How To Pack A Hiking Backpack (Like A Pro)
@mowsertas for hiking in Tasmania do you use a footprint? On your slingfin? Or when you had the Allak would you bother with a footprint with a hilleberg floor in Tasmania? Or overkill? Cheers!
cool
Does it have ECG?
No
Thanks for the good video. One small addition: It's indeed called box breathing, because you also pause for 4 counts after you breathe out. (4 counts breathe in, 4 counts hold, 4 counts breathe out, 4 counts hold...and repeat).
Wear your hiking socks especially if you use 2 pairs of socks when trying on your hiking shoes.
Whats your oppinion on army fleece jackets. The one in my mind is made by helikon-tex.
My money is on the Jetboil heat exchanger being the major factor in the gas consumption difference. To even out the experiment at home perhaps you should have tried the windmaster with a heat exchanger pot.
Great video, thanks! Kiwi Nana tramper here. 😊
Thanks!
A massive 12.87kg base weight and you are trying to claim that you are using lightweight gear??? My base weight is just over 3kg, and that is with every conceivable comfort including the weight of my comfy Helinox Chair Zero thrown in! I guess they don't have ultralight gear down under yet?
Very helpful and essential counsel, Thank You.
❤❤❤❤ have a good day!
we hiked in rhe rain one time😊
For me Naturehike mongar 2 fits 2 people perfectly
No opinion on the Arc’teryx Proton. Have you tried it?
No, I haven't tried out the Proton.
@@mowsertas Fair enough. I'm leaning towards it over the Atom due to purported increased breathability.
Merino wool layers and light sport shirts are awesome. Wicking shirts are great and then the natural Merino Wool taking the odours out can’t be beaten. Ice Breaker Merino is your best friend and cheap Nike shirts.
I purchased and compared 5 midlayer jackets recently. I picked up the Arcteryx Atom, the Arcteryx Delta, the Patagonia Nano Air Light Hybrid, the Patagonia R1 TechFace, and the North Face Summit FutureFleece full zip hoodie. First impressions seemed to favor the Arcteryx Atom, and I thought it was game over pretty quickly, because the fit is just superb for a shorter, broad-shouldered guy like me. But after tons of trying them on and wearing them outside, and thinking about what I want in a true midlayer, I think the winner for me is the North Face FutureFleece. I find the Patagonias too long in length and arms when the shoulders and chest are comfortable for me in the Large size, and I find the Arcteryx (despite its seriously perfect fit on me) to feel more like a casual jacket that does a great job of windproofing and being more of an insulating layer rather than being a true hiking midlayer. My midlayer of choice will go over Smartwool merino, either an all-season longsleeve t-shirt or a thermal base layer. The Delta felt like it belonged in North Florida 55 degree weather, not the cold and windy California mountains. The R1 TechFace's outer layer seems awesome for walking through abrasive brush, and I loved the stretch, but it too was long and square on me, and big down at the waist, so all that stretch was pointless if it was going to be so airy down at the waist. The Nano Air Light Hybrid could well have been the winner here, it was comfy, and would probably do well to about 10 degrees less than the FutureFleece, and almost as protective of the cold as the Atom, but the FutureFleece fit closer to the body and seemed to move and stretch quietly with the body's movement, and I preferred that to the way the Nano ALH or Atom did. Maybe a size medium in the Nano ALH jacket (non-hoodie version) may be the ticket - I may still order one in Medium to compare to the FutureFleece. The Arcteryx Atom was the loudest during movement, and did not seem like it would handle abrasion well (even the Delta seemed like it could handle it better than the Atom), and the Nano Air Light Hybrid only a little better than the Atom. I liked how the FutureFleece fit as nicely as the Atom (in the sense that it fit shorter on my short frame), while staying relatively warm, stretched with movement, and stayed very quiet. While cost was not a factor for me, it could be for some, and the FutureFleece is the 2nd least expensive on this list after the R1 Techface. The FutureFleece did not have hand pockets, but I'm okay with that as I have hip belt pockets on the backpack and pockets on the pants. When I'm hiking, my hands are on the trekking poles, not in my pockets.
That's a great detailed review! I'm a big fan of the future fleece. I think i'll get another at some stage.
@ I would actually prefer the non-hoodie version of the FutureFleece, but for some reason North Face opted to provide less warmth material on the non-hoodie version (100gm on the non-hoodie vs 124 gm in the hoodie). If it was the same exact jacket minus the hoodie, I'd switch out, as I don't see a need for a hoodie on a midlayer. That to me is the job of the insulating layer. I have a beanie and neck gaiter in the backpack should I need a little warmth in the noggin.
Any guidance for sizing? Size up a size if you are wearing a liner as gloves are a bit small. Adventure Alan usually wears a medium and bought a large size.
Yep definitely size up. I sized up 2 x sizes and fits nicely
Great video, love your channel!
Thanks so much!
Thank you very much for these tips i confirm in my (also 35 years of hiking experience) ! However, I do now add a light solar panel on my rucksack to recharge my powerbank. Very helpful, expecially since my telephone is my camera !
Thank you! Good tips.
Sleeping in a shelter on a thin foam pad is hard if you're a normal person; I tried it while being almost underweight and I became acutely aware of every bone in my body; 0/10 would not recommend 😂 But it's a fun thing to laugh at in hindsight, so there's that 😂
Yep, not much fun!
Watched a couple of your vids and find some really helpful tips. I always feel guilty for stopping but just done a 2 day hike and stopped frequently for lots of quick breaks and it was great!
That’s a great approach! Recovery is key!
Very useful vid Mowser. Not that many you tube hikers go into nutrition and the importance of good sleep, especially when your body is 60 and its brain is 23. (Me) 😎 Nec Aspera Terrent- Clive.
I hear you Clive! Thanks!
FLEECE is a poor clothing layer. Cozy to wear, but not a practical outer layer in weather. When hiking a mountain ridge in New York state, USA, on a winter day, the air was filled with moisture, a few drops of rain, but not consistently. My fleece jacket absorbed the moisture The additional moisture weight resulted in loss of freedom of motion as well and forced me to leave the mountain. The potential for hypothermia was evident. Beyond the moisture and weight factors is the fact that wind penetrates fleece causing temperature reduction and lack of concentration. Should you wear a wind or rain jacket over the fleece, you body moisture will build-up in the fleece but not as much as I experienced on the weather on the mountain. These days for a 36 plus/minus Fahrenheit hiking day, I wear my DIY heat reflective Anorak that returns my own body heat back to me, breathable, wind and water repellent/proofed over my zip turtleneck polypropylene base layer, with a third layer of a wool sweater. Should it rain, I simply switch my Anorak with my sweater, providing rain or snow protection. The Anorak weighs a mere 3.7 ounces and provides excellent freedom of motion.
Mate, great technical breakdown of what fleece is at the beginning. Love that kind of detail.
Glad you liked it!
What’s the deal with all the bone broth powder I’ve been seeing? Is it helpful? If so, how?
From Google - “Bone broth (powder) provides a myriad of health benefits - Collagen booster, gut health supplement, amino acid enricher, bone and muscle strength, weight management and hydration” personally I prefer electrolyte drinks and meal/protein shakes. 😎
Yep collagen and a bit of protein too!
Hi Mowser, Thanks for this video. It has helped immensely with my trip planning. Here's a question ... at 24:11 in the video, you suddenly have a large elevation profile below the map. How did you get that set-up?!? I am so frustrated with the teeny profile on the side bar. Many thanks. Martha
I believe you only get the profile on the bottom like that when you are creating a new route within the app. For any existing routes it shows it smaller on the side. When in an existing route you can choose the option 'open details' to open the route in a separate window. This will then show elevation profile below. Not as good as when creating a route but a bit of an improvement. I might put in an enhancement request for this!

I use a 0 degree (F) Enlightened equipment quilt. I don’t remember the model but it’s with sewn footbox. On the ground it gets annoying to keep out drafts once I’m below 20 degrees, but in my hammock it’s great. I think if I were doing a long trip in cold weather where I couldn’t hammock I’d bring a sleeping bag instead.
Yeah, it’s definitely tough to stay warm on the ground when it’s cold.
Fantastic video. I agree, the correct recovery is the only way to enjoy the multi day hikes.
Sure is. Thanks!
Good
Thanks
Great advice mate on nutrition on the go
Absolutely
having watched alot of 'Alone' series I noted that they all said go 'fatter' and that idea resonated with me :P
Hello from switzerland, I‘m really grateful to have found your channel. I really struggled with anxiety in the past and just now picked up hiking in the rain as a stress relive and something that helps me build mental resilience, im currently stocking up on decent gear and wonder what makes a hood gaieter and if you could recommend any)
Glad you're finding rain hiking helpful! Do you mean 'what makes a good gaiter'? as in gaiters for the legs? Lately I use the Rab Muztag Goretex pro gaiters and love them.
Absolutely fantastic topic and you presented it so professionally man! Brilliant job
Really glad you liked it!
Great video! Great channel! I have one question, why so few subscribers?
Thanks! Working on it!
@ 💪🏼👍🏼🫡
It's a true mystery. I've recommended this channel to people looking for beginners advice, I think he has such a great way of explaining everything and even though some things are brought up in several videos it doesn't feel like he's just repeating himself. It's weird that he doesn't have more followers
Great video! Recovery is essential!
Thanks, it’s definitely the key to future adventures!
At 60, I completed, but did not do well food-wise on my CA Sierra thru hike. Though I taste tested all of my foods and was familiar with 5 dayish carries, this was another level for me. Processed foods no longer agree with me so that was a challenge. My tastes changed while on trail and anything sweet like a salted caramel chocolate high protein bar, which I loved, was disgusting. Bars I thought I would eat for bfast were basically frozen until the afternoon. Coffee or other hot prepared items tended to become a waste of precious trail time so I skipped. I would come into camp too exhausted to have an appetite, etc., etc. I completed the trail, but I realized if I were to consider anything longer or harder, I’d have to take a good look at my food issues from this experience.
It’s tough to figure out food on a thru-hike. It sounds like you have some great takeaways though!
Sleeping bags and quilts temperatures are based on an R rating of 4, if you use anything less you can make even the best bags cold on a bad mat.
Great point!
It’s the multi day hikes where this becomes critical because any deficiencies rapidly become exponentially bad. I have to admit to learning this the hard way.
Me too! I hiked the JMT, CA Sierra last summer at 60 and had everything dialed in including my food. That’s where I failed. I completed the hike, but I look back and wondered wow, how?
Bang on. Now if we could only get access to a sub $1000 freeze dryer!
Yeah, that would be a game changer!
Great stuff. Thanks.
You're welcome! Glad you found it useful.
Great video 👍
Thanks 👍
Hydration - The body loses water faster than it can absorb. If you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.
Another great video. 👍 We are doing the Overland in the first week of May over 5 days. Do you know how the Hyperlite South West compares to the Porter?
I have a Hyperlite Southwest aswell and love it. I use it on shorter trips. You probably wouldn't want to carry much more than 15-17kg absolute max with the southwest. I really notice it when it's overloaded. The Porter is much more comfortable at bigger weights. I love the southwest's external pockets

I feel like Alpha Direct is essentially Polartec in Patagonia R1 flipped inside out. Quick and dirty method of getting “Alpha Direct” is to flip my R1 inside out and wear it. Lol
Interesting observation! They certainly feel and look very similar!
