      Listening to your FFI and SFI Playlist is slowly helping my anxiety. I understand you're not a doctor but as someone who's done research I would love your opinion. Long story short: im 25. my partner cheated on me in June causing major issues to my sleeping habits such as anxiety attacks preventing sleep leading to insomnia and then self fulfilling prophecy. Its now October. After a triggering episode last Thursday I've endured immense waves of anxiety feeding insomnia leading to fragmented sleep. As I type this I'm awake after not being able to sleep at ALL. Is this rapid worsening insomnia SFI or FFI or am I just going through a crummy period in my life? Note: My grandfather passed away in 2016 at age 67 of CJD and not a single main issue of his was sleep save for when he finally went into a coma. Any advice would be sincerely appreciated

      Hi Roman,
      To me, anyone who has the capacity to imagine that they may have SFI is functioning at at level that would be impossible for someone with symptomatic SFI… hang in there and glad the content has been helpful

      @@thesleepcoachschool8192 Hello Daniel,
      Thank you so much for the fast reply. I ended up going to the ER due to worsening anxiety attacks and a deteriorating mental state. Not to get too personal but my anxiety got so bad I had convinced myself I was dying whilst severely sleep deprived, dealing with feelings of confusion and such thinking my mental facilities were decaying in real time. They ran a chest xray and a CT and multiple blood work done and came to the conclusion that I was physically fine, and then proceeded to give me 2mg of Antivan to help me relax. I was unable to sleep immediately but it seemed to help bring me out of this weird stupor I was in. They told me if I was still unable to sleep to please come back the next day. I went home, took a warm relaxing shower, put something calm on the TV, ate some food, popped 5mg melatonin and let the two meds work. Instead of my previous sleep where it was fragmented /I felt I was awake the whole time, I woke up. I have no memory of any dreams but this time I was positive I actually slept. Still feel a little daze and confused and my balance seems to be not the best but I'm sincerely hoping it'll go away as the day progresses.

      But when someone is ready, they’ll find us 😊

    I love this!! So good. I feel like when we have the surfers window idea, we are focused so much on the time and this itself puts us into a hyperaroused state. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy and we keep acquiring evidence for it the less and less we find easeful sleep after the window. Thank you!!

    This is me, if I don’t fall asleep before midnight forget it. I try not to look at the time. But you kinda get a sense of time the longer u lay there in bed. There’s been the rare occasion I fell asleep after midnight. My sleepy feeling almost never appears after midnight thou.

    This is the reason why sleep restriction is so difficult: there is so much pressure to fall asleep at a certain time. I used to be very sleepy on the couch but as soon as my sleep window started sleepiness had disappeared.

      @@thesleepcoachschool8192 This is exactly my problem when I do sleep restriction. I’m very sleepy and have to fight against the sleepiness before the prescribed bedtime but as soon as the sleep time started I’m wide awake. Now I am trying open sleep window with flexible bedtime and strict waking time. I don’t look at the watch after 10pm and go to sleep when I feel sleepy and it’s time. But then I always wake up earlier, around 5am. My sleep period is 5-5.5 hours and I can’t extend it more. What’s your suggestion in my case?

    Aloha Daniel,
    First of all thank you so much for sharing your infinite insomnia knowledge! You are an answer to many prayers. I recently found your channel after dealing with sudden sleep struggles over the last couple of months. Wow, just hearing other people's relatable stories and videos have brought me so much peace of mind within a couple of days. This surfer window is exactly what I've been dealing with...if I'm not asleep before 11 I only sleep for a couple hours at sunrise. Despite watching this last night I still had the same issue. The difference is it didn't bother me as much knowing what was happening. I'm not letting the sleeplessness spiral into anxiety and depression like it has in the past. This is the first morning I didn't wake up and start crying about lack of sleep! Of course I'd prefer to sleep well again 🤣 and am really considering signing up for your app. The information on your site and your compassionate approach has been immensely helpful. Thank you!
    Brittany

    What about accupunture/TCM and other areas that claim that emotions and organs can get flared up during specific time frames and wake you up?

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192
      @thesleepcoachschool8192  3 місяці тому

      Our way of looking at this is actually very similar to mainstream psychology and the cognitive model: emotions are produced by thoughts. Unless we habitually think of something that makes us feel a certain way at a certain time, a time itself won’t make us feel any predictable way. Similarly, although many organs have a circadian rhythm to their functions, this in itself has little impact on sleep.

    This is literally me. I remember those times when I didn't used to look at the clock at all 😂 aah. I hope that can be me again some day. This surfer's window is really messing with me especially if happen to go out. Not even super late but if i don't have like 2 hours of no pressure wind down I could get hyper-aroused if I'm not very tired :/ I may have to keep my sleep restricted more until i build up the confidence... if I'm not super sleepy by my 'sleep time' It becomes harder.. I can't just chill normally without feeling pressure to get sleepy...

    Hello Daniel. So does are microbiome have an impact on sleep? Leaky gut? Because %90 of our seretonin is produced in our gut right? If we do not have enough of it due to an imbalance then it can interrupt sleep.

    Hi Daniel, I think what you are saying here is great, but the reality is somehow one would have to completely disregard time when one was feeling time is of the essence because the wave is rapidly approaching, and actually thinking about it, this is certainly an issue with me because many times I get myself in a hurry to go to bed, brushing teeth, etc, because I know the wave is coming and many times I miss it which does result in poor sleep(sometimes not, though). But thanks for bringing this to light. I can see how this would work if I didn’t know what time it was, or also very important, sometimes I ‘push’ myself past a place where I am almost too tired-trying to get as much out of every day I can, which is crazy, I know. This is insightful!

    Thanks for the great tips Daniel, your work has been immensely useful for me! I have two questions I'd be super grateful for some help on:
    1. Any advice on how to approach and accept sleeplessness with a newborn? Our first child will be born very soon, and I'm getting a little anxious about the stories I hear from new parents about lack of sleep, and am thinking of how this might resurface my past issues with sleeplessness.
    2. Any tips for how to deal with a snoring partner? I know from past videos sleeping on the couch is something you advise against, but am not sure what to do when it gets particularly loud. Thanks!

    Hi Daniel, hope you are doing well.
    I am in a state of confusion and was hoping to gain a little bit of clarity.
    My sleep has improved and things were going great until a week ago, I had a speedbump which caused hyperarousal and then I caught a cold and somehow lost my sense of smell, now I can't stop stressing about my smell and it's giving me alot of hyperarousal and I feel like it's affecting my sleep. I feel when I go to bed all I can think about is my sense of smell and how that is stressing me and causing hyperarousal and then I start thinking about how all of this is making me struggle to sleep. I feel like I am in some sort of vicious cycle, where my sense of smell is on my mind all the time and my brain is telling me because it's on my mind I won't sleep.
    I know that I should probably just allow my self to stress if I need to because trying to stop will probably cause more struggle.
    But I am really struggling with applying this.
    I think my question is how do I deal with stresses in life eg. My sense of smell being gone without worrying about whether it will affect my sleep.
    Looking forward to your response.

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192
      @thesleepcoachschool8192  Рік тому

      Hi Leha,
      Sorry about the struggles but glad you’re here. I wish I could remember who but I’ve heard this before, the loss of smell. And I think what helps is to look at meaning, we could lose our sense of smell and would not be very worried if we thought “of course, I’m having a cold so that’s why”, but when we think it means that something is wrong, that’s when it can really scare us.
      Seeing that it’s not the circumstances but our inner narrative about the circumstances that dictates how we feel, this can help much

    hello daniel ! found your videos not that long ago, i have been struggling with insomnia for a little bit less than month , (started one random day with 0 sleep and then anxiety and hyper arousal fuelled it up obviously and i get a lot of 0-3 hours sleep days ( i did have insomnia for some months 4 years ago after coming out some medication). reading your first book and watching your videos help me a lot ! i got some good stretches of good sleep but now im back again on very poor sleep. strangely enough i dont really feel extremely tired, but i do feel anxious, i still go on about my days, go dirt biking , go work, go run, walk the dog, watch tv. one thing that im struggling with is not feeling frustrated in bed when not sleeping. ive tried listening to podcasts or stuff like that but i tend to close it off after 30 minutes and become frustrated again in bed. would it be a good idea for me to maybe get out the bed and listen to podcasts/watch tv etc/ ? havent tried this one yet as getting out seem strange to me.

    Hi Daniel. I have a question- sometimes I will have a speed bump when I'm very tired. I'll be falling asleep but wake up from hyperarousal. But I'm still groggy and tired, just not able to fall asleep, and I don't feel like watching any tv either. In this scenario, should I force myself to watch something, or can I keep trying to sleep even though I keep waking?

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192
      @thesleepcoachschool8192  Рік тому

      Hi Jenny,
      I’d say it’s the path of least resistance that helps so much. Befriending wakefulness is anything that isn’t trying to force sleep, and if we force ourselves to watch tv so that we no longer are afraid so that we sleep… we are trying to force sleep.
      On the other hand, when we do whatever feel easier, resting, listening to a podcast, cleaning, whatever is the opposite of trying to force sleep… that really helps 🙂
