Before Jason Lee was Earl on NBC, he was one of the top pro's of blind skateboards with Guy Mariano and Mark Gonzales. Then he started Stereo Skateboards with Chris Pastras, and now he's on Free Lunch with us. Here's two of the best guys in skateboarding.
Dude, agreed. I got to skate with him and the whole Blind team basically one day at the San Jose Warehouse complex. It was a private warehouse down on 10th St in San Jose and man....you would not believe who I got to skate there with. But Jason was a nice guy, he and Wade Speyer were jumping from the vert ramp off to the mini ramp extension...over a good 6 foot gap. All kinds of killer runs on the spine mini too. Great guys. They were baked out of their minds too, we all were...but they were better when baked. I was not.
💯 J. Lee and Dune are legends and were my favorite skaters, along with Carl Shipman and Ethan Fowler. I was a massive Stereo fan (loved early bLind and World too). I remember going to see Mallrats specifically to see Jason Lee’s acting debut and there being a bunch of other skaters in the audience; it was a pretty big deal at the time. Considering his personality via interviews, Video Days and A Visual Sound, etc. I was not surprised at all when he started acting.
My favorite skateboard company and skaters of all-time. A Visual Sound was a masterpiece (and Tin-Can Folklore was an excellent follow-up, especially the Tortoise-heavy soundtrack). Much love and respect. ❤️
These guys were actually a couple right? They interact like a married couple. Not business partners. They crossed arms so hard when they were asked if there's ever been a lover quarrel
fuck.....this is probably the best Free Lunch ever in the past two years....this is just amazing two legends right here. I wish there were more riders on this show of this caliber.
For the kiddies the Blind video Video Days was a game changer in skateboarding. That style of skateboarding and video making was the basis for all videos after it. I believe it reignited skateboarding after its transition from the late 80's.
My two skateboarding heroes talking about other skate legends. 🙌🏼 Their explanation of the Stereo aesthetic makes SO much sense and I understand even more why it spoke to me in such a massive way. Dune’s whole trip influenced a generation of skaters, making them value style and power over a solely technical approach. Today’s skateboarding needs a Stereo equivalent more than ever. I think companies like FA, Hockey and Polar are providing a mix between that and the World/bLind/101 aesthetic, but can’t think of any companies doing something as unique as Stereo in its mid-90s heyday. And YES, J. Lee does have the best 360 flip. He pioneered the trick and just happened to have an incredible, smooth style regardless. That’s why his 360 flips in Video Days and A Visual Sound still bear scrutiny.
he is haha ever played skate? He trains you, the dude still is pretty good used to be pro. He has done his part in the world of skateboarding, thanks Jason Lee, he doesnt have a lot of footage though that is up and public. but some of his parts are pretty damn awesome.
Mark Heintzman.. wow havent heard that name in years. Thanks Ride. Now I miss my Jason Lee cat in the hat board and the "Skinny little white boy rails" and the gizmo wheels.
sickest free lunch. jason lee invented tre flips. "dune" chris pastras' oldschool name talkin bout inspired skateboarding. so true...young or old all skateboards think alike!!! im 38, retired pro and still skating. but miniramps are more ergonomic nowadays! ;)
Fucking awesome interview. Love these interviews with the older guys, me being one and growing up watching these guys. Bones Brigade documentary was sick too.
Holt shit....the night Chris mentioned where they skated with Nautas, Blender, Gonz , etc.....I was also there! We skated near the Santa Ana Courthouse.
NJ I remember Jason Lee had a thing for Dr. Suess both him and Criss were awesome Mike V the barn yard deck 1st double tail board than the world industry boards, Natas, Christian H, Ed Templeton,Mark Gonz, Lance Mountain, MIke McGill just for the McTwist The whole Bones Brigade Animal Chin Jay Adams Olmar H. JINX, Gator, Rodney M. so many great skater I'm forgetting so many I should have never stopped skating even when I was in my 20's frm 9 when I got my first pro deck it was a powell skull and sword used off my cousin brice I have a unmarked Ray Barbey old school deck I loved hen they made blanks we'd get them and borrow the pro decks copy the shapes go home grab a jig saw router you made your own pro model that was cool you could play with the concave till you had the nose and tail you wanted I dont think they sell'em like that anymore all the shops closed down around here a lady tried to open one in maplewood nj for her sons and friends it bombed
and skaters used to always be punks...looked gay, wore neon clothes, had long bangs and got called names for being different. never gave a fuck. Bravo u guys. TO ALL SKATEBOARDERS, KEEP UP THE TRADITION!! :)
