**CORRECTION - the crop will stack on all APSC/Active Stabilization/lens breathing comp. It’ll almost be around 1.7-1.9x crop in total. Thank you to David Pichevin for pointing it out!!
OH SNAP! I am so stoked, thank you so much for this opportunity! I was so excited to see your new video drop, I've been eyeing the 24mm for a while and this vid perfectly summed up what I was wanting to know about it. It seems so versatile when considering the capabilities of the A7IV when it comes to native cropping, it pretty much becomes a two in one lens with the benefit of being a prime! Loved the vid as always, can't wait to see what you make next! Also just sent over the email, tysm again! :)
Loved the video! Correct me if i’m wrong but background compression is caused by the distance from the subject not the lens. If you use a zoom lens in crop mode(assuming there markings are correct)at 24 and take a picture. Now keep the distance the same, zoom into 36mm, disable crop mode, take a picture. The background compression in these two photos will be identical only the depth of field will be different.
So glad someone finally called out the UA-camr BS that crop mode is the same as using a tighter Focal length, it’s not, specially with wide or ultra wide lenses, the distortion and compression varies a lot
For me 24mm is just perfect for most cases in what I do and what I plan to do in the future, it's not too wide and looks normal to the eyes. But that's just my preference, it can either be different or the same for other people. And yeah, I'll probably pick up a 24mm and a 35mm first after I buy a zoom lens when I buy a camera.
Such a versatile lens tbh! Either 24 or 35 as an all around lens. The primes are just so good! Zoom is a nice first lens though. Don’t need to carry many lenses lol
@@VictorLaforteza Wow I want it also but I don't know the release date of 50mm 1.4 here in Thailand. Do you think it's okay if I use 24mm as my only lens?? Since I don't have the budget for the 50mm 1.4 for now?
Great vid & talking points! I personally pair my 35mm 1.4 GM with the 20mm 1.8 because the 24 is quite close to the 35 also considering price of GMs BUT I totally agree with you the 24mm is PERFECT for video.. just looking at your shot they look very cinematic at 24mm. Considering selling the 20mm for the new 16-35 PZ
It's the perfect in between focal length! especially if you don't have the 35mm. I was so close to switching lol! 20mm is great because it's almost half the price of the 24 and the performance is very similar. that 16-35 pz looks tempting though....
do you still consider a lens that you can't do without? Is there anything better? I love 24 1.4, but I fear I would keep the camera in active / dynamic active stabe and I feel like 30mm isn't wide enough...should I get 20mm if I usually use dynamic active and hand held? or is 24 better b/c it can be used with a gimbal?
I still love 24mm whether its 1.4 or 2.8! Some love the 20mm 1.8 better because its just a bit wider. But to answer your question, yes. It's still a lens I can't do without.
Love your guys' content. Have been watching for a while- and your coverage of Taiwan is phenomenal. As my mom is from Argentina and my dad is from Taiwan so we speak both spanish and chinese in the home, ya'll feel like home to me!! :)) I hope we continue to grow to that fat 10,000 subscriber mark soon. Amazing work, grading, and tips. I have the A7IV with a 20 mm 1.8, which I've loved for vlogging, etc. I just kind of think 20 mm is too wide sometimes to have that cinematic look :P Things tend to look a bit more distorted. I wonder if this 24 mm would be a better choice... Choices choices!
Thank you so much!! Home is the best feeling ever! I think the 20mm is such a good value compared to the 24mm. Great for vlogging indeed and wide shots but it is kinda too wide anything else. Hard choice but don't let it bother you! enjoy the 20mm it's another great lens!
Love the camera! I use it a lot for my smaller scale work. I don’t shoot sports or any fast moving shots so the rolling shutter doesn’t really ruin any shots.
Sure, it's also my favorite lens. It sticks on my A7iv and use it 80% of the time on a monopod/gimbal. On my other A7iv either 55mm or 24-105 for b-roll/reach.
@@VictorLaforteza thanks for your video btw. And indeed. Best run-and-gun lens. Especially if you don’t know what to expect on the shoot. But I tend to do more shoots with the 24 and 55 combi if I know more or less what to expect.
It will actually crop twice if you turn on both active stabilization and breathing compensation. And it all comes up to a pretty big crop. It will also crop twice if you are in APSC mode. To use only when really needed.
Thank you for pointing it out! Already posted a pinned comment for the correction. Ahhhhh they really crippled the cam with the crop. Well extra reach then! 🙃 lol
How about using 24mm GM and 35mm GM with the a7 iv? I was considering 50mm 1.2 to go with my 24mm 1.4 but its still too expensive 35mm would give a 50 fov with more background compression than 24mm. Overkill oder good choice?
I think 24mm and 35mm is way too close to each other. You could do 24mm and 50mm or 35mm and 85mm. You can always go with a different 50mm vs a GM lens because it’s super pricy but if you’re using it for work, I don’t see how you could easily expense it! Really awesome lens for a 50mm.
@@VictorLaforteza I shoot a lot of video in 50fps (pal) the crop was the main reason I was considering the 35mm, 50mm or 85mm become very very narrow when going crop mode... I will try to rent the 50mm GM what I have seen so far looks very delicious.....
Another solid video dude! Keep it up man. I'm still working out what lenses work best for me. I've just purchased the 24-105 G lens, can't wait for it to arrive! Have you had a play with the mini G lenses Sony brought out last year? I have the 40mm and I love it. I don't think I'll personally need the 1.4 of the GM so considering the 24mm G 2.8 as my next lens.
Thank you, Ged! I was eyeing on the 24-105 actually. I think F4 is good enough for full frame. Another good all around lens with a great range! I need a good zoom lens for convenience. I haven’t yet tbh! It looks perfect for a travel setup. 1.4 is so overkill tbh and 2.8 is the biggest I’ll go for pro work. 24 & 40 should be a good pair! Imagine using it on the Sony air peak drone 🤔🤔
@@VictorLaforteza ohh man what a dream. I love the 40mm on my a7c, such a small setup and if I'm just taking photos or shooting for fun it's just so easy to carry around! But yeah with the fx3, 12800 iso can achieve so much with an f4, that's why I pulled the trigger!

@@VictorLaforteza Yeah.... I thought about that too. 24mm on the fx30 wouldn't be wide enoough. I think the sony E 15mm f1.4 would be a better option. I would also love to buy a power zoom lens by sony but i don't know which I should go for, love the 16-35 f4.0 PZ but then I saw the 18-105 f4 PZ for 1/3 of the price. Probably the lower price is due to lower image quality.....
Thank you for another great video Victor! You just made my choice between the 35mm 1.4 GM and 24mm 1.4 GM a lot harder. Based on your review, I will now rent the 24mm to test out.
