attack, not node operation. But yeah, blockchain by itself is useless. Two full years after we started hearing 'blockchain is the real innovation' there still isn't a single project that uses 'blockchain' without a token (or coin) incentivizing the system. In fact, now in late 2019, its very very rare to hearing anyone repeating this 'muh blockchain without crypto-currency' idea.

    Answer these questions to see if project really benefits by using blockchain:
    - does data need to be immutable?
    - do we need trust-less distributed database?
    Also, I highly question all the projects where user data is stored on block chain because of GDPR.

Big multinational companies, in particular those related to finance, mainly will benefit of block chain, alllow them less and less tranasparency in transactions, and authororities less and less power of supervision and control of criminal activities. Ask yourself why Dubai is the first to embrace this...?
    Another negative aspect is the loss of a huge amount of jobs, cutting the middle man, means that, so, yes it's true if you are a businessman you can have finally your opportunity, but for the majority of earth population, having an employment, due also the direction of automatization, will be extremely difficult, most of people will end up working for big multinationals.

So the transaction will go. But to be more safe we (dark net community) have bitcoin mixer, or etherium mixer (dosent matter) its a money (bitcoin) laundering machine that dose like the name says. Centralized: Requires trusted party to hold data. Decentralized: Trusted party isn't required. Enormous electricity is consumed, all data is duplicated on each node requiring a factor of storage space for each miner. If the database is 100GB and there are 10,000 miners, we now need 100GB*10,000 in storage. If a ledger activity requires 60W, we now need 10,000*60W of electricity to perform the activity. A centralized system only requires 100GB and 60W. Can someone explain to me how this is necessarily better? Decentralized is FAR less efficient than centralized despite maybe being more trustworthy. It's also vulnerable to quantum computing hackers, 51% attacks by mining farms, and individual nodes have no power against large mining pools. Government computer systems and electric consumption far outweighs any node in his Mom's basement. So the system becomes centralized anyway. Out of all the blockchain prophets out there, none of them have convinced me on why this is one of the most important inventions in human history. Try to explain it to me from a technological standpoint.

      Haiku Metzger once i thought of it like an accounting system that instantly updates and is sent to thousands of people periodically it made more sense to me. That's the decentralized aspect anyway. Also the ledger can't be hacked because you would basically have to hack computer simultaneously who has a copy of the ledger, typically thousands or millions of computers

      Not really. You must understand first how is that Blockchain actually works. Remember it is a DECENTRALIZED system; it has a "logo" and sort of a "brand name" or something, but they are projects that are OPEN SOURCE (just like the internet itself), so everyone can participate and collaborate in whatever the projects needs to be successful (including marketing). Developers and investors, basically HODL (take a look at that ;) the cryptocurrency (coin) related to the project, in which is basically reflected the valued of the project itself (just like the price of a company's stock). Thus they believe the project will become succesful as many people will create demand for the coin as it is useful (e.g Bitcoin is better than using a bank for international transactions) and therfore making the price going up. "The higher the demand, higher the price" Basic economic principle. Well I hope this helps everyone understand a liltle bit more about the topic.

      FYI: I am a Software Engineer and have deployed few Dapps in EVM.
      Firstly, in order to for you to build a system it involves many components including but not limited to Client (iOS Android), API Server (Component that your client can talk to) Your Database and the Dapp (Smart contract).
      A Smart contract is only a component of the system which is decentralised everything else is not.
      An organization does not open source all its components. even if it does the organization has full control of the pull request it can accept.
      Smart contracts are not like-real world contracts. Smart contracts can always be updated without you ever knowing it. (Just google it)
      in conclusion.
      Blockchain is a solution that is looking for a problem.

      @Nitin Muthyala -- If you are a Software Engineer, then you should be taking a closer look at Hashgraph. The way blockchain is designed, many flaws will never be fixed, so they came up with a solution to this 10 years problem.

      Where did you get that? Decentralized databases is actually pretty much the core of the concept. You are software engineer but it seems Blockchain is not your field.

      Scalability is the biggest driver of this technology's development. The challenge of decentralizing the state of a piece of data by distributing it among a network of computers, while also keeping the whole thing sufficiently responsive such that transactions require low work and occur quickly, while at the same time keeping the whole network's data safe is the big challenge. The reason it's a challenge, is because it's a hard problem to solve that's comparatively easy to solve in centralized networks.

    • @Supremax67

      @Jan Daniel Alcantra -- It is slow, very slow. None of the networks are Asyncronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant (which is the highest form of security) while remaining fast. But don't worry, that technology is just around the corner, and it addresses all the issues of blockchain.
      As for the 51 percent attack is not a thing, between attacking 1/3 of the network and setting up a firewall, you can disrupt the entire blockchain network. Anyone who talks about the 51% attack has no clue how it works.

    Blockchain technology is only revolutionary when it's truly decentralized and open source. If that's not the case, then any application of blockchain technology can only be described as a really poor choice of database. The true revolution here, is that open source blockchain projects hold the promise of delivering truly decentralized protocols and platforms, which cannot be censored or controlled. This is huge!

    I would like to know more technical details on how it's gonna work. For example, the blockchain wikipedia. Will all the articles be distributed among all the users and there will be no centralized server? So that's why it's so special? If this is how it's gonna work then, I see a problem of storing this data on individuals' computers the same as storing a history of all the bitcoin operations. But maybe I don't understand it correctly.

    • @billnorthup
      @billnorthup 6 років тому

      As a user you'll just access the data as you do Wikipedia or any website. The only computers the whole blockchain is distributed to are the people running the nodes, which could be you if you're up to the task.

    • @lukejagodzinski
      @lukejagodzinski 6 років тому

      I'm a programmer and some time ago I've tried creating a website using blockchain and experience wasn't so great. So blockchain Wikipedia will work similarly and I'm curious how many data will be stored on individual nodes and if people are willing to store such data. I assume that there won't be so many people. You can look at it in a similar way how torrents work. If a file is very old then there is little chance of having any seeds. Maybe I'm wrong but I think that for 99% services there will always be a need for the central server.

    oh lord, who believes in his BS hype. The concepts of ledger systems, temporal databases and distributed systems are old. The current techniques for blockchain used in bitcoin and ethereum don't scale. There's serious technical challenges that haven't been solved. There are newer frameworks trying to fix those architectural limitations, but they aren't proven. The biggest flaw of current approach to blockchain is they're too computationally heavy. The newer approaches claim they solve some of these issues, but they haven't proven themselves. The claimed of privacy and anonymity are stupid for several reasons. A full proof anonymous system will make money laundering trivial and therefore benefit organized criminals more than the average person. Organized crime can be the Russian Mafia or JPM Chase. So yeah, we need to make it easier for them to screw the rest of us. I worked in financial industry for several years on regulations. Many of those laws exist to protect the public from bad people and organizations. A truly anonymous system doesn't actually protect your privacy as long as some activity you do is publicly visible. To have 100% privacy, you'd have to move to the north pole, not buy anything with money or interact with people in public space. What people need isn't true privacy. What they want is for businesses to act ethically and abuse the data they collect. Blockchain might become more useful if the technical challenges are resolved. Until then, most of the hype is from people looking to make a quick buck from suckers.

      @A c -- Oh how ignorant you are, with their announcement of their Hedera Public network 1.0, the technology will be wide open and license free. Stop spreading FUD.
      @Christo -- Oh how ignorant you are, they been running a private version for the last 3 years successfully and in the middle of completing their public network which they have successfully tested. More than a dozen companies as partnered up with them for both versions.
      I own several crypto currency and I own nothing in terms of Hashgraph assets, so when you hear a guy like me give a positive feedback on their product, it's as unbiased as it can possibly get. Unlike you guys which probably owns crypto coins and would have much to lose if your currency would go down.
      Only reviews that can be fully trusted are the unbiased one. You speak ill on a project you are fully invested or you speak good about a project you don't own any shares or assets, anything else and it could be considered being BIAS.

      ShadowMaster 45 we supposedly live in a world where we backup claims with evidence, thus forming a logical opinion.
      Now we make claims based upon unreasonable scenarios and argue against logical outcomes with the premise “but it can happen, you cant deny there is a chance”.
      People of reason go by that which is more likely, and it is UNLIKELY to presuppose that any crypto or blockchain to date has come close to the secure properties of bitcoin. A blockchain is defined predominantly by its secure decentralised nature, which cannot be attributed to any private network, unless by private you mean to suggest networks like the lightning network which many assume to be a private side chain- when in-fact is a remarkable decentralised innovation built on-top of the bitcoins SECURE protocol.
