    I have been held captive by an umbrella cockatoo for at least 12 years now. I am usually happily held captive. Sometimes he is a bit loud-usually waiting for a crucial time during a tv show. He is so friendly and in no way has been influenced by my own anti-social behavior and my preference for no other humans around. He talks to my cat and other pets and greets them when they meet. Any stranger or serial killer who knocks at the door is greeted by a loud friendly 'Hello' His 'beak of iron strength' has destroyed metal dishes and cage bars, so far, he has never had to reprimand me with his beak as I show him proper respect at all times. He has trained me well. Cockatoos are not for everyone, but so far, my captor and I seem to be happy and healthy. Did you know that most umbrellas are left footed? btw I love him dearly. (Could be Stockholm syndrome.)

    I've been around moluccan cockatoos for upwards of 30 years. The one thing I noticed is you cannot be frightened of them, they will take advantage of that. At present I have six of them. Two females, Dolly and Pumpkin, that would never even consider biting me. One other female, April, gives me a pinch occasionally but it's only if I'm not paying enough attention. I have one small male, Marin, that used to be a bit aggressive but now that he's approaching 30 years old he's settled down. Two other 15-year-old males, Louie and huckleberry, we're passed around to different homes over the years because they were a bit aggressive but now that they've become part of our family they are just the most wonderful sweethearts. Cockatoos are awesome. Oh, and it will be a much happier experience if you're handy at finish carpentry.

    I really, really love cockatoos - the more problematic I hear they are the more I want one as a house mate because I'm an idiot. I'd love the challenge of taking one on that is unwanted one day when I have the space, in the knowledge that it might think I smell and dislike me immediately.

    • @danven1256

      Just remember if you get one, never give up and never get angry. Turn your back on them and they will rip a piece off of your beautiful oak furniture, pull all the keys off of your computer keyboard, turn on the bathroom faucet and flood the floor. You just have to accept the fact that that's what they do. They change your life in ways that you won't even comprehend right now. But in my view it's worth it.

    I would love a goffin some day, but that’s as far as I’d go with cockatoo’s. Not because they’re any less difficult, just because of their size. I’d feel uncomfortable keeping anything bigger than that, or maybe a small grey/Amazon with my current birds. Especially since my green cheek is prone to picking fights lol. My aunt has a Moluccan and I’m glad she’s not mine, seeing her every few months for an hour or two is plenty for me.

    I remember months ago on UA-cam listening to Jamie describe her feelings about Cockatoos - made them seem like soulless minions of Satan. Their unfeeling black eyes void of emotion making them impossible to read (like the Great White shark), and how you can feel the atmosphere in the room grow icy cold at any unpredictable moment you do something utterly harmless that they take random exception to 😆

    I have a neighbor that's 4 houses away from me that has a sulfur crested cockatoo. When she 1st got it, she would put the parrot on her covered porch for a couple hours daily for sun & freash air. I didn't know she had the parrot, but I do recall that suddenly, on a daily basis a sound came from her house which was identical to: a screaming cat that was being violently murdered! I went over to her home to find out what had happened. I discovered she had several large parrots (which her son had initially purchased for himself). I liked her immediately. she has a kind nature & I too have parrots. I can attest to the fact that "Sulfers" are among the VERY loudest of parrots, especially if they are upset about something like, for example; being left alone on the porch!!! :●}

This was in the 80's, and I brought him with me to work, didn't like to leave him all alone the whole day. He sat on my shoulder and I was terrified he should bite my ear off! I was really terrified of this guy and it was before internet - not as easy as today to look solutions up! Now I feel almost manic of getting myself some sort of parrot 😁

    I saw one of your videos for stubborn African grey and I think I need some help
    My grey is almost 23 years old and I've had him for about a year now,
    He's stubborn, like really stubborn, I've tried traing, target training, word training and he just won't learn.
    He has only ever stepped up once before and that was when I was first meeting him at the shelter, which the trainers said was a complete fluke
    He's pretty nice overall, he loves scritches and will talk, sing and dance with use but he won't step up, he bites anything that he doesn't like, which is everything. If your not carefully with a boop on the beak he'll bite, I use a sheet to cover him and pick him up to hold him because it's a system I've found to not stress him out too much even though he doesn't usually know what's going on at first. Id like some help to know what to do. It's technically my first bird, (personal pet) I have experience with some other birds as I used to run an aviary and managed not to get bitten by anything I'd hadnle except to a excitable turaco
    My grey always seems grouchy and he's gotten the nick name red butt, and hard head because he just won't learn anything we teach him
    My dad thinks sometimes he knows better and uses a gloves to force him to step up which causes him to scream and get super stressed, luckily I've stopped that from happening as much as possible
    If you could help me out that'd be awesome!

    bird store where I got my blue front amazon got in a citron cockatoo perfect feather not a screamer but incredibly shy/standoffish. the owner had the plan of don't force yourself on that particular bird, just make sure it sees you treat the other birds with respect and love. it took about 3 months of this approach that I walked into visit when the owner obviously stoked told me to visit with the citron went up to it's cage and it immediately stepped forward and fluffed it's head forward for a scratch. well the story has a happy ending with the citron being purchased by a woman who already owned a blue front that absolutely detested her husband and had pretty much caused him to set the demand of any more bird's will cause a divorce. comes home to another bird and is not happy. fast forward 1 week and wife comes home to the citron sitting on his knee shredding the newspaper while he reads it, the breakthrough came with the citron terrorising the maid while she tried to vacuum and trying to kill the vacuum. birds absolutely know how to wrap us humans around their little zygodacktyl claws

I made the mistake of bending down to clear the floor, WHAM, beak clamped on my bum, luckily it slid off and no damage. When he came to us he was 125 years old and had been living in a 65 x 45 x 45 cage for years so we think this may be the roots of his behaviour.

    It's so sad to see a captive cockatoo, complete with plucked feathers and probably clipped wings. Cockatoos belong in the wild, flying with a hundred of their mates, screeching as loud as can be, finding mates, raising chicks, raising hell. But most of all FLYING. Why is it that a creature who cannot fly on its own has this compulsion to lock birds in cages and prevent them from flying? It's like vindictive jealousy.
