Hey Paisteboy glad your bro got his sled running but now you guys need snow bad. I don't have a sled get but hopefully soon I hear the trail in ny are some of the best in the country.
Glad it helped. Check out the HD version. We had to do this again when my brother rand he sled out of oil. Top End Rebuild Again: PART 1 of 2, 2002 MXZ 700
it will smoke like crazy but it will help the break in and seating piston rings! dry starts not good for it! every 2stroke i rebuild i put oil in the crank so the first start is really lubed and i know there be no issues while breaking in mix the gas to for the break in its better to go through spark plugs then pistons! hope to see more videos man!
I have done a few of these and I found that the aftermarket c-clips never fit right. After a few of these being towed home I started using Ski-doo clips and wrist pin bearings (cage less). Never had any issues after that.
seems it's same plugs with or without dpm ignition too ! I found a big difference in fuel mileage and throttle response when I switched to these plugs few years ago . the previous owner had the br9es in it when I got it !
@paisteboy. Hey man got some pretty good news!!! Only 1 of my pistons blew lol....dug in deeper and found out that piston rod bearing blew and thats what made her go...the cylinder is in PERFECT shape...altho i forgoy to make a vid of it lol....wanted to see what u or ur brother would suggest about breaking the new rings in and such...thank u for all YOUR vids their a ton of help
Good ideas. As long as my brother plans on riding again this year we'll have to do another rebuild video. Knowing my brother it will be in November just before the snow hits. Last minute. Thanks for watching.
@KrankieV2 I've been thinking about that for a while. Maybe on my sled. I just wiped the sludge off of the one rave that we removed from the bad cylinder before we reinstalled it on the new cylinder.
Yea i donno if a flush will cut it......1200 on a new engine or 2 hours of work and a 20 gasket!!! glue the gasket with grey permatex and well u have it apart buy a manual online for 7 bucks and read up on ring end gap if u didnt check this befor installing your rings on your pistons u will be taking a big risk on your engine blowing up again this is coming right from the horses mouth and once that wench clicks stop ,there is a bolt pattern to fallow for the head too, i hope this helps
holy shit you guy should have put 2cycle oil on the piston%cylinders and put it in both sides of the crank so on the first start its well lubed and it helps in the break in !
So you don't need ring compressor to install the cylinders over the piston? My rings seem very stiff to compress by hand. And also I had a ton of trouble installing the C-clips on the wrist pin but you had no problem at all.
@paisteboy it appears that you can't really see how dirty the valves are till you get them almost totally apart. Also it looks like if you've got a clean work area, you have nothing to worry about taking them apart. they're not awfully complicated.
No it wasn't bored out. We replaced the damaged cylinder and added new pistons and rings. It only got riddin 20 miles last year because of the lack of snow, but it ran great. Thanks for watching.
@KrankieV2 Yeah, I was just talking about the blade looking end. I figure the dirtier that piece the dirtier it is on the inside. It really doesn't seam like it's that hard. It's just that if you loose a part or forget what order everything goes back in then you're screwed. That's what we have video cameras for, right.
@captain18088 I'm glad we fixed my brother's sled too. We haven't had squat for snow yet but the trails don't even open here for a couple of weeks. The trails in my local area aren't that great unless we get a good amount of snow but there are some really nice trails in the state. Thanks for watching.
@MrYoungmoney2140 Wow! You are so lucky. I can't believe you didn't damage the cylinder. What I would recommend since you have to tear it appart anyway, would be to change the other 2 piston rod bearings while you're in there. That would suck if it happened again. It's kind of important that all cyclinders compression is very close to one another so maybe new rings all the way around too. As far as break in not 100 percent sure but maybe take it easy for the first few hundred miles.
@TheTraxxasdriver I don't if it's because of the RER reverse or it's a feature starting on the2002 sleds, but it beeps a few times after you start it and beeps continuously when put into reverse. I have a 2000 MXZ 700 and it doesn't beep at all. Thanks for watching.
I guess we got lucky then. It's working great. Definately should have lube the cylinders up though. I even mention that as my brother is installing the first ctlinder. Thanks for watching.
@paisteboy i know you're supposed to take them all apart and clean them thoroughly inside like every 1,000 miles or so but i have never seen one taken apart.. there is more to it than wiping it off, i was hoping that you knew more about them than I do
@Blazinthetrails350 Believe me, it's not knocking. It may be something in the video sound because it sounded like a brand new sled in person. Thanks for watching.
We're not experts and didn't claim to be, but It would have lasted if my brother hadn't let it run out of oil. lol. I never say "how to" in my video titles it's more like "how I or How we" since we are not professional mechanics. Good luck.
@jbrooks1976 Yeah, Thanks for hanging in there. My brother changed jobs after the motor blew and he didn't see any point in doing it in July, so we just did it over this past weekend. Thanks for watching.
hey it's Mike . I looked again on skidoo website and my parts guy also looked for me . 2002 mxz takes spark plug . BR9 ECS - 5 unless it's. a 500 cc then it takes br9es . 600 700 800.all take BR9ECS -5 the -5 means it's pre gapped at .050 as you are not to gap these plugs yourself they can break off the top if you do and do damage .
Well I only noticed the fuel mileage because I was riding with a buddy that had a Polaris ultra 700 triple , and with the br9es plugs I was about same power and mileage as him .we were both putting in about same amount of fuel each time we filled up . But after I switched plugs. I found I was putting in about 3 dollars less than him when he put in $21.00 , I was around 18 . And my sled seemed to have more snap to it too.
You been out much this year ? We have very little snow here , central Ontario . Most trails are red and yellow . (closed ,or limited) have to go about 6 hours north or more to get any decent trails to ride on !
+michael compton The season has sucked here in my local area too. We got blasted last night and it's still coming down hard now all day and I took the day off to go riding but got a couple things holding me up right now. We got over a foot of new snow and it's still snowing good. All trails are open for the first time this season. I just wish that they would declare it a state of emergency, then I could just right my sled right down the road.
@MotorHeadGreg I'm not a mechanic so I don't want to give advice on that. There seems to be some controversy on that subject too. Also this is my brothers sled and I haven't had to actually deal with this situation myself with a snowmobile. I would follow a snowmobile mechanics advice. Thanks for watching.
@paisteboy ya i knew i should of changed them but 175 bucks apiece for pistons...ouch lol...but the other 2 pistons and rings were in great shape....did a compressiin test and got 155-159 for all 3 which hopefully is good? Took her out today for awhile and grannied her seems to be running good..over summer im gonna do a complete rebuild
How long did this whole operation take ? from a french guy from where ski-doo was born you were right on the prenouncement on bombardier ! Great Video !
Oh i know..this sucks ...been riding a lot..we got snow lol...heard like a crackling sound and then lost power figured i blew a belt but i took the plugs out and found out that the 2nd piston...its a tripple..actually cracked..idk from what but crazy season already
u should have raised the front of the sled up 11/2 foot so all the air in the coolant will come up so you dont get a air bubble in the system and over heat!
You seem to be very knowledgeable. I'm more like these guy's, I know enough to be dangerous. I did notice the gasket floating around also and didn't like the looks of that. So you are saying to use gasket maker to glue it in place? You also mentioned internal leakage, do you think the gasket could get out of place enough that coolant will leak to the bottom end? I blew a bottom end once due to antifreeze and lack of knowledge. Thanks
also i noticed in this video (not really a big deal) you didn't oil the cylinder it would give more compression reading if you had still tho 180 is very good
@paisteboy I know a snowmobile repair expert. I'm going to talk to him about cleaning the R.A.V.E. valves some time soon, and when I do it, I will most definitely make a video, as I have yet to find one!
i donno if i will last, u had bent the clips putting them in the pistons, u didnt check ring end gap this is vary important to a freash top end and u did not glue the base gasket so u could have internal leaking and not know till booooooom again
@MrYoungmoney2140 That was fast. I was sending you a PM and you had already replied. Ok since you've got er done and the compression seams good just take it easy for a while and you should be good for a while. Make a vid.
Yeah the rings went in the cylinders pretty easy and the wrist pin C-clip can be difficult but the way we did it we found to be the easiest. Thanks for watching.
Get snap on I'm 12 and I use snap on and I put that engine in a rev chassis and its was heat sold it cause it was a pain no reverse or electric start but I'm 12 and I rebuild dirtbikes and snomobiles the right way and hav special snap on tools for everything
@paisteboy i did forget to put some oil in the gas..lol..but shes running like a champ....after i got it all replaced i kinda slapped myself for not doing the other 2 cylinders...but this summer il tackle it...i will take a vid tomorrow of her .
+Mrmoparrr. Yeah. This sucks. Hopefully it turns back around quickly so we can start riding locally. First we had snow but the trails weren't open yet. Then they open and the snowfall melts. Can't win.

Hey Paisteboy glad your bro got his sled running but now you guys need snow bad. I don't have a sled get but hopefully soon I hear the trail in ny are some of the best in the country.
You should ,put some snowmobile oil on those Pistons. Before you put the Cylinders on.

Too bad. You have to make a video of it though. It's not to late to fix it and still get some riding in if you have snow.

According to the service manual, it says to use Loctite 518 on the base gasket. Did you do that? I didn't to mine.
Yeah. You're right. So far so good though.
@MotorHeadGreg
I'm not a mechanic so I don't want to give advice on that. There seems to be some controversy on that subject too. Also this is my brothers sled and I haven't had to actually deal with this situation myself with a snowmobile. I would follow a snowmobile mechanics advice. Thanks for watching.

No, we didn't use Loctite 518 on the base gasket. No problems since this rebuild at this point. Thanks for watching.
I'm sure you bought all those extremely expensive high quality specialty snap on tools with your own money too.
Good points. Thanks for watching.

Yes.
how do u make ur sled beep?
