YA’LL We had over 4-HOURS of history! There was so much more to share. Like how we were land owners back in the 1700’s and how my last name comes from a woman! Everyone, we are all so much more than what history books tells us. The beautiful rich narratives, love stories and sacrifices that live inside of Us. We are all amazing.

Eli, I was born in Chicago and grew up in Rio Grande. I loved this because I want to do the same, I only could find my paternal grandparents marriage license but this inspired me to go deeper in my roots. I always wondered where my last name came from so that’s gonna be on my bucket list, search, search and more searching. I felt like screaming: vecinooooo!!! 😂

If I could like this video 100x’s I would! 💛 I spent about 30+ hrs researching my family history in Ancestry and was able to go back to the 1800’s and with certain members found possible documentation of their slave owners. How we got here matters, who came before us matters. It’s shows where we came from to help shape where we are going! So glad you were able to learn about your family history and even discover which tribe your family originated from. I’ve learned the Yoruba tribe was one of the biggest and most captured during slavery and to solidify that connection is priceless 💛

Something I've never understood is why Americans (the US I guess technically speaking) omits the second last name. How many Peter Smith's must there be in one state, heck, one town, and you need to find one specific Peter Smith for whatever reason. You know what might help? ANOTHER LAST NAME.

I have a lot of matches on 23andme from Puerto Rico and haven't been able to figure out how/why we are related. But, now I'm going to look into the history of free Blacks who maybe went to PR from Jamaica now that I've learned abt it in your video. Thank you for this clue!!!

@@AdrianaRiveraprhistory thank you so much. Great job! I previously assumed it may have been a slavery connection with enslaved African families being separated at different ports or captured at different times (which is still a possibility but very challenging to prove). The freed Black angle is something I hadn't thought of/wasn't aware of.

I've been at it for months and recently discovered that i have another cousin and aunt that no one told me about due to "shame" and "scandal".. So who can I hire to do this for my family (Mexican) and how much would it cost?

Genealogical research is pretty expensive, that's why I created my PR genealogy UA-cam channel. I wanted to teach ppl how to do it for themselves. Even though my channel is focused on PR family history, there are definitely videos that can help you do this for your Mexican family too. Check out my UA-cam channel for tips on family history research!

I had to do a family tree project way back in middle school. I don't know much from either side but I learned a lot from my dads side. Sadly my presentation board was lost and I couldn't get it back.

Awesome video. This is why I love genealogy. I started with husband and 30+ years later, I still have the passion. My biggest advice is, you have to be patient when researching. Just because the information you seek isn’t on the computer, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Also, think outside the box when you hit a brick wall. When you are a genealogist, you are a detective. Happy Hunting. 🕵🏻‍♀️

Yup, can relate. I was born and raised in Ponce, and all i have is lore, mystery. My grandfather’s mother is not in the census, my great grandfather had a greek first name, our last name is not at all common in the island. My grandfather had two birthdays, which is apparently common in his generation.

i've been trying to do this for a long time and I've only gotten so far it's very difficult because Spanish people Latinos share common names so you might have an ancestor that has this first name and this last name but there's also thousands of people who have the same name around the same time so to dig and find birth certificates and death certificates. It's very helpful but when you get to a certain point there was no death certificates. There was no birth certificate.

I think Eli and I might be related both through the De Jesus and the Correa... I am still trying to figure out how I'm related to these families, but those surnames appear on my DNA relatives like crazy lol and about 90% of my DNA relatives in AncestryDNA, 23&Me and MH are all from Puerto Rico, yet no one in my family knows that connection lol
