It is the fate of Revenge Epics to be gargantuan, apparently. This was a really interesting break down, Andrew. Would love to see more videos like this on the channel! I did enjoy the breakdown of Shivers, but I'm thinking that it might play a role later in the series? I'll have to wait and see. Those audiobook details are really interesting - I would definitely have wanted him to NOT use the voices as a "giveaway".
I am glad you liked it!! I will definitely look to talk more about books and other spoiler videos in the future! I had a lot of fun with this video. The audiobook choice is certainly a hard one for me to pin down how I feel about it.
Great video Andrew! I liked BSC but I felt like it did get bloated towards the end, especially part 6. I think The Heroes is where Abercrombie hits another level.
Thanks RJ! I have heard great things about the Heroes. I’m definitely continuing First Law. I read the inside flap of the book and my interest went through the roof.
You already know my thoughts, Andrew! Although I enjoyed the book more than you, you did such a thorough job explaining why certain things didn’t appeal to you. I always enjoy hearing your thoughts so much! ☺️
As much as I loved the book it's really refreshing on hearing a critique on the book. You really nailed your points of what didn't mesh with you and by that, I get a deeper understanding of what varied perspectives bring to the table regarding the series that ain't 'cause I dont like grimdark etc etc'... Cause you know, The First Law is like the untouched golden child in the fantasy scene. Loved the video, cheers!
I so agree with all you said here. I kept hearing that this was the best FL standalone but it took me forever to read and put me in a slump. The Heroes is so much better. Haven't read Red Country yet.
Interesting thoughts. I didn't love this book as much as everyone else seems to, but it was still solid IMO. I forgot a lot of the specifics of some of the characters from LaoK too. I actually didn't like Monza too much. I also was fairly confident that Cosca was alive. I do love the revengeception in part 6 😂
Probably my number one critique of Joe (who i love) is his heavy handedness. Not quite the right word. What's the antonym of subtlety? A little too much with some stuff; the repetition, the obvious "reveals", plot armour, walking off head injuries, some of the cameos... Things tighten up in the new trilogy. He is still improving.
Hi 👋 I like the way u review books. How far are u in blood song by Anthony Ryan??? I’m still enjoying reading blood song.... happy weekend reading to you! 📖🍁🎬😊
I personally prefer The Heroes over Best Served Cold the more time has gone on, granted that's largely because I think Heroes has the stronger 3rd Act of the two. Love the cast of both pretty much equally.
I agree with a lot here but I also disagree. I actually think shivers was my favourite character in the book and as weird as it sounds, I didn’t mind the way that the incest was handled in this book. The reason I say that is because it’s never actually confirmed. It’s just something Carlot Dan Eider brings up. And we know she doesn’t like Monza. So I assumed it was just a form of slander. But Monza also weirdly never denied it either, even when confronted by shivers. She just gets all defensive. So idk I like that it’s kind of up in the air. I also liked shivers because of how him and Monza end up. Monza starts off so rageful and angry and is willing to kill the world for revenge, meanwhile shivers just wants to be a better man. By the end tho Monza has sort of pulled back a bit and has become more remorseful and merciful, while shivers has given up on becoming a better man completely. He’s broken. In the next book too, the heros he’s pretty gnarly. If you go from last argument of kings straight to the heros you’d be like damn bro what happened to shivers 😂
I am super glad you liked it! You also raise a lot of good points. The role reversal between Monza and Shivers is super interesting and not something I remembered until you said something. It is a nice touch though
Thanks Larry! I really Loved the first 2 parts of the book. I didnt have any real compalints there. It was as the book progessed that it just wore me down.
@@AndrewsWizardlyReads I thought I was going to love it because I hadn't heard a single person say anything negative about the series until after I read and was disappointed with the first book. Then I started to find people that weren't fans of the series.
My thoughts are almost exactly described by you here. The additional bit I will add regarding the "legacy characters" is that none of Logen's old crew are here, but we get so many mentions of Rudd Threetrees, Black Dow, Harding Grim etc that you'd be forgiven for thinking they are actual characters from the book. It's like it's desperate to link you to the First Law trilogy, and it's just not necessary.
Here's my ranking of the first law books 1. A little hatred 2. Best served cold 3. The trouble with peace 4. Red country 5. Before they are hanged 6. the blade itself 7. The last argument of kings 8. The hero's
I haven’t read Age of Madness yet so my ranking isn’t as impressive. 1.Before they are hanged 2. The blade itself 3. Best served cold 4. Last argument of kings.

I loved all the stuff you citicised lol. The more revenge, the better.
Lmao 🤣. That’s totally fair Klaus :). I really loved the concept and the first 2 parts are superb.

Thank you Claudio! I am glad you enjoyed the video. I hoping to read the heroes in a couple months. I have heard nothing but great things about it.
This is the kind of review and critique I love. It is very helpful to me as an author on what to avoid and what to capitalize on.
Thanks!!! I am glad you enjoyed it :)
I so agree with all you said here. I kept hearing that this was the best FL standalone but it took me forever to read and put me in a slump. The Heroes is so much better. Haven't read Red Country yet.

I do love the revengeception in part 6 😂
Thanks man! It was a good book for sure. I do think it missed the mark of being a fantastic though. Revengeception was crazy lol so much revenge.
"I enjoyed the book....mostly" That's like "I like you...BUT"
Lmao 🤣 I know! I know!

I absolutely love best served cold I read it a few months ago for the first time 💖I haven't gotten wisdom of crowds yet from the library
I really enjoyed the start of BSC. The first two parts are amazing. It’s when I got to part 3 that I stared having issues with it.

I am currently 20% into the book. I really enjoying the story!!!! Happy reading to you Safina.

You could use the use of a catchphrase to set the theme of a chapter as a drinking game. Every time the phrase is repeated, take a drink. 🍸 🧉
Lol, the last time I played a drinking game things went poorly.

Strange how people either love BSC & dislike Heroes or vice versa, I'm in the latter group, go figure!
