Hi! I'm an undergraduate researcher at UMass currently studying the effects of microplastics in soil and in our waste management systems! I'm writing up a report and wanted some inspiration to get me started, and this was a wonderful video! The experiment I just ran was looking at the size and number of microplastics in soil and how that would impact lettuce growth and the soil rhizospheres and such. It definitely had a large impact, which was expected, however because there is so little research, as you said, we have to do these basic experiments to show it because they've never been done before. Of course, this was with pristine plastics (as we'd have to degrade our own plastics, which is a very difficult thing to do- we recently found a way to do it but it's not perfect by any means. Only a few small change in the structure of the plastic) so we're going to run it again with degraded plastics if we're able to. Personally, I believe that there is no avoiding plastics at this point and I hope to do more research on the chemically damaging aspects of microplastics in our own bodies. Microplastics are toxic (at certain levels, as is any pollutant) but no one really knows what it does to our bodies. Of course, this research would require another few organic chemistry classes (the bane of my existence) but it'll be worth it for science. Love your content!

In water, hydrophobic molecules tend to stick together. Most plastics are hydrophobic so they can potentially accumulate hydrophobic toxins. If this gets into the body and into our tissue, I wonder what kind of effect this would have. Especially if hormone mimicking compounds gets into our system.

You mention needing the minerals in water that distilled water doesn't have, the issue with this is that you don't need those minerals because they are 'inorganic' to the body. Though the body requires these minerals, it comes down to the form they take, to be of use, so to say. For example you want the sodium that comes naturally from an avocado vs the sodium that is rubbing off from rocks and whatever else. It's the same reason why you can take a multivitamin and piss out 95% of it every time.
I can't go to such extreme because alot of stuff is vital for us except avocados and bananas. You can't live of those i still appreciate your effort because that little effort you made can change the world
Okay but you didn't have to look through every piece of salt individually; put your salt in distilled water, wait until it dissolves, strain it through something really fine, boil the salt water until the water evaporates and boom, salt. It would work right?
Two most effective things I was told elsewhere: - Drink tap water (if it’s recommended where you live) - Con’t cut food on plastic Who has another low hanging plastic fruit?

The cited study specifically talks about the effect of microplastics in the lung (they are proinflammatory). It does not talk about ingestion of microplastics. Not saying it couldn't be bad for you, but your sources are insufficient. Also, since most people think about plastics as "nasty chemicals" I think it's important to note the fact that the reason microplastics cause a proinflammatory response in the lung is because they are unreactive, and can thus maintain small particle sizes with high surface area, effectively acting as catalysts. Not because they are dangerous chemicals that react with things.
I heard somewhere that plastics (particularly certain kinds) affects hormones in the body. I'm not an expert, so can't say with certainty, but this could possibly explain some anomalies we see in behaviors outside traditional social norms, if you get my drift. just saying, it could be a possibility and I wouldn't be surprised if it was an explanation.

Hey, where is that place? It looks a little like where I live actually. Not exactly, too nice weather lol.
I can't go to such extreme because alot of stuff is vital for us except avocados and bananas. You can't live of those i still appreciate your effort because that little effort you made can change the world
funny to see this now that they found micro plastic in human blood
Okay but you didn't have to look through every piece of salt individually; put your salt in distilled water, wait until it dissolves, strain it through something really fine, boil the salt water until the water evaporates and boom, salt. It would work right?
Two most effective things I was told elsewhere:
- Drink tap water (if it’s recommended where you live)
- Con’t cut food on plastic
Who has another low hanging plastic fruit?
Don't microwave your food in plastic.
@@Coccinelf I keep telling my wife this. Doesn't seem to sink in.
@@mozkitolife5437 maybe it's time to buy new microwavable storage containers so she has the convenience of microwaving leftovers in glass? I dunno, just an idea.
@@amyrlin026 Good idea, but that requires taking the food out of the plastic packaging and into another container. Too inconvenient for her.
@Coccinelle Thanks, I’m already following this, but good one. 👌🏻
1) I stopped consuming carbonated drinks 12 years ago.
2) Glass bottles came into my life 4 years ago.
3)Solar water heating system placed in my house 6years ago.
4)Completely stopped using non-stick utensils this year itself.
BONUS POINT -In INDIA , the plastic wrapping of all vegetables is not prevalent.Barring few exceptions in Supermarkets and some Malls .
Thank Goodness for that🙏

"And have my poo analysed"...
Ah, the wonders of science!
Lab report: Affirmative. This is definitely poo.
"Video number 2" - I see what you did there
In the air.... that's a shock!! That house Is goals, btw.
I heard somewhere that plastics (particularly certain kinds) affects hormones in the body. I'm not an expert, so can't say with certainty, but this could possibly explain some anomalies we see in behaviors outside traditional social norms, if you get my drift. just saying, it could be a possibility and I wouldn't be surprised if it was an explanation.
it shldnt be this hard for the kids ,,but it is,and its time for the parents to stand up
Governments: lets ban straws
No one: hey coca-cola and Poland springs, this has got to stop
Neeko Z
Can you explain this comment?
It’s already ban in Seattle Washington.
I'm pretty sure that person meant stop bottling everything in plastic
kash bash some cities have banned straws and single use plastic bags. Which is great. But much more needs to be banned such as Coca Cola in plastic bottles and single use water bottles.
you are so awesome. i wish i have your lifestyle. thanks for the info and btw, you intro background is awesome too.
*Had plastic sunglasses on his face half the time*
We should switch back to hemp instead of big business oil plastic
No you weren't crazy because now its headline news.
I love your channel.. I don’t want to sound bad but I really wish your channel remains like this, unpopular, simple, unexplored..
I would like to at the same time wish you a lot of success and growth!
everyone: if you drink a glass of distilled water you‘re gonna die instantly
kurtis: I‘ll be okay for a day
It's a salt thing
I drink exclusivly distilled water for years and i am very alive lol
Distilled water is fine, the minerals you may get from non-distilled water are very few and inorganic anyway. Minerals from food makes much more sense.
@@monsimix6839 I assume you also eat salted food and probably some quite natural (not premade grocery store garbage) foods
Wouldnt you be breathing Plastic from your sunglasses and part of your shoelaces, Clothing, Microscope, appliances, paper towel on the counter behind you, patio furniture, clock on the wall, Etc..
This is pretty interesting!
Over 10% of Americans don't know that plastic is made from oil. Most people don't know what oil is.
And that's all I'm going to type right now.
