Thanks for uploading this useful video. I think this is the only video on youtube regarding NSSO data extraction. Would like to learn various techniques of NSSO data analysis from you.
Thank you for the appreciation. I have a presentation this Tuesday, therefore, won't be able to post before that. However, after the presentation I will start posting new videos frequently. If you liked the video, then please like and subscribe to the channel.
Thank you for your comment. Today I will be uploading video on how to get STATA 16 and its predecessors for free and video on how to get NSSO data is in progress and it will soon be on this channel.
Thank you for creating video on such an important topic. Sir, the data I am downloading from website is not having files similar to yours and therefore, I ain't able to follow your guided steps. I request you to kindly make a video of downloading the data from Mospi site and guide us which all files to use. Thank you so much again.
I'm trying to extract nsso time use survey data following the same what you taught here in video. i'm using stata 13. data didn't extract, it's showing dictionary invalid. i followed the exactly same procedure what's you tell here while extractiong data. can you please guide me in this regard, sir?
Thank you for explaining it so well. I have a query related to the recent NSS round data that's been released. I followed a similar process as shared by you in the video but while extracting data for level 2 and 11, after creating dictionary files for these levels I was unable to extract data. Some error showed up. Also, for level 5, the extracted data had one less observation as compared to the number of records mentioned in the readme file. Could you please guide?
I used a curly bracket from the line after dictionary to the end of the data, a line appeared parallel to the data on left hand side, and now dictionary file is working
Very informative. It will be very helpful if you can make some videos on how to calculate inequality (in both Gini coefficient and Theil index) using Monthly Per capita expenditure in the district level.
very useful video...would like to see video on getting higher version STATA for free along with NSS unit level data and also working with and interpreting the extracted data
Thank you very much for preparing such a simple explanation of NSSO data extraction. I am working on 77 round.. With stata 15.. But every time it is showing unrecognized data how can i over come this
thanks, Sir it is very helpful. U extracted a single value of the data I want to extract multiple data to a single value. could you please give ane suggestion how I mean I want opposide what u did.
@@DataOperationsandResearch Hey, I have a similar issue. The NSS dataset doesn't have Supporting Documents (www.icssrdataservice.in/datarepository/index.php/catalog/14/get_microdata). Please clarify where you got the data layout file from?
Very informative and useful. I would suggest if you can say if the process is the same for ASI or Economic Census. If yes can be please show the process for ASI data.
Did u download this nsso data from icssr, if so then there is a stata format that is available there. Moreover,it also has a tsv format from which you can easily open and save it in excel spreadsheet, isn't it?
You have correctly extracted the data, this one observation less problem is the problem of the dataset. Everyone who correctly extracts the data will get one less observation.
this video was very helpful. I have one query the layout file is a prerequisite for extraction but in NSS Employment and Unemployment Round 55th and 50th round layout file is not given. How will I extract it then? where can I get it? I cannot get it on the MOSPI website.
I just opened the dictionary file in word by mistake so its showing error r (614) while extracting data by infile using. So, help me to come out this problem...
Thanks for the video. But i am surprised to see that when extracting NSSO data in stata, 'the observed data read' shows in the stata screen is just one less than the no. of records shown in the readme file for all the levels in 73rd round data. I am using sata 11. Can you pls tell me what could be the problem? I am extracting the NSSO data for the first time following your video.
Is it possible that stata considers the first row of the data as the variable and not data due to the stata setting? In that case then, how do i chage the stata settings?
I don't think that you are doing anything wrong. Sometimes, the number of observations given by the NSS is wrong. The same problem is there in NSS 75th round. So, you don't neet to worry. If you are following the correct method, then your results are correct. Also, I will check it once and update my comment if this is not the case.
I can make video on how to do regression, however, the problem is that there are so many possible regressions that it can't be covered in a video. But surely, will try to cover some regressions and also explain how to do other regressions.
Open the extracted data in Stata. Browse the data using command br for a1, a2 or all the data. Press enter. It will open Data Editor, copy all the data using Ctrl+ C and paste it in a Excel file.
Hi, first of all great video! Thanks a ton! You explained it quite clearly. I was actually struggling with one thing. While extracting the 75th round NSSO data for social consumption health survey data, the level 2 file has far less observations than what is specified in the readme file (65081 instead of 113823). I have followed the steps as mentioned in the video, and have verified it multiple times, but getting the same result every time. Could you please help me out with this? Thankyou!!
You have correctly extracted the data. The NSSO has made mistake and put one extra observation. So, don't worry, you have correctly extracted the data.
@@DataOperationsandResearch hi Same here ! i have used the method as shown in the video and while extracting data i am getting only one record less ! total records in read me file for level is 113,823 and I am getting 113,822. Don't know where I am getting wrong. Further checking the Rural / Urban HH, this one record is less in urban HH. Please suggest if you have any idea.
You have correctly extracted the data. It is the problem with the NSS and they have written one observation more. So, you are good to move ahead with your analysis.
Video is very informative, but from where we start at initial level. From where to get these files? If you could explain this, it would be very helpful
Just go into the pdf which has the list of txt files. The Files are embedded in that. you have to move your cursor on those .txt files to download them
Very informative video, now finally I can extract NSSO DATA
Glad it helped
Thank you so much for this video. Now i could extract data from NSSO which I was struggling for. Looking forward to follow other videos.

I'm having the same issue, did you solve it?

I am unable to find Datalay of 71st round of nsso schedule 25.2. Can you please help to get it?

Thank you so much for the video.
When i run the infile using (dictionary path) in command, result shows dictionary invalid.
found #NAME? as result after entering concatenate function. Plz help.
Thank you so much for this.

The process is majorly same. Read the readme file correctly and you should be able to extract the ASI data.

The problem should go away by changing the file type from docx to txt and making notepad as default app to open txt file.

the same problem is coming in some of the other levels too. Is it because of missing data in those observations?
You have correctly extracted the data. The NSSO has made mistake and put one extra observation. So, don't worry, you have correctly extracted the data.

Can this be used for 74th round on education as well?
Yes, the process is the same. Just carefully read the readme and schedule file.
for NSSO 75 th round social consumption on education i am getting one less observation for each stage can anybody confirm this?
You have correctly extracted the data. It is the problem with the NSS and they have written one observation more. So, you are good to move ahead with your analysis.
