I missed the unconditional support from the old generation, that we normally get from Bumi. Instead he sees his old friend just like everyone else. It's just constant demand and criticism, which of course there's this side, but I feel from his old generation to have Bumi as this "I got your back" character really gave him a bit of respite in this crazy new world that he has to cope with. This Aang feels constantly challenged and stressed but somehow working through it. which makes him feel unrealistic imo. The many scenes where he expresses doubt don't take when there's no consequence to them.

Yeah I had this issue with Bumi as well. Before this episode, all the characters felt like the originals but Bumi was just very disappointing.

      > I missed the unconditional support from the old generation
This is 100% one of my biggest complaints too, fair enough it could make sense that we're seeing that side of these characters because they've been exposed to the war and Aang hasn't but I much prefer the tone of the original series, some of the criticism feels like it goes to far when those characters are addressing Aang.

    • @hemmojito
      @hemmojito 6 місяців тому

@@GormGear ...considering Aang didn't really choose to leave in this version. He just went out for a stroll to clear his head. Bad timing really.
Unfair but I guess that's the point theyr're making. The world judges its Avatar harshly. (At least I think that's what they're going for)

I think the oma and shu both being women thing is probably just because they wanted to have queer representation in the show and it’s easier to change the gender of minor characters than main characters

Feeling pretty much the same after episodes 3 & 4, though there were some really beautiful scenes with Zuko and Iroh. They are the standout so far.
Episode 4 was a slog for me. The Mechanist, Jet, King Bumi, Cave of Two Lovers, bits of 1.07, extra flashbacks was way too much for one episode.
The Lu Ten funeral scene with Leaves from the Vine playing was really beautiful. All of Zuko and Iroh’s scenes were quite good.
Jet was going well until they changed him bombing Fire Nation civilians to bombing the Mechanist, King Bumi and suspected spies. You totally lose the complexity of there being innocent Fire Nation civilians. Which would’ve paired really nicely with the Fire Nation rebels in the opening. That guy had a white lotus tattoo I think.
Cave of Two Lovers is my favourite episode of the series so it was rough to watch this and feel like it was just wholly unnecessary and kind of wasted here. Also didn’t love how Sokka was more of a believer in the poem and trusting in love while Katara was cynical when it’s supposed to be the opposite. It just keeps feeling like they keep taking away Katara’s hopefulness and gentler side.
Bumi was a mixed bag for me. They did a really good job at the kooky king part but I didn’t like Bumi being really bitter and losing his enlightened nature where he sees things outside the box and the possibilities. Instead of Aang learning the lesson of taking things head on and not avoid and evade, he has to teach Bumi a lesson. Which is ok, but when Aang’s the main character, you want him to be learning the lessons and growing. Bumi isn’t going to be on screen that much in the grand scheme of things, so it’s better he be a wise teacher for Aang.
Interesting that Hakoda is not a science guy and almost seems to scoff at it. Not sure how I feel about that since I liked that he and Sokka shared that. Also odd that they seem to be teasing he’ll have to choose between being a warrior or a mechanist.
Anyway, I’m going to palate cleanse with some real Avatar. This is mostly just making me miss the original.

My biggest takeaway this episode, the Mechanist has a name!!! Don't know if Sai is gonna catch though 😅.
I like the interlinked Jet and Mechanist plot here in Omashu, the resolution was a bit messy and didn't like that Freedom Fighters were gonna blow up Bumi, but overall I think it was reasonably well done.
The Secret Tunnel plot for Sokka and Katara was weird, the badgermoles were too little and they apparently can sense peoples emotions ???? The nomads were right there to play a song for them.
On other note, I loved the flashbacks with Iroh, they were really meaningful e great moments between him and Zuko. One detail they overlooked though and got wrong, they didn't shaved Zuko's hair after the Agni Kai.
Lastly, poor Appa and Momo, so expensive to make, got basically forgotten this episodes, which is a shame.

    • @tabse21u
      @tabse21u 6 місяців тому +3

I honestly felt that the secret tunnel was only there for the song. It felt very fan-service. And I really didn’t enjoy any of the changes there.
Originally it’s such a nice little romance between Aang and Katara, but honestly nothing can be found here.
I miss the fun the nomads bring. The fun of Sokka changing his attitude slightly.
And yes, like wtf about the crystals and badgermoles sensing emotions. I really didn’t get this one. Sure animals can use their sense to sense changes in emotions but than to relate that to love. And Sokka and Katara holding hands just before dying is “love” rather than “fear, anger, resignation, etc” is just a concept I cannot get behind.
Also completely unnecessary change to make Oma and Shu a lesbian couple. Was not needed! You have a more relevant bisexual character in Kyoshi you could have used but didn’t. I don’t understand…

So personally I think having jet and the mechanist coincide was a nice thought on paper, but doesn't pan out as well when you suddenly shove them both into Omashu. Personally I would have kept the mechanist plot, tie his story in with Bumi more, and then, like the northern air temple, actually have the city get attacked by the fire nation. That would lead into episode 4 where you could have them escape through the tunnels, still keeping most of what they did but in a more natural way. And with them headed further north, you could still have room for jet after leaving omashu.

  • @KaypainBeats

The secret tunnel bit was nothing but fan service. They could have simply kept the trio together especially meeting Bumi and not just have them show up at the end

This adaptation is exactly what M. Night's version should have been, but.....that is the best complimant that I can give it.
Its like a really good cliffnotes version of the show. Its like really well cooked unseasoned chicken. Its like Hot Line without the Bling. Its almost there but not there at the same time.
No offense to the kid playing Aang, but he says the lines like he's trying to act. The rest of him looks like Aang but doesn't feel like Aang.
And overall the show has this like a 2010's style of dialog, drab but trying to funny, qwuippy non quips.
I was hoping to feel the humor aspect of this and for me its absolutely not there. The humor is just completely missing, but better than thou whom shall not be named.
Nopbody had any personality except for the portails of Jet, sokka, Bumi, and Admrial Jzaho. Bumi was especially and suprisingly good.
The three best parts of the show was the first 15mins of thr first episode, the Agnkai between Ozai & Zuko, the entire Blue Spirit sequence. But the blue spirit sequence was only good because it was a 95% copy of the original.
A sign of a bad movie (especially bad movies from the esrly 2010's era) always have music unnecessarily playing in the background while important dialog is happening. And the Katara vs Paku fight was slow and awkward.
This was like a Broadway version of the Ember Island players retelling the story

I didn't even recognize Jet in episode 3 until halfway through the show lol. I think if they kept the Mechanist part with the Bumi stuff as episode 3 going into 4, with the final part being the Jet arc, that would of been fine and cut out the Cave of Two Lovers until season 2 where it was suppose to be. Also, it would of hit harder if Sokka and Katara was actually there like they were in the original Omashu episode. And since they only did the duel, it wouldn't of really taken up time to get into the actual freedom fighters episode they could of finished by the end of episode 4. I still overall enjoyed the show, but it seemed like they complicated all of that really for no reason. Episode 4 was the only real head scratcher for me

The characterisation of Bumi was not great.

The cave of 2 lovers was unnecessary in ep.4.

I still need more from Katara especially. I feel like they didn't really know what to do with her. I personally am just analyzing this dispassionately as in Game of Thrones. This all takes place in the same universe and these are supposed to be the same characters but this is the remix, which I wonder how it holds up to a completely new viewer who knows nothing of the universe? Will they be invested in a boy that basically never did anything wrong and is constantly challenged and while expressing doubts in himself still somehow manages all of this? I would be very interested in a reaction from a "regular person" about this show. At this sorta runtime of the original show I was already sold on the story the characters and the basic goals. Idk if this show does that to someone who knows nothing about the Avatar universe. Can it stand on its own or does it fall flat?
