    Steve Kerr lead the Spurs come from behind victory in game 6 of the 2003 Western Conference Finals. The win sent the Spurs to the Finals.
    The Spurs outscored the Mavericks 42-15 once Kerr entered the game. San Antonio outscored Dallas 34-9 in the 4th quarter and had an amazing 23-0 run in the 4th to turn a 13 point deficit into a 10 point lead. Steve Kerr was 4-4 from 3 point range and was vital in pumping life back into the Spurs offense.

      Ballsy as hell for Popovich as well, making that adjustment. It would be like if Doc Rivers had brought in Joakim Noah to guard Jokic. Sometimes you gotta take that leap of courage, take that risk. You can’t just go with “we stick with what worked in the regular season” so stubbornly, that’s why coaches like Popovich and Kerr are so great.

      Sol_Protege not just that but the Mavs played a 2-3 zone in this one to deny the post and have a defender on his back and another over the top. It was working as you hear he went 27 minutes of game time without a field goal! But with good ball movement you can destroy a 2-3 zone especially side to side and that's exactly what the Spurs did they finally figured it out in the 2nd half.

      Good team. Overrated in my opinion. Probably the worst of the 5 spurs championship squads. They didn’t really have to face anyone good. The Mavericks and the Kings were the only other real contenders that year and they both suffered devastating injuries to their best players who happened to be power forwards. Personally if Chris Webber never gets injured I think they would have throttled the Mavericks and beaten the spurs in 6 or 7. The kings had a slightly better defense and offense than the spurs that year. They were looking unstoppable until that injury. And even with Webber they took the mavs to 7

    Great moment in Spurs history. What makes this even greater is the fact that Big Dave Robinson was dealing with a very serious back injury. He played limited minutes that game and was actually on the bench at this point in the game because his back was just killing him. Stevie Kerr's second and third three pointers made Big Dave forget about his ailing back. He freaking does a 360 fist pump while bouncing up and down like when he was a rookie. It wasn't just that Steve Kerr made the four 3 pointers, it's that he made all the right plays. Look at :48, when Manu drives to the basket, Kerr is wide open on the left wing. He was in the right spot every time. He made the right passes, he got the assists and the hockey assists. This is the reason Kerr and Horry were so good at their roles and were part of so many championship teams, cause they knew what their roles were and made the correct play almost every time.

    I didn't go to school after this, it was so emotionally deflating what happened. The Mavericks without Dirk Nowitzki had been on a miracle run and were playing great basketball over the last 7 quarters and then all of the sudden....the air just deflated out of the arena. The screams from the crowd were some of the most piercing I've ever seen in an NBA game. The Mavericks simply stopped playing once Steve Kerr entered. It was an amazing thing to see. The Mavericks could have had an NBA championship that year, it was the best team they ever had, and it just fell apart in a matter of minutes before everyones eyes. And Duncan and Robinson had no involvement in it. It was really bad, especially after how their Game 5 victory went where Michael Finley, Nick Van Exel, Walt Williams and Steve Nash played incredible basketball. Even though the Mavericks eventually got a title years and years later, this was really the team it should have happened for. It was never the same after that....

      What this video doesn't show is the shots after shots after shots from Steve Nash, Nick Van Exel, etc that somehow do not go down time after time after time. So many shots in and out. Shots they were making all year. They just could not quite hang on, but that team made it very far for having the injuries that they did. I think they only had 7 or 8 active players at this point due to the old NBA rules of not allowing injured players to be replaced.

      Tim Duncan had everything to do with that run. All the focus was on him which allowed open space for his shooters. And the reason the Mavs were missing their shots was because they were gassed, and were simply just not built for that level. That’s what usually happens with high octane offensive teams with poor defense.

    • @TRJ2241987
      @TRJ2241987 4 роки тому +2

      The Mavericks were extremely gassed because they literally only had 7 active players at this point. Back in 2003, if a player got injured in the Playoffs, the team wasn't allowed to replace him with another inactive player. Your 12 man roster was set going into the Playoffs. The Mavs lost Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Bradley permanently in the SAME GAME. The credit for the Spurs run agains the Mavericks in Game 6 completely belongs to Stephen Jackson, Manu Ginobili, and Steve Kerr, along with horrid defense by Steve Nash.

    The 2003 Spurs finished off the Lakers with a 44-18 run to close the game; closed out the Mavs with this 42-15 run to end it, and then ended the last game of the NBA Finals against the Nets with a 43-20 run. Talk about great finishers.

But I had no idea they would just go on that kind of run. Amazing game and great playoff win to that lead them to their 2nd NBA championship. This is one of my all time favorite Spurs games I watched. #GoSpursgo

    Actually I take that back, Nique didn't make the top 50 list(I think he stuck out in my mind because he should have made the list), but he still came runner up in MVP voting in 85' or 86' I think it was, without playing a lick of D. the question is whether your offensive skills and passing can make up for a lack of defensive skills.

    This is what separates coaches like Popovich, Kerr, Phil Jackson from a guy like Doc Rivers. They’re not afraid to take risks. It takes courage to make adjustments like this. Steve Kerr with the 2015 Warriors could have just been like “we’re gonna stick with what worked all season and got us 67 wins.” Instead, in the Finals, he made the decision to start Iguodala after never starting him the entire season, and it paid off. It takes courage to do that, because if it doesn’t work out, he would take a lot of blame, whereas if he just stuck with “what worked all season” like Doc always does, he can always fall back on that. Phil Jackson would make adjustments like starting Dennis Rodman against Shaq and letting him guard Shaq single coverage in the playoffs. He would have been crucified if that didn’t work out, with the media saying how could you possibly put a 6-8 220 lbs guy who’s 35 years old and past his prime on a 7’1” 330 lbs. dominant monster Center. But Phil made that adjustment, he went for it. Doc just always says “we went with what worked all year for us” and “the head coach’s job is to resist change.” You need to make a change if the same shit ain’t working.
