    BRIEF HISTORY OF GHANA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
    Ghana Senior High School transformed from Ghana College to Ghana Secondary School and is currently bearing the name Ghana Senior High School, Tamale.
    The school was established in January 1960 with a student population of seventy made up of only boys. The first girl to join them was Salamatu Alhassan a transferred student from Yaa Asantewaa Girls Secondary School. The school started with two streams of 35 students each. Today we have twelve streams. The student population is well over 2,486 with two thirds being girls.
    The school runs all the programmes: General Science, General Arts, Business, Agriculture and Vocational [Home Economics] except the Technical Programme.
    The school originally started with a teaching staff of 20. Today, the teaching staff is made up of 92 permanent teachers, some National Service personnel, some teachers on internship and also 45 Non-Teaching Staff.
    The school’s objective is to develop each child to the highest level that his/ her capabilities can carry him/her, using the very resourceful and hardworking staff in the school. It also aims at giving a holistic development of the students entrusted into our care. Therefore, we have students who have excelled in various fields of academia, Industry Commerce, Business, military, politics, Public and Civil Service etc.
    The school has Seven Houses;
    1. Gbanzaba - Named after Alhassan Gbanzaba the first graduate from the Northern Ghana.
    2. Cabral - Amilcar Cabral, Freedom fighter from Guinea Bissau
    3. Dakpema - The Land owners of Tamale.
    4. Purser - Mr. K. L. Purser, first Headmaster of the school
    5. Nkrumah - Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, First President of the Republic of Ghana
    6. Gbewaa - The founder of Dagbon Kindom, Naa Gbewaa
    7. Independence House - In honour of Ghana’s Independence
    8. Lordina House - In honour of Former First Lady

    GHANA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, TAMALE
    VISION
    To provide formal education to qualified Basic School Leavers, admit B.E.C.E. leavers and ensure they acquire the requisite qualification for further training in tertiary institutions to be productive by promoting socio economic development and by assisting to reduce poverty.
    MISSION
    To appoint and maintain qualified, competent and devoted teaching staff and also admit B.E.C.E. leavers who attain aggregate six (6) to thirty (30) and ensure that the latter are imbibed in quality academic, moral and disciplined training with academic qualifications given by selfless and devoted teachers, to enable them (students) have access to the tertiary institutions to be further trained to satisfy the manpower of mother Ghana.
