Just a heads up, _All the Young Dudes_ was written by Bowie for Mott the Hoople, and features some of his vocals but was performed by them. It remains their most well-known song to date despite the fact that they were once big enough to merit having Queen on as a support band for not one, but _two_ tours.
Clueless is one of my favorite movies and this is why. Cher is genuinely bright and altruistic, and the movie challenges you to see her clearly beyond trope-informed assumptions. Best of all, she doesn't have to change her traditionally girly presentation of herself to become a better person--the change occurs in her outlook, not her appearance.
Amy LC Screen Talk hi can u tell mI. Didn't think it was that funny and I found it a little confusing the beginning of the film also I get how she spoilt and selfish but I don't get how she is mean
yes, exactly why I love legally blonde so much! after her makeover & character development, elle or cher didn't stop persuing her feminine hobbies or stop dressing femininely, she didn't stop wearing her stylish clothes - because dressing up was what she enjoyed and made her happy. Her dressing femininely wasn't a character flaw, and she didn't start dressing masculinely or androgynously after her character developed like how it happens in many movies. She didn't automatically turn 'serious', her being poppy and sweet and girly wasn't a character flaw.
I think Clueless is one of the only and best movies that reflects how teenagers aren't meant to be comparable to adults in terms of intelligence or emotional togetherness and how telling teenagers (particularity girls) that they're stupid or shallow or airheads is unfair and often makes them stop trying in school. If someone is at their most together, intelligent and has all their priorities in the best order as a teenager then they're failing as an adult and need to stop blaming teenagers who are still growing and developing!
Too right. People gloss over this way too much. Teenagers need to be given the space and the time to make mistakes, discover that there's more to life on their own terms. It's cruel and illogical to expect someone who has spent such little *conscious* time alive to have their shit together, especially when that expectation comes from people who have much more experience and are much older. Teenagers must be shown love, respect and support through these years of discovery, or they won't reach that level of emotional maturity when the time does come to grow up. All of this is a way to say, that the same respect that adults demand for being adults and more experienced in life, should be shown the other way too. Help them get up, don't push them down! Kids aren't stupid, but say it enough and you'll make them believe they are. When they lose faith in themselves, it'll be too late to pick them up.
Exactly, some adults find it hard to relate to teenagers because they might not realize that teenage brains function differently to adults, and have not yet matured. I admire how movies such as "Clueless" and "Mean Girls" acknowledge this within their narratives, as everyone is prone to making idiotic decisions as teenagers, but that's acceptable, because we're all undergoing the same learning process. 😊💛

Clueless works so well as an adaptation because, like Austen's Emma, it's a critique of the era's social mores and norms. Unlike so many teen comedies where middle-aged writers ham-fistedly try to insert social commentary about the evils of Facebook or whatever, Amy Heckerling creates such a clear and unique voice through Cher that you believe her perspective. It also works because, crucially, Cher is not dumbed down. She is smart, if not intellectual, and uses her main talents - her voice and quick wits - to get what she wants.
Totally agree with this statement! I loved how although Cher may seem to be your typical airheaded, fashion obsessed valley girl, the film shows her to be much more deep and smart than you'd initially expect from a character befitting her archetype. By the end, Cher has had some epiphanies about herself and her methods of persuasion, and becomes more aware of others and less ditzy. 😊

Regina is not really good at arguing, she is just intimidating. If they would argue, Cher would definitely win this debate... but that's if she could say anything before Regina put out some "you're a virgin who can't drive" slash "so you agree with it, you think you're really pretty?" mean, fast and strong line that would shut Cher down with watery eyes. Thats what I see happening, so Regina would "win", but that wouldn't be an argument, would be intimidation. But If Cher would not be affected by that she would definitely have a good and complex response that would ring some "whatever loser I'm out" kind of answer by regina because she would not know anything else to say. I haven't even watched that movie, I just looked it up and it's surprisingly 90 minutes long, and you did a 20 minute video about a single character, that's impressive.
i rlly like clueless a lot also bc instead of using the typical mean girl scheme and putting girls against each other or portraying popular girls as dumb and immature they actually give them real character and development
I just finished reading Emma, and looking back at Clueless, I can honestly say that they did an amazing job adapting the story while managing to keep its key values for a new generation.
There were some great adaptations in the 90s- Clueless from Emma, 10 Things I Hate about You from Taming of the Shrew, and Cruel Intentions from Dangerous Liaisons (I have no idea how to spell that in French).
Yeah. I'm amazed at just how faithful it is. Some so-called modern adaptations, such as Roxanne (Cyrano de Bergerac) and She's All That (Pygmalion), are looser. Even if they get some of the details right, they sometimes miss the point because they may try to shoehorn a work into the wrong genre (in both examples, attempting to turn social satires into romantic comedies).
I'd love a video as companion to this one about Josh's performative intellectualism and how it's no different than Cher's airheadedness, and how at their core they're both very similar. They really are a great pair.
Honestly neither does Alicia. They could literally make a sequel today with them just graduating college and there'd only be minor suspension of disbelief.
This analysis of Cher was honestly inspiring to me. Does anyone know of any self-help/get your shit together podcasts that don't talk to me like I'm a 50 year old man with a mortgage?? I'd like to be motivated by someone who meets me at my level like Clueless, Legally Blonde, or Mean Girls

The sad part is this made me realise how much I relate to Cher ( minus, the good looks and popularity lol ) I’ve always been a little socially awkward and often have made a fool of myself without realising. I’ve been so pampered my entire life by my parents that I haven’t been able to develop minor life skills ( believe it or not, I still can’t tie a knot lol ), I also haven’t been the best at picking up social cues and I’ve often said shit that shouldn’t be said in public. Now that I’m 17 I realise that the reason I’m so painfully overbearing and dimwitted is because I never learned the importance of being receptive to important things like how people interact, how certain stuff is done and how to handle situations. I’ve been so restricted to my own bubble of thoughts and sometimes I think I know it all but when I’m exposed to situations in which I have to think quick and keep my composure I realise just how much I have left to learn. This video finally put my frustration into words haha
Same, I’m 19 but this quarantine for some odd reason made me realize how immature and childish I’m, even if I tought I knew everything I actually don’t know shit and I really relate to everything you said
I’m sorry for reading all the replies so late but omg I feel so supported seeing you guys’ response, we really aren’t alone 🥺🥺🥺 let’s take this as an opportunity to better ourselves by being more receptive to the world
Telling young women that fashion isn't important, that they need fashion to be respectable, but also that they're too ditzy to function. Is. Not. Okay. One thing I really LOVED about Cher is that she may come across as ditzy and clueless about many things, she IS her father's daughter. You can feel the affection between the two of them even though her father is almost always shouting at her 😂
about the beauty standards bit said in this video, i recently watched this movie two days ago and noticed that in a lot of the scenes in the highschool there’s girls being seen multiple times in the background looking at their new “nose job” and i don’t think this is a coincidence, it’s shown more than 3 times and i think reflects on what you were talking about earlier about the obsession of beauty.
Originally Reese Witherspoon was going to play Cher, if she did Cher would have gone off to college to later become the lawyer (legally blonde) she was destined to be.
I think you might be thinking of My So-Called Teenage Life. They didn't cast Alicia because they thought she was too pretty to be an awkward teenage girl!
That's what I adore about "The Take"- it gets you to view a movie or show you practically know inside out in a completely different light, and helps you underline hidden themes or messages that slipped by you at first glance!😁💖
Eh, I'd argue there's room for pathos. Maybe not as much as we have, but sometimes you have to trust your gut/feelings about something. One could argue that a lot of the human moral code is not grounded in logic for example, but in emotion. We shouldn't necessarily separate that part of us.
@@Scanny524 I agree with you that a lot of the human moral code is not grounded in logic, but in emotion. However, just because it IS doesn't mean it SHOULD be. That's the naturalistic fallacy (equating "is" with "ought"). I agree that sometimes you do have to act on emotion though, however I would say that's only when you lack adequate information and/or haven't had enough time to reason through a decision. If you have the time and adequate information, then you should always decide on the basis of logos alone, no pathos at all. Furthermore, if you are in a situation where you lack adequate information and haven't had time to reason through to a decision, then don't act until you do (unless you absolutely have to make a snap decision without it, in which case then yes, I suppose pathos is all you have in that case). Out of curiosity, are you a David Hume fan? If you haven't read his work I think you should. He holds a similar position to you on this point.
I like that she doesn’t need to rescind any of her femininity to grow as a person. She just needs to let go of controlling her world and open herself up to feedback. She starts out amazingly engaged and empowered for a young girl and doesn’t lose that. She just learns to handle the world with more nuance and maturity. I also like her confidence. She accepts criticism from people she respect but she sees most critics as just an aspect of society that can be handled gracefully.
true but ig it’s better that he’s an ex step brother?? i think at the beginning of the movie cher said that it was like 5 years since their parents were divorced

Having the gift of public speaking well is amazing! My mother has it and people always compliment her and she's able to get her ideas across just fine. My father, on the other hand, is also really smart but doesn't present very well his ideas and stuff, and it can be hard when you have to talk to a big audience at your job (I think he's gotten better, but he's still not the best at it). I consider Cher really smart for being able to share her ideas and thoughts so perfectly

I love how Cher can be so rich but not like all the other bratty teen like every other movie she still cares about other people and wants to help them. It’s like she is a true princess but she got lost in this word .
Cher’s strengths are such a great critique on the cultural opposition to asking and expecting more. To be entitled and pushy regarding what you know you want, can of course be toxic and petulant, but I love how Clueless acknowledges that it can also be an amazing strength to never fully settle for what you’re given - to keep pushing. It’s the kind of attitude people expect and hate from privileged, spoiled and consequentially entitled people. But that kind of attitude when harnessed with awareness and empathy, is an incredible strength.
Clueless is my favorite movie of all time and im so glad that people are able to see all the layers to this movie than just a ditzy girl who falls in love with her (literally not bc their parents had Josh and Cher with other people) step brother
I really had to think hard about Cher after watching this movie and separate her intellect and kindness from her appearance, which sucks because I've been conditioned to the prejudice that pretty girls aren't smart.
First, I thought Cher was terrible debating, but now I just see it was superficial but the techniques are all right. Thanks, I really enjoyed the analysis.
Honestly this is still one of my favourite movies. The conflict isn't about the kids putting eachother down to make themselves feel better, you have Cher's rivalry with Amber and her argument with Tai which is something unusual in movies centred around teens.

@@katherinemorelle7115 i'm french, its liaisons dangereuses ♡
I notice something, Alicia saying daddy sounds natural but Camila Mendes saying daddy doesn't??
Because when Cher says “Daddy”, She uses a more naive-child voice. When Veronica says it, It’s clearly an appeal to the “Daddy” name-calling fetish.

@@trinaq exactly what I think!
People think being traditionally feminine and being intelligent can't intersect in a Venn diagram
Missed oppurtunity for a skill Cher pun
Logos is the only aspect of persuasion that should matter, but it's usually the one that matters the least.
Scanny524 conventionally “good” morals aren’t always default, either. Some people aren’t born with the same moral code ig.
What would a teen movie version of Persuasion be like?
Alia Legally Blonde
I like that she doesn’t need to rescind any of her femininity to grow as a person. She just needs to let go of controlling her world and open herself up to feedback. She starts out amazingly engaged and empowered for a young girl and doesn’t lose that. She just learns to handle the world with more nuance and maturity.
I also like her confidence. She accepts criticism from people she respect but she sees most critics as just an aspect of society that can be handled gracefully.
I still think it's strange that Cher ended up with her step-brother
Lawrence Fernandez I thought that was weird too
true but ig it’s better that he’s an ex step brother?? i think at the beginning of the movie cher said that it was like 5 years since their parents were divorced
Yes, it's a little bizarre, but their parents are no longer married, and they're not genetically related, so it's not really a big issue.
Meh I was fine with it bc it's her ex step brother and even if they were step siblings still they aren't blood related so it's what ever
