Thanks! This where lifesavers. 4 months ago 2 hurricanes hit Puerto Rico. One of them was Categorized as a #5, which is the worst in the scale. We had no electricity for 3 months and this cheap lights came very handy and useful during that time. I used them with solar battery banks. Such a lifesaver!

    A pre-emptive answer for a potential question :
No need to be concerned about getting an electric shock through touching this - USB supplies 5 Volts.
    - Also - it can be used either way up.

Gotta say that I miss the prior intro music already, haha. It really implied the idea of "you're about to see some AWESOME stuff!"
Fun little device though! Never really thought of needing a thing like this, but with the ubiquity of USB plugs now it makes sense.

I learned about this product from this video. The product is a solution to a problem I was solving. I was skeptical about the quality, but for less than five bucks for five of them, shipped to my door no less, I decided to take a gamble (using your US link). This item is extremely proficient in terms of function and it exceeded my expectations in build quality. This is a "cheap" product that SHOULD BE CHEAP. The architecture and execution on PCB completely exceeded my expectations: Clean reflow, recognizable components, quality surface-design and minimalistic execution. Bravo, to whomever is turning these out. Five out of five that I received are fully functional and all equal in build quality. Thank you Techmoan for reviewing.

I use these at work. But i now use a plastic encased and less bright version.
DO NOT LEAVE THESE ON FOR ANY EXTENDED PERIOD!!!!
They get extremely hot and will begin to melt your USB unit and are a genuine fire risk. Opt for the less bright version. Just as cheap more rugged and won't overheat.

    * Swallow it, and maybe meet a cute nurse at the hospital.
    * Plug it into a solar charger, and direct it at itself, for a free energy device.

+Techmoan i like the actual music of the new intro, but the last one had a very pleasing "in sync" effect. the music sounded almost like it spun up at the same rate as the tape spindle.
i noticed the spinning up had a higher lead-up to this gradual build of the new music, but it wasn't quite so.. affecting? for me.
which i think would probably just be a matter of trying different timings rather than anything inherent.

I bought some when I saw your video years ago and have been using them in different ways since. Once they provided light to passengers on a stranded train I was in and that was stopped for hours, used with a power bank. I’ve been using one in my kid’s bedroom for years. Today I built my own DIY reading light with a USB extension cable and nailed everything to the wall beside my bed. The fun never ends.

Put a diffuser on it and use it to help light you for webcam skypes.

    • @ArmadaAsesino

This is a great idea! Often with webcams it's the lack of lighting why the image looks so shitty. A USB light would be perfect for that.

Those LEDs are known as 'COB' LEDs, or Chip On Board. I have bought a couple of cheap penlight/inspection torches that use them and they are staggeringly bright. I don't know for sure but they must be one of the most efficient, if not, the most efficient LEDs on the market. I collect high powered, mostly handheld, flashlights that utilise 'Cree' emitters and they are very impressive but do give off a fair amount of heat, mainly due to being overdriven and the fact you are actually holding what comprises their heat sink. These little things hardly get above room temperature, very impressed.
I've spent the last week watching your videos and they are fascinating. I love your enthusiasm, knowledge and presentation, keep up the good work! Thanks. :)

That's actually spooky. I was thinking of looking for something like this only just today. I'm a musician, and when you first go on stage the lights in the venue are usually dimmed, and it can be sometimes quite difficult to see what you're putting on your instrument, turning on all the effects and doing all the checks that need to be done before starting to play. Something like this on a music stand would be totally ideal. MINT! I'll get one for all the guys in the band.

Just wanted to say that it must be written "an USB", but then I found out that the correct writing is indeed "a USB", because its about the sound (you-as-be) and not the vowel (u). Lesson learned :-|

Great for bias lighting..I purchased 10 of these USB lights on ebay....I had a couple of cheap USB port replicators...filled the empty USB ports with these USB lights....stuck the USB ports to the back of my flat screen tv with double sided foam tape, then linked them to an empty USB port on the TV...
The lights turn on when I power up the TV set...helps reduce eyestrain....works like a charm

Cool. These things are handy for home theatre and audio equipment. Plug it into the back of an AV receiver or a Blu-ray player facing toward the cable, and you can see what you're doing when you're moving stuff around and unplugging things, without needing a little torch, and freeing up both hands (I used a USB hub though, because I'm a wuss and feel paranoid about this stuff). I wouldn't leave it on indefinitely, though. They get pretty hot. I don't know what it is about LEDs, but I just love them. I have them everywhere in the house now, and even replaced all of the bulbs in my car, bar the headlights. So addictive. Imagine what your '70s audio gear's meters would look like with shiny new LEDs in them!
