The fuel load obviously overwhelmed the suppression system. Also, depending on how items were stored, the sprinklers could have been blocked by stacks of products. They obviously didn't have fire doors, or curtains, between sections of the warehouse, or automatic roof vents. Check your fire safety systems Walmart. Build your buildings to be fire safe. Look for the cause of the fire. Don't blame those fighting it. Regardless of how much water is available, some fires are just too big. I've been in a warehouse or two in my time, and I can tell you that when it comes to conditions inside the building I have seen some situations that gave me a little pause. And had me looking for the nearest fire exit just in case. Trust me try bringing it up with management. They don't always listen. All I know is you're looking at a lot of flammable material in a distribution center. We're talking cardboard boxes, wooden pallets, heck even the plastic ones. Not to mention clothing, any furniture that might have been in the building, and anything else that could have burnt. To me Walmart's lucky nobody died, because then they have a lot more problems than just the loss of one distribution center. I'll guarantee you Walmart wasn't exactly following fire codes when it came to the building, especially preventing fires. And as a side note my wife worked at Walmart for over 2 years. In one of the stores, and they didn't exactly do a really good job of clearing flammable boxes and other flammable materials from the back stockroom. So I just have to question whether they were doing the job in Plainfield.

I totally agree. As a fire protection specialist by degree, these centers are in my estimation "built to burn". Walmart Management is just like many other "big box" stores. Next time you go into "Any" of them as they're designed all the same, do your own fire inspection !! Other than main "exit's" where are they? Clearly life safety is number one. I tell all my friends and loved ones; if you hear a Fire Alarm, LEAVE. Forget your cart and get out!!
Next, zero material separation. No fire walls with fire doors SO, your lumber, flammables and combustibles are inter mixed under one roof. My question is, "are employees trained to use the first aid fire suppression equipment"?? Why is there "Marginal delay in notifying fire departments"?? There are employees all over aside from customers who I would think NOTICE A FIRE IMMEDIATELY! Now the question of shutting DOWN Automatic Sprinkler Risers! Not only am I a degreed specialist in fire suppression but a 20 yr fire fighter. Once the riser over the fire operates, providing it is protecting a fire not designed for, water flows on the fire, a fire pump starts and if the area is not "overloaded" it will CONTAIN the fire until arrival of fire fighters...Now hear are the problems, fire load of mixed materials (flammable and Combustibles). The sprinklers are impaired!!! Now the fire grows toward the ROOF. Once the fire goes through the roof and roof and ceiling material fails and falls BRINGING DOWN SPRINLER PIPING. Now you have potentially a Six inch main open to flow. Now the next section is Unprotected. So you shut down the risers and keep your water at pressure available for manual fire fighting. From my experience you might want to "trench" the roof but that depends on fire spread below and fire fighter Safety!
I personally believe these buildings are built to burn considering the fire loading! Heck they're insured as a highly protected risk. I sincerely doubt that even if the complex had a knowledgeable person on fire protection, management would not listen. The purpose is to "make money"!! I'm certain they have a corporate person, yet doubt his/her recommendations are adhered to!
Managements ultimate goal as it should is to Evacuate In event of a fire. You can replace buildings, not people!
Next time you go into Any big box store, do your own fire inspection

Still scratching my head on this one. Walmart knows exactly who or what started this fire because it was all caught with CCTV cameras which are staged every 5'ft through out the building. There is no privacy from CCTV camera's whatsoever inside these warehouses except maybe the toilet stalls. Even the parking lots outside are under extreme video surveillance. As for Walmart's tort claim, no basis whatsoever. Somebody knows something but keeping it a secret, those video captures from the CCTV system is in someones possession. Another head scratcher is the elaborate high pressure fire suppression systems installed in all of these modern logistics warehouses. Why was it not able to contain the fire before outside intervention was necessary? Something really fishy going on here and the last thing Walmart should be doing is laying the blame where it is not warranted.

Let’s see all the annual inspection reports on the fire system and building. Another thing is water is a finite resource. I doubt the mains could support the sprinkler system and all the engines and trucks hooked into the system. The sprinkler system is used to keep a fire in check in small areas. The system was overwhelmed as the fire spread. If the system couldn’t keep up, Walmart had too much fire load in the building. I.e, too much crap stored.

I remember one of my jobs when I worked at the Walgreens distribution center was whenever I would be on the top floor of a storage area to make sure there was at least 3 to 4 ft of distance between the top of the items and the sprinkler for fire suppression. If you have an item 6 in to a foot away from a sprinkler it can drastically reduce its efficiency. Whenever it came around to the fire inspection I would have the task of basically spending the entire night moving stuff so that we would pass. I didn't always go up every storage unit to the very top so I wasn't always paying attention everywhere but the week before I would basically do a walkthrough of the entire upstairs to make sure we were to code. And that's Walgreens I wouldn't be surprised if a place like Walmart didn't even have somebody doing that.
Also when it comes to them shutting off different parts of a fire suppression system it's simply to put the amount of water the system uses into an area where it's going to be more effective. If you have a blazing fire that is out of control the water suppression system isn't going to be that effective. So you divert the water to another area that isn't on fire or on fire that much so you can try and create a fire line where everything is soaking wet and the fire has nothing to burn. I can't put my two cents in on opening the doors for ventilation because that makes it seem like it would be a worse thing but at the same time I'm not a firefighter so I can't really say especially because I wasn't boots on the ground.
You think with how much money Walmart makes they can eat the cost. My question is how did the fire start? Fires don't just randomly ignite there's always a human component in it. Whether it's a neglect or purposeful there were humans inside of that warehouse that contributed to the fire burning. Seems to me that Walmart's trying to point the blame somewhere else because they know they were in the wrong.

Btw when fighting Any fire you determine in size up if it’s offensive or defensive. This looked like it would be defensive but it does sound like they did some offense ops. - About the open door! Yes oxygen will feed a fire but this isn’t a candle were talking about. - once furniture and all that crap starts burning. If you don’t ventilate properly you will trap hot gasses (aka dark black smoke) and it will increase the air temp inside until you have a simultaneous combustion! Known as a flash over! - let’s say you wanna be cute and choke off the oxygen in a fire this big, with this many fuel sources! Yes you may get the flames to go away and just have glowing coals of furniture , appliances, & all the crap inside. But fires this size have incredibly powerful inflow / outflow smoke flows. I’ve seen multiple furniture stores have a backdraft and blow the front off the store off, which ultimately collapsed the buildings! These fires usually will always find oxygen in the end. - but furniture fires are the times I’ve actually feared for my life in a fire. They just have a aggressive attitude because of the perfect fuel source. You have. Cloth, foam, & wood. Then the TVs / electronics have that nasty plastic which is a nightmare it’s self. The smoke is terrible. Normally I see flames of every color at warehouses and furniture stores just because amount and type of fuels available. -- this looks like Walmart is trying to fill the media with accusations of firefighter negligence so nobody ask the question. “how did you, GOD ol Mighty Walmart allow this fire to start in the first place?” I don’t think they want to answer that.

They are stacked i believe 5 or 6 high in steel racks. They're below the sprinkler heads, but not by much. I've been in many of them delivering loads over the years. There's only one dividing wall in them, and it separates the " dry" side from the cooler/freezer side, so if fire gets to the ceiling, it can lap over and run unhindered.

ATF doesn't investigate fire fighting operations. OSHA, NFPA, USFA investigate fire department operations.
there's a delicate balance between shutting off the sprinkler system and ventilation. At a minimum, there should be someone permanently assigned to sprinkler riser post for the duration of the operations.

The fact that Walmart is suing multiple agencies in the local area speaks a great volume and none really in a good light for Walmart. I understand Walmart wants a scapegoat to pay for this terrible incident however, in suing multiple agencies, you inherently recognize the scope of this incident... the fact of the matter is this incident rates up there in many regards to some of the worst fire catastrophes in our country’s history. This was more than one agency could manage, more than a handful working in great concert could have managed. Walmart is suing these agencies based on the best case scenario of a firefighters response, and that is just as wrong as what we did the Sollenberger.
