  • The FW11 was by far the dominant car of 1986 and 87, not only for having one of the most powerful engines on the grid, but also a lower and sleeker aerodynamic body. With the acquisition of 2 time world champ Nelson Piquet to compliment rising star Nigel Mansell, there was no reason to believe Williams would do anything but win. But of course, everything went wrong during the season, beginning with the near fatal car accident of team owner Frank Williams in March. With their team principal in hospital, the rivalry between Mansell and Piquet began to take its toll on everyone, with both drivers eventually losing their massive points lead to Alain Prost by seasons end, although they did still win the constructors championship. Piquet (and allegedly Honda) insisted that Mansell should have let him by multiple times during the season, but Frank Williams assured Mansell that there was nothing in the contract specifying team orders. The relationship between everyone continued to deteriorate throughout 1987, culminating in a heavy crash for Mansell in Japan, which clinched the title for Piquet. Piquet then left the team for Lotus, taking his Honda contract with him, leaving Williams to look for an engine supplier over the winter.
I remember this being my absolute favorite car in Gran Turismo 3, even though the cars from 94 were faster. Already at that point I was enjoying older cars more. At the time I just liked the look of it more. Now I enjoy it because it's one of the last F1 cars to not feature any driving aids (that I know of).
