My biggest pro is that like I said before, earning lots of money that doesn’t require college or grad school & I’m able to get rid of items our family & I doesn’t want. My cons are family criticizing me & it eats all of my time.
#1 pro is FREEDOM. I also work a job that I hate like you did. So making more on Ebay so I can quit my job is my number one goal in life. The only con I have is Ebay is a rollercoaster like any other business. One day your sales are great and the next you have nothing. You never know what your income is going to be month after month. Some months are fantastic and other months you can't give the stuff away. But in general I love the freedom and being independent. So I'll take the rollercoaster to be my own boss. It's worth it.
1. Pro - Location Independence 2. Con - You need to keep the hustle game on, it's not a passive income business. (It's hard to describe this as a con, because not becoming complacent is actually key to success, but many begin an eBay business thinking it will become passive income after x# of months. Love your channel, very professional!
Pro - Volume of customers and promotions eBay runs to bring in customers. Can't do that with your own website. Con - Competition and trying to find a profit. Thrift stores raising prices and dropshipping is very competitive.
My worst thing is keeping up with inventory, it's taken over the bedroom. There are totes everywhere just trying to find something is a stresser. The other thing is my husband loves to source however, he's always bringing home items he knows nothing about. There are holes in clothes, no size tags, chipped dishware. Sometimes, though he does bring home a good home run so, I don't stop him. My sister visited over Christmas she thinks I've lost my mind. Wants me to stop all this Ebay stuff and go to school. As long as my husband is standing by me I don't care what others say. I only started selling seven months ago so, I'm learning. I am making money though. That's all that matters.
Do you have a slab with no basement? If you can, try sorting things in a closet or make a room strictly for eBay. I live in an apartment and that’s what I have to do. I also have bins for some of this stuff. I don’t want eBay taking over the aesthetics of my house too much. Also, maybe you can educate your hubs on looking things up on his phone before he buys. There’s no point in buying things you don’t need and losing money. I guess if you’re doing the goodwill outlets then you’re not losing much but you’re still losing money. Men are the least thoughtful buyers in the entire world most times. 🤦🏾♂️
same here lol !! i sell avon and its taken over the house !! my lounge is like a stock room .. but daughters bedroom is taken over !! and yes u have to keep up with where your stock is so when ppl buy things u need to find it send out !! but i need a seperate store room or something !!
but keep doing it if u like it ... u just gotta try and keep organised ..its wat im slowly trying to do ... maybe label things or find a method that works for you .... i use avon boxes to store it coz they stack up but its still everywhere !! but u can still goto school and do ebay just plan your time wisely and make sure u send things out on time ...write everything down and expected del dates etc ... but u can work your study around it ... and good u making money ! its nice to just know your running your own business so to speak ..but keep up the good work !!
Cathy, that is the SWEETEST thing I have ever heard. What a sweet man to try and help you. My husband supports me too.....but so many people have spouses that do NOT support them.
Negatives 1. Living in an apartment with little storage room. Or even small house or slab. 2. Very time consuming especially if you’re getting started or learning a new product to sell. It’s probably double the time for newer ppl. Even knowing what to buy can double your time. Advanced sellers have a rhythm and finesse. 3. Dispatching items that make small revenue feels like you’re waisting gas and car expenses. Some ppl are making so many sells, they compound their dispatches all at once. I like to get my items out as fast as possible for the buyer either way. That does help seller feedback too. 4. Finding big boxes for first class shipping. Sometimes the free boxes from the post office aren’t big enough or won’t save as much money. 5. Fees, managing overhead, taxes, etc. Positives 1. A lot of freedom to work when you want if you’re good 2. Great to see positive reactions to stuff ppl want.
It can happen pretty frequently. Make sure you discuss with the customer, on record, that you will refund the money when the item is returned. Sometimes that can help you when problems arise. It's always better to cover as many bases as possible!
One of the best overall videos I have watched. This guy pretty much nails the pros and cons of eBay. I am a low volume EBay seller, no more than $1000 per month. I mostly sells things from around my house and left behind in my rentals. It does take a bit of time to sell items and to scale above $2000 per month would make it much more than a side hustle.
Work smarter, not harder. If I'm not going to make at least so much money on something, I'm not going to waste my time on it. Rather than dealing with 10 items I might make $5 on, I look for fewer items that I'll make more money ($20, $30, $40, etc.) on each one.
Anyone wanting to be successful on eBay should be doing this from the start. Go for the big ticket items more. Quality/Quantity. Filler items can be good here and there, but never waste time to a large amount of small profit items.
Ebay is easy to sell on with low cost but you are correct when it comes to up scale your business. You can do good in ebay but you will come up against a wall. Meaning you can do only so much in a 24 hour period. Especially when you are doing Everything yourself. Amazon FBA, is the next step. That's the way I see it. Thank you for the Video Steve and I greatly Appreciate you Very Much!
One con I would add to your list: cleaning the used item. eBay requires used clothing to be clean when its sold. This means you have to launder the items when you bring them home. Sometimes they have cat hair or dog hair, stains, etc. Unless you have a separate washing machine for your eBay finds, you can get pet hair onto your normal household clothing (if you don't have a pet). Also, cleaning shoes or handbags can be a nasty job. If you want to get the best possible profit out of your item, it should be as clean and photogenic as possible. Just my .02 .
Really nothing bothers me except when I get an item that I’m really excited about and it just sits there. Right now I have a bunch of fails sitting in a big blue Salvation Army bag just because I can’t stand looking at anymore, although they are still sitting in listing purgatory. It’s like a dead body living in my house. Blue body bag ha ha. I was a middle school teacher in the inner city before I walked out and never went back, so compared to that hell, pressing a few buttons and snapping a few pictures is like paradise.
I had this issue starting out, but I’ve come to learn buy at the very lowest for two reasons. One being, the item doesn’t sell as you’ve said. & Two, simply for max profit OR less lost on said item. We live and learn, EBay is tricky to tackle at times.
Pro: using your own pictures that are better than many of Amazon's default pics for a listing. Con: creating a new listing for every item takes a long time.
Love this video! I totally agree with your words. For me the Cons is taking photos uploading all the stuff etc. Very time consuming so I try to have a schedule on what days I have to upload and how many items I'll do per batch per day. I don't want to spend all my time uploading as it takes time. The fun part out of all this, is when my phone goes off with that ching ching money sound on my ebay app and of course that means time to ship. Shipping is the fun part for me. Listing is the pain in the ass for me. That's my two cents on this topic. Sourcing is also not too much fun especially if you strike out a few times. A++
Thanks for this video. It was very informative, and this is exactly what I wanted to know before I move on this new adventure on selling on eBay. Thanks again.
#1 Pro: Gives me freedom to do what I want when I want #1 Con: It's not as cut and dry as "list it and sell it". eBay is a game that you need to learn to get maximum sales out of
Wow this video gave my anxiety!!!! LOL so true about how much time it takes to clean your items, take quality pictures, measurements, write a description to appeal your customers UGH. I like being at home but the hussle is real 😅
I have only been selling on eBay since Sept 2017 and I already feel over whelmed, I also work 5 days a week and some week ends, have a booth space to keep up with, a little on Etsy. Plus my home, husband and mother in law to keep up with. Just very over whelming, need more hours in the day.
Yes, Steve I come from a long Culinary background as a lady cook but retired a few year earlier then expected and now do this on the side with some amz. to supplement my meagre Social Security. Doing better so far this month then ever ! I do also retail arbitrage and at times a much better deal as our thrift stores here in Seattle are very pricey...just had to cancel an order I had donated a coat and still had it listed so had to cancel the order and am getting a return on some mens shoes which did not fit. It's smart always to leave some emergency life events in your paypal account. You will make mistakes as I have but we all do so just keep on plugging along and do your best. I'm proud of you trying all sorts of different things....you are great at interviewing ! I'm a Gemini too ! Corie in Seattle
I would say the boredom argument is completely subjective based on individual experience. The clutter argument assumes a seller's lack of organization.
Patiently waiting for a new site to sell on. Ive had Ebay/Paypal sales over $1,000,000 over a 20 year span. Its now "China Bay". Total, predatory company. Absolutely disgusted with them.
About a month ago I got the ‘thrift’ fever: got all my unused nikes etc from my storage, spent about 1K on inventory, and only then sat on my desk to run the numbers and draw a business plan ( Numbers don’t lie) I was like ...oooops. If ur are 23 yo have a so so car payment and an $800 rent $5K sounds like a fortune. In CA where a pair of shoes is $9.99 ( nikes are $14.99) shirts $6.99 and coats/jeans $19.99 Im outbided before getting to the GWill cashier. Im thinking of listing my about 400 items for whatever price before be ‘buried alive’ under my lots of plastic boxes and go back R Estate. It pays well but it is PAINFUL. I was excited thinking that I could make $150 having fun on ebay:0( Id be happy with...$100k...$75k. I really enjoy thrifting. Bummer.
yeah its good i goto cafes and bring my stuff there to do ... i sell avon but bring out the envelopes...stock etc and process orders when incafes ... but then i take a break and do some writingcoz im also a writer but yes quite repetitive lol and boring
I'm a smaller ebay seller and in high school. I've had a lot of success and want to grow, but heard about the $20,000 and 200 transaction limit before paypal submits a 1099 form to the IRS. Do I have set myself up as a business to go past the limit or what do I have to do? I'm young so I have never done any taxes or anything before and need to learn.
hi .... what are u doing now if u dont mind me asking ? are u still doing ebay ? or selling on amazon now im thinking of it but not sure since the only one that can help is my daughter whos 18 and i ask her to help and shes done like little things like putting stamps on envelopes and thats fine but theres so much more to do and and you say unless you have a store room or employees i not sure if amazon ill be able to handle on my own ... unless my daughter really gets going
I have a few separate streams of income, from many different things. It is still worth getting into selling on eBay and Amazon both, depending on how hands-on you want to be with your inventory. If you don't want to do much other than sourcing, Amazon FBA may be a better bet for you!
Rakein prodit great video the question I have for you is I want to start selling products but have 0 experience doing this, plus I work full time 6 days a week, would eBay be the best platform to start for me to hone my skills

I'd love to know what's your #1 pro and # 1 to selling on eBay? Leave a comment below!
Cons are the fees for the stores, and long time to wait for sales. Pro there is no restrictions like Amazon have for selling stuff.
My biggest pro is that like I said before, earning lots of money that doesn’t require college or grad school & I’m able to get rid of items our family & I doesn’t want.

I started on Ebay back in 1998! It was a long, slow process to list a lot of items back then. It's come a LONG way.
