englisch und deutsch sind "schwester sprachen"... und ich spreche beide Oomph zu verdanken! english and german are "sister languages"... and i speak both thanks to Oopmh!
The only reason English is considered truly harder than other languages is because it doesn't have a phonetic orthography. But considering just the spoken language or if the written form were phonetic, English has many things that are more simplified in comparison to other languages when considering grammatical cases, verb conjugations, etc. Many irregularities exist in all languages. The most commonly used verbs in many languages have irregular forms. Lang's have many idioms, dialects, etc.
Honestly, if it weren't for conflicting "noun genders" learning German would be pretty easy. I have always spoken English, and my mom and younger sister can only speak English (but my sister is trying to learn Japanese, which is pretty awesome). I've learned Spanish and can speak fluently, but I never really took interest in it because I had a hard time connecting to it. In my opinion, if you can speak English + another language, every language you learn after is much easier. I've started teaching myself German (because I LOVE the German rock scene) and Korean because Kpop and Kdramas are very interesting. And from there, if you work hard, it gets easier :))) If you want to learn another language, just submerge yourself in it! Want to learn Korean? Watch Kdramas! Want to learn Spanish? Try Telenovelas! Want to learn Japanese? HELLO!? ANIME!!! It's probably impossible to learn entirely that way, but the best way to get started is to be familiar with it. Just being able to distinguish one word from another (even if you don't know the meaning) is the first step!! Good luck :)
TheMightyKawama like I said, it's simply a way to become familiar with the language. It's impossible to learn entirely, but it is a great way to kinda take a "crash course"
I've been listening to German rock music since freshman year (over a decade lol) and I've been slowly teaching myself German. My ignorant ass (not fully bio) fam tried to ask if I was a Nazi for learning a language that's "not useful" instead of caring that its my heritage. @MistiBear101 Spanish is similar to German because of loan words in trade, the fact that Latin has a bit of influence on German as on all Western European languages, both of your countries at one point were ruled by Gothic tribes which helped shape both languages, and because of similarities in Indo-European languages overall.
As far as I know its German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish mostly a latin language but since it's structure is Germanic it is a Germanic language. Example: Adjective then noun(Fat cat)(Germanic) noun then adjective(Cat fat)(Latin).
you are correct english is the hardest language to learn. The proof is in our schools. Schools in america teach english for 12 years and in other schools around the world it takes (and i'm not sure on this but) 8 to 9 years in in school to master there language. (pardon my miss spells I have just woken up and cannot think straight)
@XrockerXmosherX Agreed. I'm actually learning my English grammar much better than before because I'm trying to apply the grammar from german to english. XD So far it's worked!
Maybe because they learned only English, for example Serbian have 7 grammatical cases, we only don't have ablative. This means that one noun in Serbian may have 14 forms.
@XrockerXmosherX English retains many archaic Germanic features which modern German lost. Our vowels are more similar to Dark Age German, and we still use the W consonant sound. On the other hand, we've almost entirely lost the declension of nouns, with "whom" being an ever-more-endangered remnant of the once rich system. Also, for the past five hundred years or so intellectual types have tried very hard to make English into a Latin Language. Show your Saxon Pride- split an infinitive today!
Pronunciation doesn't automatically make a language difficult to learn. You would think that French is extremely difficult with the difference between pronunciation and writing, but then comes the grammar and lowers the difficulty. Sure, pronunciation is very important, but so is grammar. Hearing a word once helps a lot when pronouncing it, but grammar takes "a little" more than that.
@lan33er that's not what I meant. But a lot of people'd love to learn a language because of the things you mentioned, but simply can't find anyone teaching them. (btw I never thought that you'd have to understand what they're singing even if they sound cool.. same with me and japanese rock ^^)
English has 70-92, plus several different words that mean the same thing and words that sound the same but are spelled differently and mean different things. As for the Tuyuca thing, it all depends on which list you're looking at. I looked at four charts, it was not listed on three and on the other it was ranked 3rd.
@MiracleofaSong The same thing happened to me. I tried for 3 years to learn spanish and all I could do is say silly sentences. At the time i was listening to Rammstein and then discovered Oomph! a few years ago and am now taking German in college and I've already learned more German from listening to those 2 bands then I did for 3 years of spanish class.
@TakiroChan well the thing is i am learning it cause if i want to know what they saying because they sound cool and if they sound cool imagin what they are saying
@XrockerXmosherX youre right the angel (cause of them england) and sachsen came to england and were its inhabitants the juten had something to do with it too
@nicklucy94 All European languages excluding Finnish, Estonia, Basque, Saami and Hungarian are Indo-European and English has twice as many Germanic words than it does Latin that are used by the average English speaker, excluding advanced scientific terminology, etc.. You can call English a Hybrid but most definitely not a Romantic language.
@XrockerXmosherX English isn't just a Germanic language its an Indo-Europe language that comes more from Latin. there are more Latin words in English than German.
Bem, eu sou brasileira. Português não é difícil para quem fala línguas latinas, mas para pessoas acostumadas com línguas germânicas e de outras origens etc. torna-se complicado não só por causa da gramática mas principalmente por causa da pronúncia e dos diversos sentidos que, às vezes, 1 só palavra pode apresentar. Eu sou boa em português, é uma das minhas matérias preferidas, mas noto que as regras gramaticais são bem complexa. Mas te admiro, pq eu sou PÉSSIMA em espanhol! Kkkkkkk
@XrockerXmosherX Saying English is derived from German is like saying humans are evolved from chimpanzees. English comes from a mixture of Old Low German, Old East Norse, Old Frisian, and old Norman French; all whilst German is derived from Old High German and shares much more similarities with the long extinct Eastern Germanic languages in comparison to the Western Germanic languages of English, Dutch, Frisian, etc...
I dumb things down for people so that the majority understands. I know how I say it can be seen as not fully true but then again it's dumbed down quite a bit. I explain enough for basic understanding, to avoid stupid questions.
We are the machines of our DNA, and I believe we walk the steps of our DNA also. With that said, German is very acceptable to me. Kind of thinking about it, we truly don't keep the same tastes and attitudes throughout our whole life. Sure we change based upon situation, but our reason is carried throughout.
The dots don't actually lengthen the letter, they... They're just a part of an individual letter. Like in German you have the double S and umlaut-U (Ü) letters. Also, A and Ä (+ O and Ö) sound quite different... So the dotted A doesn't have anything to do with the "dotless" A.
English has some of every language you can think of, we're a hybrid language, which makes our language sooooooo hard to learn, that and everything in our grammar breaks rules, it doesn't make any sense. IMO and alot of foreigns i know, say that english was the hardest language they have ever learned. :D
@germanmetalgurl16 I always loved how european languages have roots in each other. makes learning them alot easier, cus you can listen for more familiar words and get the gist of what's being said half the time ;D
Mandarin is its own language thought. In English you have German, Greek, french, just to name a few influences.. For example, does the "S" always make the "s" sound? No, and there is atlease one other sequence of letters that make the same sound ("ce"). In languages like mandarin, or Japanese (cause I know a little of the latter), words are spelt how they are said, English doesn't do that and that makes it more complicated to learn.
@DarkestItachi Why, sure, I'd love to =D I'm glad to help someone and, well, you can't get to learn a language that easy if not in school... btw, you're having german class or something? Also, you have any chat programs like MSN? That'd make it a lot easyer
@Terminatrix6 I am taking French in school and I'm pretty good at it, but I'd like to advance more. I'm interested in German too. Do you know any good websites or programs that can help you learn languages? Preferably free ones?
I;m with wolf, english is probably the hardest language to learn, everything breaks rules and we don't have those little lines above our letters to let you know if they're short or long vowel or whatever.
all of the Americans are saying how hard German is to learn and actually its not THAT hard most of the words sound like English i'm 12 and 3 months ago I started taking German and I understand most of this song btw im not trying to be mean to anyone :)
yeah, it's pretty damn easy...I'm a vocalist and even if I don't know the language primarily, I can still practice and translate it like the best...it also helps being raised in a German-American household because I already have a damn good accent... I can never roll my 'r's though...my tongue is too damn fat! Dx
MadYuu Well yeah, i know the roll may not be needed, but just for the sake of being through, y'know? Especially since I've heard of those with Spanish origins pull off rolls all the time for their accent, and I've always loved speaking in accent from time to time.
Right, right... But is it hard enough for English to be the hardest language? I saw an article on The Economist some years back. It was stated that "people tend to call their own native language the hardest in the world." The Economist is an English magazine, but English was said to be "simple." German was said to be harder because of its lack of logic at times. Like Mark Twain said: "Why a young lady has no sex, but a turnip has." Finno-Ugric languages were also mentioned.
@XrockerXmosherX Even if I'm a Finn I really can't agree with you comparing Finnish and English and saying that their grammar is equal... I'm 100% sure that our language is a lot harder than English... Dunno how far you've progressed in your studies but I'm sure it's gonna be real ''fun'' learning to speak Finnish once you're studying the harder parts :D

yeah, it's pretty damn easy...I'm a vocalist and even if I don't know the language primarily, I can still practice and translate it like the best...it also helps being raised in a German-American household because I already have a damn good accent...
I can never roll my 'r's though...my tongue is too damn fat! Dx
***** lol nice
+AHS Valor (Val) Roll your R? Doubt you will need that ability to speak german. The german R is pronounced different, but I wouldn't say it's rolled.
MadYuu Well yeah, i know the roll may not be needed, but just for the sake of being through, y'know? Especially since I've heard of those with Spanish origins pull off rolls all the time for their accent, and I've always loved speaking in accent from time to time.
In my German classes you have to roll the R because if you don't you cant pronounce words like Ratte (rat).
i want to learn German so bad!!!!! it's suck an amazing language!!!! it's so interesting!
@XrockerXmosherX yeah and German grammar is so different...so difficult...ich weiss nicht.
Oomph
Right, right... But is it hard enough for English to be the hardest language? I saw an article on The Economist some years back. It was stated that "people tend to call their own native language the hardest in the world." The Economist is an English magazine, but English was said to be "simple." German was said to be harder because of its lack of logic at times. Like Mark Twain said: "Why a young lady has no sex, but a turnip has." Finno-Ugric languages were also mentioned.
@MiracleofaSong You and me both. : )
Well romantic language is what you call a language that originated from Latin
Romantic doesn't necessarily have to be associated with love
i love the guy who sings this. how do you pronounce the funny, B-shaped thing?
@4everUSNavy They are from Axis Powers Hetalia, just watch the anime and (hopefully) you'll understand who am I talking about ^^".
