Oh, yes. If you haven't heard Echoes, that is a must. Then, then! Follow the listen of Pink Floyd's Echoes with Rodrigo y Gabriela's :acoustic: version of Echoes. They do an amazing job.
Oh, and if I may suggest, do choose the studio versions of both before delving in to live performances of "Echoes." I believe it helps one to appreciate how the live performances are elevated even higher.
Meddle, Obscured by clouds and Atom heart mother all build the elements that made The dark side of the moon. Obscured by clouds although often criticized is a beautiful complete album.
Agreed on the question of Obscured by Clouds, Andrew. I think it often gets overlooked and dismissed. Possibly because it's a movie soundtrack. And then it would become overshadowed by DSOTM. Indeed, I'd put Obscured in my top 3 all-time Floyd albums. Cheers.
Obscured and Meddle are my two favorite Floyd albums. Discovered Dark Side first and the later albums afterwards, I was so happy when I realized that there was more earlier material that shared some of the same musical sentiments and acoustic elements of a song like “Breathe”, which along with the reprisal, is the song that hooked me.
So amazing to hear that it's been 50 years since that was released! I do believe I hear Nick Mason keeping time with a high-hat but they do keep it in the background. Awesome song, from a groundbreaking album!
Echoes for sure! I used a small section of Echoes on a loop and placed speakers in the widows of the house and played it into the neighborhood on Halloween night. I called it "Echoes of Halloween"
I'm so glad that you are reacting this, it's such a good song. Fearless from the same album is wonderful as well. But above all this, oh my god, you must play Echoes for Nick. It is utter genius. No hyperbole.
Listen to Echoes next please. BTW, Gilmour is in Pink Floyd since 1968, from the second album itself. Syd Barrett is only in the first album and 1 song in second album.
I particularly liked Lex’s reaction to this song. Like me, who bought the album, when it came out, she knows every word and sound, responding throughout. Also great seeing Nick hearing it for the first time and reactions.
If you love PF, Meddle is a must for any Pink Floyd fanatic!!! So different but yet amazing - Others that are a must on this album are San Tropez, Fearless and Seamus. Thanks!!
Great reaction to a great tune!! Must do Echoes! My personal #1 PF track. 23 minutes of pure bliss. Perfectly encapsulates all that Floyd were and were to become (paved the way for Dark Side)
I never heard this one but, I love it!!! Sounds like a Gilmore solo record song. If you haven't heard Animals record, it's so good in my opinion! Nick, man you're so knowledgeable- I love that! AND LEX!!! YOU are so knowledgeable of Floyd!!! So cool!!! Thanks for sharing this! Love what you do! RushToolYesFamily🤗💐😍
Yes ,there is more to Pink Floyd than Dark Side and the Wall...LOL...like you said, most people not from the 60's or 70's for that matter don't know much about their early work. Some fantastic albums to get into are Atom Heart Mother, Obscured by Clouds and Meddle.
"It brought me back to a time..." You both have brought a great number of us back to a time. Memories.... Music does that. A place, a person, a moment... Thanks.
The album is gold..... For some reason I am under the impression that you are in Colorado, if I am mistaken please forgive me. Memories... I built the sets for a one man show in Telluride at the old opera House there.... My Time Ain't Long (about Jimmy Rogers) with Keith Carradine. Thanks for taking me back there.
Nice to watch you two reacting to an early Pink Floyd song. I had imagined that you knew Pink Floyd pretty well, but from what I hear, there may be quite a few brilliant Pink Floyd tracks that you are not familiar with; so I fully encourage you to dip into "Piper at the Gates of Dawn". You have said that you will do "Echoes" and I look forward to that. I remember when I first saw "Pink Floyd in Pompeii" at a midnight cinema. It blew my mind. By the way, I also love you two together, listening and commenting on songs. You recently brought out a video talking about some really negative reactions you had received. Personally, I would never send a negative review to anyone unless they expressed really anti social views. I continue to LIKE and SUPPORT your channel! 😎😍😁
Amazing how the more things change the more they stay the same! Hearing Lex describe her memory of placing that 1st gen iPod into the cradle before laying back to enjoy brought memories of placing the needle on the vinyl record to do the same. Fascinating how while technology changes the recollections and anticipation remain exactly the same.
Love this album, after "one of these days" this side just mellows out into lovely folksy prog. "Fearless" is probably next up for you, I've probably listened to this more than any other Floyd album, it touches the soul. I think your the 1st to react to this album side!
Psychedelic folk is probably the correct term. It is pastoral, acoustic and dreamy. Reminds a bit of the songs of Nick Drake. Similar Pink Floyd songs as A Pillow of Winds are Cirrus Minor (on More), Grantchester Meadows (on Ummagumma) and If (on Atom Heart Mother).
In fact, this song is mainly written by Gilmour - as is the wonderful "Fearless" on this album. Your personal connection to this song really comes through. It is that what makes popular music (in its widest sense) so much more than just pop music - the emotional connection 🙂
Meddle is such an underrated album. Everyone always raves about Dark Side and The Wall but this has always been my favourite. You can really hear the transition between the 60’s hippy band and the 70’s stoner band happening throughout this album. Classic!
This wonderful album followed a tremendous 'Atom Heart Mother' record that even with Waters and Gilmour denigrating it (AHM) a bit still holds as a classic. Nice choice of tracks Lex.
The album "Meddle" was my first proper experience of Pink Floyd. Yes I had heard two singles, both I loved - "Arnold Land" & "See Emily Play" as they were chart hits, and on England's 'Top Of The Pops' which was the major pop music programme at the time and always did the top 20 singles chart. However they were just another pop group releasing pop records. Albums and album tracks was a totally different experience and at a friends house a track called "Echoes" was put on the turntable. I was still at school. Songs were a few minutes long, so as this continued & continued it was like ... What on earth is this ? Totally blew me away. Never happened to me before. How can a track be that long ? The entire side of an LP ! Wow ! This was also the track along with "One Of These Days" that Pink Floyd found their sound we all recognize today, throughout their music History from that point. This is why "Meddle" with "Echoes" is so iconic.....and an absolute must if not yet heard. The two singles I mentioned is with Syd on vocals. I still have the the 7" vinyl from the 60's . No surprise both rode high in the charts.... & A Pillow Of Winds is a lovely track. Thankyou for another great reaction and looking forward to "Echoes" - Oh Nick, you have no idea what awaits you. I have a feeling you will just have the best trip. Lol - The cover is an ear under water with ripples "Echoes". X [ You have to open a gatefold album to see it in full ]
Echoes was the first well known album that I bought at age 12 or so. Had forgotten how lovely this piece is. Thanks for the reminder! Yes it's 50 years old--something incredibe happeeed i the '70s. Levels of lyric writing, composition and playig skills just...went to another level. Pink Floyd, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Steely Dan, Alan Parsons Project, later parts of the Who.
UmmaGumma (1969) and Meddle ('71, from which this song Pillow of Winds comes) are my personal fav Floyd lps... It was these 2 albums where the musical soundscapes that characterize their later work is first revealed, IMO. Atom Heart Mother ('70) fell between those 2 albums, and is fantastic too, despite your childhood recollections! Syd Barrett was "retired" from the band well before Saucers Full of Secrets was released in 1968.
The original Echoes on Meddle is an absolute masterpiece. However for a reaction video it is the entire side 2 and might be a bit long? However Echoes Live at Pompeii 1972 where the guys play in an ancient Roman Amphitheatre with No Audience is cut in two parts. With the "sound effects / sound scape" section in the middle reduced So purely for reaction video Live at Pompeii might be a better, plus you get to see the guys play😉
Lex listen again for the High Hat…This is the most beautiful mixture of guitars - floating on the breeze that I’ve every heard. Been listening to this for 40 years and it just gets better every time!
Gilmour's vocals generate a feeling of comfort and warmth especially when the subject matter is about the experience of a night's sleep. Play this song to anyone with insomnia and they might learn to love sleep again.
The album cover picture continues on the back of the album so you had to open it up fully to see the whole picture and it is an ear which makes sense if you keep echoes in mind.
Great reaction you two. I'm not asking. Just hinting. I would love to see Nick. And Lex react to White Witch. They only put out 2 albums in the 70's. At one time you had to put in a special order to even get them. I can hope. Take care and God Bless you and yours.
Meddle is one of Floyd's best albums (Meddle and then Obscured By Clouds were released before Dark Side of the Moon). Syd Barrett was only on the first two Floyd albums (Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) and only one track on Saucerful of Secret (1968); Gilmour joined the band in 1967 and was on their second album Saucerful). Barrett was out of the band by the time they recorded Ummagumma (1969) and their soundtrack for a movie called "More" (also 1969). You should listen to Atom Heart Mother (1970) again, it's different but has some great music on it. Obscured By Clouds (1972) and "More" were both move soundtracks, and although they have bits and pieces of instrumentals, there are some fantastic Floyd songs on them.
It's a great album. Often overlooked because of Dark Side. But it's a great album. Nick mentioned "Atom Heart Mother". It's my favorite album, just saying. "A Pillow Of Winds" is beautiful. A pastoral masterpiece really. (The cover is an ear)
Here are six VASTLY UNDERRATED masterpiece songs of Pink Floyd that need a reaction. 1) See Emily Play (1967-early single), Paint Box (1967-early single), Julia Dreams-(1968-early single), Green is the Colour (1968-More), Cymbaline (1968-More) and Louder Than Words-(2014-Endless River).
I came in with "Arnold Layne" (1965) and if you want a real treat watch David Bowie perform it (and "Comfortably Numb") live with David Gilmour and Richard Wright. "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" changed my life :)
It's cool that you liked this one! To me, it's an epic song, as it's my favorite Floyd song. It isn't as diverse as 'Echoes', which I also really like. But this song hit me in a sentimental and soulful way, right from the beginning when I heard it in the 70s.
Lex and I must have the same sleep habits. It’s usually Meddle or the deluxe version of Dark Side which plays the original studio recording preceded by a 73 live version of the album. A soothing way to drift off at the end of the day.
Very cool, Nick hears Pillow of Winds. Nick Mason was in there toward the end just with the high hat cymbal. Next I recommend Grantchester Meadows from the Ummagumma album. It is a lot like Pillow of Winds, very mellow and acoustic. You will both love it.
GRANCHESTER Meadows is stunning - it’s in Cambridge U.K. and a much loved haunt for university students. Rupert Brooke had a home there now owned by the dreadful novelist Jeffery Archer. The track captures the place brilliantly and features early experimentation mixing the live sound of birds with the studio track.
Beautiful thing! If you listen again and carefully, Nick Mason occasionally strokes the cymbals. They don't play drums at all in "Welcome to the Machine" on the album "Wish You Were Here".
Oh yea, I forgot about this little gem. Another different style song on that album is San Tropez. You know there's another 70's prog rock band you should REALLY check out is FLASH and the album is called OUT OF HANDS and the first song you should hear is Psychosync. You will love it. And I hope your still going to listen to more Gentle Giant, starting with Cogs in Cogs from the Power and the Glory album. I swear you won't regret it!!!
My favorite Floyd albums ( in no particular order): Meddle, Atom Heart Mother, Animals and Wish You Were Here I can understand how difficult it may seem to listen to A.H.M but I promise you it’s an amazing and cerebral ride!! You’ll love it 😃😃😃
Syd Barratt effectively left after/mid Saucerful of Secrets, their 2nd album, which is when David Gilmore joined. Your Floyd starts with Umma Gumma, then Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Obscured by Clouds then DSOTM, Wish you were here etc.
I’m not familiar with this one guys, but it instantly hooked me in. I must admit, the only album I knew anything about prior to Dark Side was Ummagumma, due to having older sisters with good taste! Hehe Thanks for turning me on to this one!
Creo que Meddle y Obscured by Clouds (soundtrack que sacaron en el 72, un poco antes del Dark Side) son completamente escuchables para sus gustos. Otras canciones previas que podrían gustarles de discos previos son las siguientes: Atom Heart Mother: If y Fat Old Sun Ummagumma: Grantchester Meadows y The Narrow Way, Part 3 More (soundtrack): Cirrus Minor, the Nile Song, Green is the colour, Cymbaline, Dramatic Theme A Saucerful of Secrets (disco con Syd Barrett y Gilmour): Set the controls for the heart of the sun (en estudio o pueden intentar versiones en vivo de Roger Waters como solista) The Piper at the gates of Down (el único disco con Syd Barret en su totalidad): Astronomy Domine (pueden intentar las versiones en vivo de PULSE o de Gilmour como solista) y quizá The Scarecrow. Lados B y rarezas: Paintbox, Point me at the sky (casi un cover de the Beatles), Julia Dream. De ahí, el paso a canciones un poco más raras, es más sencillo jeje
Rick Wright is singing with Gilmour as he often did on the earlier material. Obscured by clouds has great songs on it. “Stay” is one of their best tunes.
I have the same problem with the Syd Barrett era of Pink Floyd. Even in the Seventies, I thought it sounded dated and odd. However, Meddle was when PF really started to discover their musical direction, IMO.
Love this pick by Lex, I too have emotional feeling about that song and Meddle as an album, I remember I was in 8th grade when I bought it and i had to choose something for an art project in school. I decided to do my own version of the cover of the album, and there were even actual differences in color and clarity between the covers I saw in stores later on. Well, I dont know whatever happened to it though. I *thought* you were blinking a bit Lex
No Sitar on any Pink Floyd album. This is David playing slide bottle neck guitar and Fretless bass. I am not sure but I think this is just David and Rick playing organ.
Love the reaction, this is a very different song. A bit of a surprise, there is no sitar in this song. It's all a testament to Gilmour's variety of techniques on slide guitar and pedal steel guitar. Great video!
Like you, I can't get into Atom Heart Mother. Umma Gumma is also (in parts)a bit too weird for me also. However, I love Meddle and like you, Lex, I have used it to help me sleep. Echoes is one of my go-to de-stress pieces, along with The Revealing Science of God from Yes' Tales From Topographic Oceans. And the picture is of an ear 👂
Hi NicknLex. Interesting comparison to the Beatles, I never heard that at the time. 1971. However, I love Floyd's acoustic sound, especially Grantchester Meadows, Fearless, Seamus. I read Lord of the Rings to Echoes on vinyl, on repeat, wearing headphones, I was 14. OK! I'm away. Love your channel and reactions. Greetings from Liverpool. ✌️🐝
The members of Pink Floyd have admitted that Meddle is the first post - Syd Barrett album where things really started to click for them musically. Barrett had been the creative force in the band early on. After his departure, they had to work on finding their sound with Gilmour, hence they released a couple of experimental albums prior to Meddle. It's well worth it to check the Obscured by clouds album, which was the album they released prior to Dark side of the moon.
Ozzy Osbourne, Killer of Giants. That's my epic/never forget tune. It blew my mind away and I'll never forget exactly where I was and what I was doing and who I was with the very first time I heard it. If you ever listen to it, listen to it LOUD, and surrounded if possible.
I always thought the middle bit of Echoes went on about 5 minutes too long but other than that, the Meddle album is pure perfection. If you like Gilmours acoustic style, check out the song "Wots Uh The Deal." One of my favorite Floyd songs.
Echoes live at Gdańsk -Ricks last playing of this masterpiece with David. I introduced the band in Norwich and they played the whole MEDDLE album prior to release and ‘premiere’ on National U.K. radio. First time they used quad as well I believe. Side one of ATOM HEART MOTHER is magnificent - alas loathed by both David and Roger so will not be played by either again.
They have just released Delicate Sound of Thunder on DVD and Blu-ray, it is my fave live video. And as for going to sleep to the same album every night, for months it was Roger Water's Amused To Death. Some of Rogers best lyrics. For me, it even rivals DSOTM.
Atom Heart Mother is their most underrated album. Yes, it's not for everyone and it take some times to appreciate it, but once you get it, it's just plainly great! Yes, being high may help, but it's not a prerequisite, but it's true that it's different from anything else they had made.
Recommendation Delicate Sound of Thunder is the first live album by English progressive rock band Pink Floyd. It was recorded over five nights at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York, in August 1988 and mixed at Abbey Road Studios in September 1988.
As other mention, Echoes, from Meddle. It’s a masterpiece, maybe even unsurpassed in their catalogue.
But whatever you do, listen to the "Meddle" version first.
A bit overrated, the length of the song doesn't make it a great song automatically
@@Alix777. Nothing automatic about it, I agree with that part.
Of course it's a masterpiece because 3 years later they remanufactured big chunks of "Echoes" into "Darkside of the Moon."
Echoes is the song that defined pink floyd
I can't stop laughing ...can you play SEAMUS with your dog in the room ? Hilarious
@@tradeladder146 Oh come on man,not even for Seamus...lighten up.
Or even Mademoiselle Nobs?
Oh, yes.
If you haven't heard Echoes, that is a must. Then, then! Follow the listen of Pink Floyd's Echoes with Rodrigo y Gabriela's :acoustic: version of Echoes. They do an amazing job.
I love Rodrigo y Gabriela's version too. It is wonderful!
Cheers.
I agree about Obscured. Too often overlooked.
Meddle and AEM are vastly overrated, although Meddle is a good album. Obscured by Cloud is overlooked for sure, I don't know why..
@@Alix777. Agree with you on all those, Cosi.
Obscured and Meddle are my two favorite Floyd albums. Discovered Dark Side first and the later albums afterwards, I was so happy when I realized that there was more earlier material that shared some of the same musical sentiments and acoustic elements of a song like “Breathe”, which along with the reprisal, is the song that hooked me.

lately meddle has been one of my favorite albums, all of them (except seamus) are total gems
Meddle brings the early style of Pink Floyd to a pinnacle of perfection. Each song is different but good in its own way.
Love this album. Echoes is an absolute must, mind blowing masterpiece.👌👍👍
Echoes for sure! I used a small section of Echoes on a loop and placed speakers in the widows of the house and played it into the neighborhood on Halloween night. I called it "Echoes of Halloween"

Fearless, not if you are and Evertonian. The Liverpool FC kop is the last thing you want to hear. 😕⚽
@@andrewmacardle9872 It is funny that they used the Liverpool Kop as Roger Waters is a massive Arsenal fan.
I echo others request for "Echoes." It is truly a masterpiece. The Atom Heart Mother album is very good as well.
Ditto - also worth it being the Gdańsk version Rick and David last time playing together
Test for . . . Echo? :p
Hell yeah Atom Heart mother is!
Listen to Echoes next please. BTW, Gilmour is in Pink Floyd since 1968, from the second album itself. Syd Barrett is only in the first album and 1 song in second album.

Listen to Fearless great song
I would add Green is the color and seesaw. These all have the same melancholic atmosphere. Great set for a late sunny afternoon
Echoes for sure…arguably their best.
No argument here
ECHOES its long...ya'll love it...especially with the headphones
In fact, this song is mainly written by Gilmour - as is the wonderful "Fearless" on this album.
Your personal connection to this song really comes through. It is that what makes popular music (in its widest sense) so much more than just pop music - the emotional connection 🙂
Both songs were written by waters and gilmour, the lyrics for pillow of winds were written by waters
Syd Barrett is on all of The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and the last track of their second album,Jugband Blues from A Saucerful Of Secrets.
Just beautiful. Just love Gilmores voice and guitar!
If Pink Floyd never did another song in their career other than Echoes, their legacy would have been cemented in our consciousness! A true epic!
It’s lazing by the river on a sunny afternoon music along with Grantchester Meadows and Cirrus Minor…..
You should do Obscured by Clouds (1972, the soundtrack to the film Le Vallee) as well.
Nick Mason said: "I thought it was a sensational album".
I quite agree with Mr Mason here. "Burning Bridges" alone is worth it.
Meddle is such an underrated album. Everyone always raves about Dark Side and The Wall but this has always been my favourite. You can really hear the transition between the 60’s hippy band and the 70’s stoner band happening throughout this album. Classic!

Great reaction Nick and Lex....and what a great reaction from Marley too!.
It's a gatefold picture. Tilt your head to the side, it's an ear, under water, which will make complete sense after you hear Echoes!
Pink Floyd's Themes like this (sweet melodies before DSOTM): Fat old sun, cymbaline, Green is the colour.
Fantastic cover of Cymbaline is by german band RPWL... Extended Version 14 minutes with great guitar parts
💖🌼🔆👍💖🌼🔆👍 hi NicknLex. This is fun... Omg again the memories. The beach, 1971-72. 💗
Visualize lying in a meadow, next to a pond and weeping willow, feeling your soul rise out of your body along with this song and the morning mist.
Dood..Meddle is a MUST....Just listen to it..One Of These Days.... :)
@@grahamhowes6904 Thanks. I did not know it was a real place. Now it's another place in U.K. I'd love to visit.
Beautiful thing! If you listen again and carefully, Nick Mason occasionally strokes the cymbals. They don't play drums at all in "Welcome to the Machine" on the album "Wish You Were Here".
Beautiful track. I can imagine this as a lullaby for you. Thanks for this reaction! ✨🤪
Yes... Steel Guitar... Gilmour plays that.
Great album... do Echoes for sure!
Love it!
ALinCAL
You gotta react to "Fearless". Nick's going to like this one.
A Pillow of Winds is a lesser known Pink Floyd classic - good choice!
My favorite Floyd albums ( in no particular order): Meddle, Atom Heart Mother, Animals and Wish You Were Here
I can understand how difficult it may seem to listen to A.H.M but I promise you it’s an amazing and cerebral ride!!
One of my favorite songs
It’s an EAR sideways and underwater. If you get the full album art open the cover to the full extent and turn it lengthways to see the ear proper!
Otras canciones previas que podrían gustarles de discos previos son las siguientes:
Atom Heart Mother: If y Fat Old Sun
Ummagumma: Grantchester Meadows y The Narrow Way, Part 3
More (soundtrack): Cirrus Minor, the Nile Song, Green is the colour, Cymbaline, Dramatic Theme
A Saucerful of Secrets (disco con Syd Barrett y Gilmour): Set the controls for the heart of the sun (en estudio o pueden intentar versiones en vivo de Roger Waters como solista)
The Piper at the gates of Down (el único disco con Syd Barret en su totalidad): Astronomy Domine (pueden intentar las versiones en vivo de PULSE o de Gilmour como solista) y quizá The Scarecrow.
Nick definitely needs to explore pre-Dark Side Pink Floyd
Have you seen the Live from Pompeii concert? essential for any fan
Good job guys, yes it is a very beautiful song. Very subtle playing from Gilmour..
No Sitar on any Pink Floyd album. This is David playing slide bottle neck guitar and Fretless bass. I am not sure but I think this is just David and Rick playing organ.
I could hear Nick Mason keeping time with the High Hat and also I could hear organ in the back.
Thinking about earlier Floyd you might enjoy . . . maybe "Grantchester Meadow" from Ummagumma? Also, "Set Your Controls for the Heart of the Sun."
Set the control is so so gooood !
Something also more mellow than 'One of these Days' is 'Grantchester Meadows'. It's from before Meddle. Another relaxing one.
This was really really nice….. Next…..ECHOES…. ECHOES…(Echoes… Echoes… Echoes……)
Yezzzz..... the lyrics are so beautiful (as is the rest of the song)
If you like Gilmours acoustic style, check out the song "Wots Uh The Deal."
One of my favorite Floyd songs.
My rainy day song. Echoes is great also. Marooned is a great instrumental track from The Division Bell album.
Obscured by clouds, right before Meddle try it
To me that's their most underrated album
To me this is their most underrated song. It's what it must be like to truly experience the afterlife, for a few moments.
"San Tropez" from the Meddle album is a nice laid back tune.
I love you kids! Greetings from Illinois!
Recommendation
Delicate Sound of Thunder is the first live album by English progressive rock band Pink Floyd. It was recorded over five nights at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York, in August 1988 and mixed at Abbey Road Studios in September 1988.
