That's a fine plein air winter subject, Jon. Sorry the cold killed your camera batteries-I find keeping several spare batteries in an inside pocket and using them in rotation can really extend their usefulness on really cold days.

Yes - odorless mineral spirits like Gamsol work well, but just with handling and effects than turps. Hard to describe, you just have to experiment
