  • This is the Story of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, known as Portugal's Schindler. In this front episode we discuss the Portuguese consular who issued visas and other documents and saved many refugees (including many Jews) from the Germans, allowing them to enter Portugal and even flee Europe via Port Lisbon.

I am a Canadian of Nova Scotian/Brit ancestry but I live in Toronto's Little Portugal and I was totally unaware of Aristides de Sousa Mendes. That said, I know the quality of Portuguese people and am not surprised a Man as this existed. I'd say the nickname is ok because it makes people understand what a great man he was easy but I am going to remember Aristides for his name. Thank you for sharing this and educating us about a great man!

Aristides was a true hero, and we all need to think why he suffered... Thousands of thieves and corrupted embassy clerks enjoyed much better lives while true heroes like him died alone in poverty. Even today we are responsible to find out why! Why the Portuguese government and society have chosen to punish him .

The Swiss diplomat Carl Lutz literally saved around 60'000 jews in Hungary during the war and the Swiss government failed to recognise his actions and said, what he was doing, had exceeded his authority and endangered Swiss neutrality. Would be great, if you could make a video about him.

It's very well done your video, not only Jews people he saved, the future french general Lecrelc had also a visa from Aristides . When Portuguese officials came to arrest him he had fled to Bayonne et make visas to everyone that was in railway train to Spain during almost a week our two. Only France make a telefilm about him and his incredible adventure. For me is an honour knowing that, a consul, a official fighting this monstrosity against is own country dictator. Proud to be Portuguese also like me.

Instead of Schindler, it would be more apt to compare Mendes to other diplomats, such as Raoul Wallenberg (Swedish) or Chiune Sugihara (Japanese), who as Schindler, made the moral decision to save Jewish refugees and others at the the risk of their careers, reputations or lives.

    • @sirmeowthelibrarycat
      @sirmeowthelibrarycat 3 роки тому

🤔 Hello. I am pleased to find another admirer of the Japanese diplomat, Chiune Sugihara. Unlike the Nazis, the Japanese had no negative views concerning Jews. In Japan the Nazi attitude towards certain peoples was incomprehensible. Yet they assumed high superiority towards other Asian people. Inscrutability to the extreme, it would seem.

    Curious facts:
Aristedes' home, Casa do Passal in Cabanas do Viritato, was recently restored after decades of total abandonment and degradation. His home was here: goo.gl/maps/fV699ysZdYCPFaBCA
In Vilar Formoso, one of Portugal's main borders with Spain, stands the "Vilar Formoso - Fronteira da Paz" museum, opened in 2017.
Located in 2 repurposed warehouses of the beautiful train station this museum tells the story of the WWII refugees that arrived in Portugal via Vilar Formoso, as a memorial to them and Aristides de Sousa Mendes. It's worth the visit. While there isn't many English information available about it, I'll leave some links:

Had Schindler not joined the Nazi Party or the Abwehr, he wouldn't have been able to save a single Jew, never mind 1,200. His position as a factory owner demanded membership in the party, and protected his Jewish workers only with his Abwehr connections. I'm curious how he could have done so without these affiliations. No other person is like Schindler as no other German used their own wealth and status as he did.

The comparison to Oskar Schindler is wrong. Schindler is in a class by himself, namely as the only German who used his connections and personal wealth to protect those destined for death. This is the first I've learned of Sousa Mendes, but he is in a league with diplomats like Raoul Wallenberg, Feng Shan Ho, and as mentioned below Folke Bernadotte and Carlos Sampaio Garrido, who went against their government's wishes to grant passports to fleeing Jews, and nearly all of whom were later punished or murdered.

    Why "the portuguese Schindler"?
More Schindler "the german Sousa Mendes"!!!
By the way: Schindler could rescue 1200 persons, Sousa Mendes more than 10.000!
And Sousa Mendes acted some years before Schindler, who was also a party member, where Sousa Mendes was in no party and was a monarchist

Divine will? I think it was probably just chance. You know, something that's actually real.

I love the videos but I think you'd be way more popular if you didn't just read everything like a fact sheet and tried to make things more fun
