I've came from both industry switching and shortline. Was in the Army as well so looking forward to working with NS. I'm just waiting for a date to start school. Class III it's narrowed down into a weeks training and you're turned a loose when we feel you can switch and do the job in a safely manner. Safely is priority one if you're gonna do this job. The days of kicking cars to classify a outbound train or to bring railcars in to fill the leads up is long gone. Blind shove don't do it! Ride the point and set a sufficient amount of brakes. If something doesn't feel safe don't do it. If you don't know the answer to something your engineer will work with you to help you. Again safety is priority one and it will get you fired quickly if you take short cuts.
Waiting on a start date is the slowest part of the process. Training at NS is usually 13 weeks in total...3 in GA and 10 on your home terminal. This will depend on the business needs at your yard and how quickly you pick it up. Your TM may hold you longer or push you through faster. Just do things safely and you will be just fine
Thanks for the video! Currently waiting on my medical and then start date. Any idea how long it will take after medical clears until I get a start date? What if I need to wrap up some personal things and work stuff before I go? Do they give you the option to delay your start date, or if you can’t go when they schedule you are you dismissed? Thanks for the help!
@@t.y.g.9607 depends on what’s important to you. Conductor/Engineer is more money and a more lucrative career path. MOW is a better work life balance and schedule.
