    But Cher saying her maid is Mexican is meant to be a comment on her ignorance. Sure, its an outdated joke, but it's on her. Also, we're meant to dislike Elton because he's a pushy creep who is only nice until she turns him down. The entire point is that Cher is, well, clueless about his true nature, as she is about everything else. Way to skim the surface...

      @Melina Covi Omfg are you seriously comparing the two? Back then woman and men did not have the same rights, but guess what? Now they do! That was a mistake of the past and we as human being have now learned from it and are ready to move on.
      Now in order for us to learn from mistakes there must be one in the first place. Back then there clearly was a mistake ;people were not treated equally by law. It was injustice.
      But not they are.(At least in the majority of the world).
      That was a thing that could be counted as a major problem that effected everyone, the things people complain about now, when it comes to this movie, are not.

    What this video totally misses is that Clueless is a satire- also, Elton was portrayed in a bad light in this movie, and Cher calls him out for it. You were supposed to hate Elton for what he did, not condone it-I think that makes this movie a bit ahead of its time in this regard.

    • @whitneyhoustonstan2472
      @whitneyhoustonstan2472 6 років тому +49

      mackenzie pfeifer exactly what I was going to say. The movie was purposely stereotypical. The stereotypical female, always worrying about her weight and her food intake. They targeted these problems by exposing how ridiculous they are. Thus, this made the movie funny!

      Exactly! Plus its based on Jane Austen's novel 'Emma' in which Mr. Elton is too forward with Emma in the carriage home from a ball, making her confused and uncomfortable - they modernised his actions very effectively while staying true to the story

    • @kellynn739
      @kellynn739 6 років тому +17

      Agreed! This was ahead of it's time with "no means no." Elton basically accuses her of "leading him on" and Cher's response is aptly, "As if!" Elton is a douche and we see it that way.

    • @krautgazer

    It was a movie about being superficial/stereotypes and how the main character evolved. Dion wasn't a meek gf that never stood up for herself, they didn't fat shame Ty for not being a stick, dude was gay and apparently everyone but Cher knew it yet they didn't treat him any differently. Saw this with friends for my 13th birthday and the only weird thing we took away from it was that she ends up with her ex-stepbrother .

    Stereotypes? Again, this is how people view them in High School. Aaaand again, a 90s comedy. Pointing out there ethnicity? But but they're Iranian ... the maid is to show how clueless the rich can be about other ethnicities.
    Sensitivity Training? Yeah Elton is an a**, but he stopped eventually when he got the sign.

    Dionne and Murray's relationship wasn't toxic. The whole point of their relationship was that on the outside they looked to be toxic and looked like they didn't care but in reality they love and care deeply about eachoter. This is shown in e.x the car scene when they're comforting eachoter in a near moment of death. It's also shown by the fact of how close Dionne and Murray's mother is, oh and let's not forget the "Sorry miss Dionne" moment.
    Not only that, but remember how Cher litterally CONFIRMES Dionne's and Murray's closeness in a scene in the second half of the movie.

    "Problematic behavior" mentioned in this movie is relating to the times, topics that were common ground in the 90s. Josh in the movie is the voice of the "woke" college-educated person. For example. Cher is "CLUELESS" in how to deal with Lucy, and Josh INFORMS her. This youtube video takes many elements out of context. Cher represents what we would call today "not woke" and "basic," hence Clueless. The film depicts the characters, especially Cher, as "learning," just as all adolescents do.

    I never thought I'd want to go back to the 90s, but this video made me want to return. Anything to get out of this stupid, Puritanical, moral panic phase we're all enduring. Clueless is a satire. I get where this video is coming from, but the movie is literally called "Clueless' - as in, most of the characters are clueless about certain things. Cher, being the main character, is clueless about a lot of things - international politics, the ethnicity of her father's staff, the sexuality of Christian. It's meant to be satire and comedy. It's not meant to be mean-spirited.

    • @nerissarowan8119
      @nerissarowan8119 Місяць тому +1

      This exactly. The whole point of Christian being the perfect stereotype is to highlight Cher’s cluelessness. Despite everything she doesn’t realise he’s gay, because she lets her desire to have a hot boyfriend get in the way of actual logic and really seeing who is in front of her. It’s only later when she gets over being smitten that she gets to know who he really is, and what he’s good at. Which is kind of parallel to her journey with other characters - Elton who she superficially thinks is great because he’s popular when in reality he is a creep, her teachers who she begins to see as real people, and Josh. Not sure she got there with the maid, it’s been a while since I watched the whole movie.

The narrator has conveniently forgot to mention the part where Cher is reflecting on all the good things about Deons relationship and that Deons boyfriend is putting on an act and that fact that Deon doesn’t just stand there and take it but often puts him in his place and shows what strong intelligent girl should do. I’d recommend a teenaged girl watch this movie over any of the horrible crap supposedly geared towards girls today.

    Uh. These aren’t problems. It’s a movie, an exaggerated reflection of our reality and in the 90s the way these characters spoke and acted was reality.
    It’s a comedy based on the 90s
    Calm down it’s not problematic, you’re just too young to know the difference between a movie and reality.

    The idea of the gay stereotypes in Christians character is that it was supposed to be so obviously gay that anyone should see it, but Cher still thinks he’s into her. It’s meant to showcase her - for lack of a better term - cluelessness.

    Seriously...? They dfidn't call it "Politically Aware Teenagers" or "Socially Sensitive High Schoolers" (what a bore that would be). The movie is called "Clueless" for a reason. The whole point is that Cher's world is self-enclosed and oblivious to the rest of the world. The characters have to be shown as unaware, self-absorbed and "clueless" or else there is no story. What makes it funny is the very fact that the characters are so clueless. This video commentary is truly more clueless than the movie.

    Ok... Y'all get that the insensitivity toward lgbt and the housekeeper's ethnicity is framed so that it makes her more vapid and uneducated, right? Yes, it's in the movie, but y'all completely left out that it is there to illustrate Cher's shortcomings...ie Josh immediately takes her to task for not knowing her own maid's nationality.

    This totally misses the point! So here are the points and my issues
    1. Toxic relationship- yes, but Cher points out that they are ‘secretly’ really sweet to each other
    2. LGBTQ stereotypes- it’s a SATIRE!! It’s meant to be funny! With Lucy- of course she isn’t developed! She is the maid are servants of ANY ethnicity well rounded? Not usually.
    3. Eating disorder- ummmmm
    She doesn’t have an eating disorder she says ‘I feel like a heifer’ because she ate an unhealthy breakfast, is two bowls of cereal, bacon, m n ms and liquorice a healthy meal? She is only referring to the nutrition value of her food. With them ‘obsessing’ over things being fat free and trying to lose weight it is actually trying to show how shallow these things are. And her when she is trying to make Mr Hall take the coffee the only reason she says she’s had too much already is just so he’ll take it and share it with Miss Guiest!
    IK I missed some stuff out but yk

    I thought this was going to be some insight into todays culture and how it was a very smart and well written movie that definitely transcends generations, and immediately it turns into an essay by a college freshman in her first women's studies class. A movie with a predominately female cast with a female protagonist based on a predominately female led book by a prominent female author passes the bechdel test? How much you wanna bed Amy Heckerling didn't once think about the Bechdel Test when writing this movie, especially as it didn't really take off as a cinematic concept until the mid to late 2000s?
    Should we be discussing how a junior in HS is a toxic male, or how he seemingly emulates the prevailing urban culture, in spite of the fact that he is clearly a very intelligent and erudite person from , assumably, an upper class, who is portraying an "identity" to appear different amongst his peers?
    The "man hating" gym teacher stereotype is obvious, but what isn't obvious is that the same "man hating" gym teacher is elbowing girls out of the way at the wedding at the end to catch the bouquet.
    Christian's "overemphasized gayness" was not in any way derogatory, but purposely cliche, just as all the kids have cliched identities. They don't know who they are so they base their "self" on external appearance and sex. The joke was that he was unabashedly broadcasting his sexuality to all of his peers, and in spite of all the clues he was giving off, Cher still didn't get it because, well, typical 15-17 year old guys don't act like that. Even the gay ones.
    Here's a topic for conversation: Did Clueless provide inspiration for the Step Brother/Sister genre of porn popular today? Kinda an odd pairing, isn't it?
    There's plenty about this movie that you notice as an adult, especially having seen it when it first came out as a kid. However, as an adult, one should be at the point where they recognize basic concepts of satire and parody, especially in light of the fact that kids today are still very much parodies of themselves. Let's just hope they grow out of it. This was a poorly researched and written essay, tantamount to a progressive grievance list solely intended to virtue signal.

    In regards to number two - do you realize that we wouldn’t get to where we are today if it wasn’t for that time? We we grow we learn and we evolve. And as a Puerto Rican who lived in LA in the late 90s, I can tell you right now that the whole Mexican thing was funny because everybody there thinks you’re a freaking Mexican. Annoying but not as insulting as a white girl thats “woke” will make you think it is.

    Oh my gosh, the stereotypes are in there for jokes. It’s a comedy. Teenage girls DO obsess over their bodies, teenagers ARE often in mildly toxic relationships, and a lot of maids for wealthy families are from places like El Salvador. Why shouldn’t girls be allowed to just talk about guys if they want without being branded as vapid or superficial? And as a woman, idk about other women, but I DO get grumpy at that time of the month because I’m in pain 😂 It’s not supposed to be perfectly politically correct, it’s not a movie from the 2010s, and thank heavens for that.

  • @croutonscarf
    @croutonscarf 10 місяців тому +3

    This one of the worst videos I have ever seen on youtube. Whoever made this clearly missed the point of ALL the satire in the movie. When Cher thinks her El Salvadorian maid is from Mexico, it’s meant to show how ignorant she is about the world beyond America. When the girls fret over the small amounts of food they’re eating, that’s meant to show how unhealthy dieting culture had become in the 90s. The character of Elton is not meant to be admired. Try learning about things like “tone” and “context” before making another video.

    JFC, do the creators of this video understand nuance, sarcasm, or comedy AT ALL?! So much of this is taken out of context and in that regard, the narrator fails to mention that all these are how the characters start out and the point of the movie is how they grow and become better people, accepting each other for who they are and relaxing their original judgments. Furthermore, I know plenty of Persians, and that "stereotype" is spot on and hardly insulting. They all love leather and drive BMWs. What exactly is wrong about either of those things? It is not so much a stereotype as it is an observation. Learn the difference! I think the biggest problem with this video is that, for some reason, young people today are not being taught how life used to be and that lack of understanding makes them sound like a bunch of whiny twits. My generation is failing them as teachers.

    I'm not saying all the points aren't valid but I was the same age as these characters at the same time and most of it is just called being a teenager. As a teenager you aren't "politically correct" most of the time regardless of socioeconomic standing. You have to live , learn and grow and as many people have pointed out Cher narrates and explains most of these things. Like the fact that Murray and Deon are really nice too each other when no one is looking.Murray, wants to be cool but he is still an insecure teenager, so he may seem a little possessive but in no way is a douche bag, that's just fear and not knowing how to have a mature relationship because well, you're not mature...lol. Movies usually over dramatize things to make them obvious like the fact that Christian was Gay. When you're that age you are still struggling to figure out who you are, which was basically one of the major themes of the movie. It was just done in a clever comedic way, to stand out from the other overly sappy teen dramedy movies and shows from that era. Not that they weren't great in their own right. I have to agree they were reaching a bit. The movie was not geared to politically correct adults, but teenagers.
