The New Evangelicals exists to support those who are tired of how evangelical church has been done before and want to see an authentic faith lived out with Jesus at the center. On this channel, you'll see videos from our founder Tim Whitaker and our incredible guests as they react and respond biblically to topics such as Christian Nationalism, church hurt, terrible Christian movies, bad conservative Christian takes, and MUCH more!
We are committed to building a caring community that emulates the ways of Jesus by reclaiming the evangelical tradition and embracing values that build a better way forward. If you’ve been marginalized by your faith, you are welcome here. We’ve built an empathetic and inclusive space that encourages authentic conversations, connections and faith. Whether you consider yourself a Christian, an exvangelical, someone who's questioning your faith, or someone who's left the faith entirely, you are welcome here!

The first time I saw Shane speak was at Willow Creek in 2002 (wasn’t main service). He spoke against the war in Iraq and Bush and I remember at the time (I was like 15) being like “oh shit, I can’t believe he’s actually saying this stuff in church.” I read Irresistible Revolution in college and have been so grateful for Shane and what he brings to the convo ever since. Awesome interview.
You know what I think after listening to this whole talk? I think that "deconstruction" is the actual "revival" I have been hearing evangelical preachers "prophesy" about since I was a kid. I never fully understood this term or what it meant, but heard them say it all the time. Now that I am older, I realize that a lot of us who deconstructed/are deconstructing feel almost as if we are awakening to the realization that we were in the ones in the dark. It feels a lot like Plato's Allegory of the Cave for me. I just know that there is absolutely no going back.
Thank you for having the courage to release this on Memorial Day.
Because today Christians around the US are celebrating the countless mass murders committed by the US Military around the globe.
They're remembering the deaths of the victimizers while completely ignoring the deaths of the victims.
Then they claim that it was necessary to bomb kids in Cambodia, starve families in Yemen, and topple elected governments in Nicaragua, etc. "to protect our freedom".
Let's take the opportunity of Memorial Day to grieve those lost on all sides, repent, and follow the peaceable way of Jesus.
What a horrible comment. Pray for the souls of the dead.
...honoring fallen individual soldiers, not the policymakers who may have made mistakes in the fog of war. Get a grip - my father served in Europe, was at Normandy. Do you wish to condemn my father?
Thank you for your reflection. Good words!
@@TheParadoxDestroyer Did he love his enemies or kill them?
How does one love their enemies while simultaneously making preparations to kill them?
@@AaronGardner98 you assume that God does not give people the permission to act in self defense, to protect their lives, not only on an individual level but also as societies and groups. Were the Allies wrong for standing up to the Nazis or should everyone have just succumbed to the evil?
What a fantastic conversation. This is what I would call Christ centered thought as opposed to what my many years in the white evangelical church exposed me to.
amen!!!
I also read Irresistible Revolution in high school! It got passed around my friend group and I grew up super conservative!
Thank you for this great video.
Love the studio setting! Thank you Tim and Shane for reminding me of what inspires me about Jesus and his teachings. It gives me hope for a Christian faith being actually something I could stand by with confidence.
I totally agree!!! I left this conversation inspired and ready to do something to make the world a better place. Always love hearing Shane’s perspective.
Do you all have a reading list, by any chance? I don't use facebook, so I didn't check there, but figured asking here would be good :)
Across the issues, Biden is so much better than Donald Trump. It really isn't close.
You really should listen to what Shane says on the 46-47th minute of the video
Tim, I agree with much of this but, you should read the first 11 chapters of Romans then interpret Romans 12:1-2 in its proper context
Where did this preaching go? This is a Christian I could commune with
I really love the new look! And the window with the tree in the background is just amazing.
Mahalo for the message today, guys! If there was a better way folks like yourselves can utilize your privilege + platform here, I couldn’t name it. 💪🏾 Shane, what a phenomenal guest you were!
I’ve been a fan of Shane’s work since I first read Irresistible Revolution when I was around 14. Great conversation. I kept waiting for one of you to bring RFK Jr into the convo during the two-party talk. What are your thoughts on him as a real possibility?
God bless you! 🕊️
I haven't heard anything from Claiborne in years. I always admired his work. I look forward to listening.
I spent a year on the streets. Homeless and psychotic nearly starving to death on the streets of San Diego. Then I lived for 11 years in a home for the mentally disabled. That's where I learned my theology. Also where Yeshua preached His. While living in the board and care home I was ordained an Elder in the COGIC. One of the very rare white Elders. Where I spent 25 years. Submitted to black leadership. I have experienced a complete humiliation.
Five stars
My enemy is the capitalist paradigm. The modern version of the love of money. It is the Camel in the tent.
Interesting that a Hillsdale College ad on citizenship in America and anti-wokeness played in the middle of this warning of the danger that these ideas poses to America’s well being.
Justice is what ends the suffering. And justice is not always nonviolent.
Alright alright alright, I'm happy to sub, but I need the podcast because I drive for work and yt just isn't good for that. Thanks for what you do. I love it and am here for it!
the podcast isn't going anywhere :)
Grats dude! Godspeed!

How to live amongst white evangelicals without really trying
When you live amongst people whose values and ideals are the antithesis of your own, you have to make certain kinds of adaptations. You also sometimes have to learn a new language. The purpose of this article is to help those of you stuck in communities that pitch you far out of your element. If you find yourself surrounded by white evangelicals, there is no reason to panic. This article is intended to help you cope. This article is written to help anyone who is not a white Evangelical to live comfortably in a community filled with them. Maybe not comfortably. But at least how to survive.
We will review the new language and its meaning. We will also point out some aspects of their culture that may have escaped you. Clarification of those aspects may help make the community more understandable to you. You won’t ever feel you’re part of the community because they don’t want you to be. Also, would you really want to be part of theirs? I doubt it. However, at least the community won’t feel so foreign to you.
We will start off by putting to rest certain stereotypes. For example, it’s not true that a child can’t get a decent education in a community filled with white evangelicals. True, if you value education, this may be a very challenging feat. However, it is not impossible. Just because they are dumb does not mean your child has to be.
Your child can be educated, even if the rest of community is filled with white evangelicals. In fact, your child does not even have to attend, the local “Clasping Hands High School “. Because the fairy tales learned in those schools will be of little use to your child, your child’s time might be better served by enrolling your child in a public school that clearly differentiates fairy tales from facts, history, and science. It is important to note the risk, however. Your child will still be living amongst people who confuse their fairy tales with facts, science, and history. But at least your child will not have incorporated that confusion into their value system. There’s something to be said for avoiding that... A lot to be said for that.
Key is ensuring your children do not adopt the prevailing values of the community. Then, when free to leave the community for college, they will learn that "dumb" is not as valued elsewhere as it is in the white evangelical community. There's a lot to be said about that!
So, is it wrong to provide weapons to Ukraine to help them defend themselves against an extremely crazy man?
Yes. Please follow this line of thinking to its end result. What if Putin completely took over Ukraine? What would that change when it came to Christian faith? Could it even instill a greater opportunity for people to live into the way of Jesus?
It’s a worthwhile thought experiment, at least. Nonviolent action has just as much impact as violent action, in many cases.
No, I don't believe Jesus would say that people should lay down their lives to a genocidal maniac for nothing. They are standing up to pure evil.
@@AaronGardner98you think Putler will stop with taking over Ukraine? How cute. This guy has an agenda which is to rebuilt the soviet empire under his rule. He's been waging war since he's in office. And he came into office by bombing his own population and blaming it on Chechnya.
It is different, yes. Ukrainian is defending itself, Israel is not.
I did follow his line of thinking and admire his attempt to follow Christ. Still, the idea of taking Jesus's teaching literally about anything is not a good idea. He uses alot of picture language. There are no one eyed fundamentalist baptists because even they know better. Jesus teachings make you think, but shouldn't be followed literally by those in goverment or anyone. Think of the women being raped, we would respond with violence to stop it. There are tyrants in the world who do not value rights. @@AaronGardner98
American mythology as a diluted rendition of the “greatest purveyor of violence” blew me away.
Such insightful and imperative content for the mind + spirit as ever, Tim!
