Imagining an Economy Where You Don't Have to Buy Anything | Solving Plastic

  • What if we didn't have to spend any money on the things we need, and could instead get them from our neighbors and build a stronger community in the process? When Liesl Clark and Rebecca Rockefeller started the Buy Nothing Project, that's what they set out to create. With hundreds of groups around the world now, the infrastructure of Buy Nothing could transform our economy into one where resources are cycled rather than wasted.

Nextdoor app in our community does a similar thing. I needed hangers because I was doing laundry for someone in the hospital and neighbors came up with plenty. I was surprised by the generosity. I didn’t have to buy new ones.

I like the concept of USSR when somewhere in 70's most of the food was sold in paper packaging. Milk, sour cream were sold either in glass bottles or were sold 'by weight' which means you bring your own bottle or tank to buy how much you need. And that's what I call eco friendly! Packaging is both highly reusable and much easier to recycle compared to plastic. Yet we're living in globaliztion when everything is designed to be cheap it's hard to see that concept back..

Imagine the concept of the USSR where you can't travel to foreign countries because government does not allow unless you are famous and rich. Imagine waiting 20 years in line to buy a car and 10 years to wait to install a telephone line. Imagine standing in line just to buy bananas, line up for 2 to 4 hours just to find out the government run store have run out of bananas and the next supply will be next year. How nice to be living in the USSR. Paper packaging is nice to have, but it was the times when plastic was not invented yet. As soon as Tetrapak was invented years later USSR had milk stored in those leaking containers. Imagine you bring home just half contents of milk since it leaks on its way home.

I am sympathetic to this concept, but it is ignoring the fact that we still need some production, because things are not infinitely reuseable or recyclable, unless some human production happens (even if it's shearing sheep or feeding animals). The question is how to shift production towards the local community, away from mass production factories.

Hmmm, I think this is a cool idea! Congratulations you too on the success you had with your community and in many communities of the world. Of course it’s not perfect, but that’s not the point. The point is that it is a blessing in many many want ways. In the community it brings power through connection and trust with each other and the environment. And these efforts are transitioning towards a cleaner, healing, and more peaceful way of living, and sending the message that we are committed to it.

Imagine being so wealthy that you live on an island and you have sooo much stuff that you can gift it away to others.
This only works if you prime the "economy" with a whole bunch of stuff to begin with.
I would be more impressed if they started with nothing and then built a community from that. But that's not as glamorous or romantic is it?

Spot on. And even then, they keep getting new stuff from factories. They are pretending that they don't need to produce anything, externalizing the production to the factories. We need to figure out how to produce things in ways that discourage perverse incentives that benefit individuals or large corporations in the short run, but hurt everyone in the long run.

I am all for responsibility. I am not for shutting down the economy for the sake of the environment. Those with trust funds have no idea what life is like for the plebians or slaves. They imagine their lofty ideals are suitable for guiding Our World. They assume their knowledge sufficient above the many and innate Kaos. What do I know?
