And now Dick Smothers lived as almost as long as George Burns. Such beautiful talent they all had together ❣️❣️❣️❣️.

It's interesting to see Mason Williams credited as one of the writers; and Hal Goldman wrote for Jack Benny's show before moving on to the Smothers Brothers.

It's clear in this clip and the other from this episode that Jack Benny doesn't want to sing.

It took onions for an established actor to appear on the Smothers Brothers in 1967. They were under fire from the usual sources, mostly for their anti-war stance and challenging the status quo. CBS was under pressure to cancel their show, which they eventually did (but brought them back later). Burns and Benny both caught crap for appearing on the show, with some right wingers calling them anti-American and bad Jews. When the brothers were under serious fire in 1968 Benny called them and said he'd come on their show, anytime. Burns said he would join Benny. Burns said many years later, when asked, that he'd do the show again in a heartbeat.

On March 8, 1965, the first American combat troops - the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade - waded ashore at China Beach north of Da Nang.
Gracie: Frank, I just sent a telegram to my campaign chairman in the Middle West.
      Frank: Oh, good.
Gracie: He told me he couldn’t get any support from the farm belt.
      George: So what?
Gracie: So I told him to wear suspenders.
Geroge: What if the county seat has two pairs of pants.
Gracie: Oh, George, you’re just trying to say stuff to get me to say silly things so people will laugh at me.
      George: That’s bad, huh?
Truman: Gracie, what is going to be the name of your party?
Gracie: Well, Truman, you’ve hear of the Democratic party and the Republican party?
      Truman: Yes.
Gracie: Well, mine is going to be the Surprise party.
      George: The what?
Gracie: The Surprise party. Surprise: S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E
George: S for screwy. U for useless.
Gracie: Yeah, and R for reading, writing and arithmatic.
      George: P for penhead.
Gracie: And R for oysters are in season. And I for eye for an eye.
George: And tooth for a tooth.
Gracie: And S for some fun and E for pencil.
      George: E for pencil?
      Gracie: Eversharp?
George: Well, that all de-pencil on how you look at it.
Truman: Surprise Party is a swell name. How did you come to call it that, Gracie?
Gracie: Well, my daddy’s a Democrat and my mother is a Republican and when I was born I was a surprise!
Frank, I just sent a telegram to my campaign chairman in the Middle West.
George: So was the panic of 1907

you look at what they did back then was "MILD" compared to what we have today. in my estimation "MIKE DANN" and "FRED SILVERMAN" of "CBS" were "IDIOTS"!!!!!. they cancelled a lot of "GOOD" shows, that they later admitted that they made a mistake!!!!!
