I'm a life long hiker. I grew up in the American outback, the desert southwest. I always hiked to school when I was a kid. I'm 45 now and I don't own a car, I hike everywhere I go. I've been developing a route through the county I live in, a hundred miles of high desert canyons. I'll be hiking the full route for the first time this year. I'm super stoked about it. Here's to a great year of hiking adventures for all!
Thanks for this. Your quote “Like life, success often comes down to one simple principle. Keep moving forward step by step.”, is awesome. Happy New Year
I love the planning too. It gives me so much to look forward to. Another UA-camr talked about practicing how not to quit. He was referring to thru hiking and training in bad conditions, but it made sense. Sometimes experiences suck, but they make the best memories. :)
Hey I’ll be walking out on the Overland track in two weeks with my 11yr old. I’ve been planning for this for about 15months! I’m nervous and excited at the same time 😊
I can’t wait to go back to Tasmania in Autumn to do small distances hikes before i do the big hikes. Your videos really helping me and yes, going for a hike is really reshaping our life. It has been two years since i started going for a little hikes with my little family and this busy life is really not excuses for us not to go hiking. Thank you so much for the tips .
I'll be hiking and backpacking more and smarter in 2025. Better gear, lighter gear, packing smarter and getting better prepared. I'm going to take full advantage of the beautiful country I live in.
Happy new year Mowser - the hardest thing to do in life often is just starting because we’re scared of failure but understanding that failure is needed to get wisdom
I have just started tramping again… with my toddler as a single mum! A complicated set of challenges but I am LOVING it. It’s blown the cobwebs away and has made me feel so confident and capable. I am starting small with easy overnight walks to doc huts (nz) and building strength carrying a pack and a child 😂 I’ve been really enjoying your videos to give me tips of things I haven’t thought of!
Not just for backpacking, these are wise words for life. I'm building a fintech startup and everything you mentioned about grit, resilience, determination, learning, all apply to life.
I'm recovering from an injury. My walking is very restricted at the moment but I hope to hit the trail later in the year. Thanks for the content. It keeps me motivated. :)
Many good points but nothing shows you what you're really made of until you do solo walking, again start off small with achievable results. When you learn to navigate confidently with whatever technology you choose and start to become confident that no matter what you will be able to find your way home again it will open up feelings of self worth you previously never new you had. In my opinion any challenges in life you have completed on your own carry much more satisfaction. Having said that you need to be comfotable to retreat and try again another day if something doesn't feel right and not feel like you failed. I have had plenty of second attempts after I had not done enough research for the first attempt.
It is extremely rare that I filter water in Tasmania. The only times I tend to are either when it's extremely dry and I am collecting from small pools OR when I'm in a heavy traffic area like the Cradle mountain daywalk area. When I do filter I use a Sawyer squeeze which is light and robust.
Another great video Mowser. This is gold and it's one I'll refer to again. Have you considered another video category on the mental or mind side of tramping/hiking? This one is under "general" and I'm surprised no one else seems to have viewed or commented on this one. Love your work across the ditch.
Use your vacation days. They're yours. Use them. Don't be guilted out of them. Plan day hikes. Bring a hammock, string it up, and hang out with a book for a few hours. Do an overnight if you have two consecutive days off. Hiking is amazingly easy to fit into a busy life. It doesn't need to be a huge expedition that would strain the logistical capabilities of the US military. It can just be a walk in the woods with a cup of coffee you made with your backpacking stove. However much you're able to enjoy nature is better than not at all.
At a point in my life where I was working an awful lot I would find time especially during summer to take a ‘quick overnighted’- 1hr drive, do a walk in (often to a nice little mountain), camp, wake early and walk out and drive straight back to work. Was a treat way to get a quick hiking fix. Also planning well in advance and having a hike to look forward to helps. We soften plan a year out.

It's amazing how applicable these principles are to so many areas of life!
So nicely elaborated man! Your content is always appreciated! Love your work!

Great positive information, not just for hiking but for life in general. ❤
I appreciate you saying that. I hope it helps people make more time for nature in their lives! 😊

Great video and I love the advice of the first 4 min. I recommend checking out the book, The Comfort Crisis. Keep up the posting, awesome.
I'll have to check that book out - thanks for the recommendation!

You have the right of it...cheers

Please make a video on what water filter you use on multi day trips in Tassie

This one isn’t due to go live for a couple of weeks so not sure how you saw it early but thanks for watching 😂
@@mowsertas I was so confused video published 24 mins ago but a 2 week old comment
@mowsertas I have magic UA-cam powers I didn't know I have. 😂
It explains why there were no other comments.
Any tips how to balance a corporate 9-5 with hiking? Im having a hard time finding a good balance.

Try Alastair Humphreys' book Microadventure.

Unfortunately ... you always have to come back.
