This made me feel so much better. My dog Lola used to do that “relaxed” lip licking when I would give her pets and I thought I was making her uncomfortable or anxious. What a relief!
Thank you for posting this. After learning that lip licking was a sign of anxiety, I was devastated to see my dog do it when I spoke to and pet him. I'm happy to see it's relaxation and happiness.
Thank You so very much for your video!!! I have been depressed for over a week thinking that my dog was stressed for the better part of 10 years! It turns out that the tiny licks when i scratch behind his ears is affection! I am almost in tears!
Great. My dutchie does only the last one and i thas confused me a bit.. she also only do it when she is relaxed.. did not lesrn ANYTHING about this lick when getting my education . so even though my heart , gut and experience tells me it is positive the learning during my studies are stuck in my head.. but NOW i can release it and start trusting my gut more. This was indeed fantastic.
I've known a lot dogs to do the relaxed tongue lick. Being petted especially, and one dog in particular (the most prominent one on my channel) when being cuddled or when you start petting her while she sleeps- she'll start to suck on her tongue and make these exaggerated snoring noises. Thank you for posting these videos! I've been a dog parent for 14 years now and am happy to find that they is always something new to learn!
I’m am so glad you covered this, my min pin gets stressed easily but when I am giving her kisses she does the the tiny licks, everything I have seen says it’s a stress thing but she doesn’t look stressed and comes in for more if I stop. whew ! I was confused and didn’t want to stress her more but she looks relaxed
Oh so cute. My dog and does the tongue motion at the end of the demo. Is adorable. I noticed she does it when being cuddled, paid attention etc. It's a content sign I think you're spot on correct yes
Thank you for sharing this, so helpful! I've noticed the second type when other body language seemed relaxed and was trying to understand if I was missing a stress signal.
Thankyou for the info, I have a dog who loves to be scratched and insist on it...he licks his lips everytime, I kept hearing that is a sign of stress, but he does it like your dog does when relaxed...good info to know.
Glad you like the videos, jcloj86. Sounds like you'll need to do some investigation about the pup. What are the accompanying behaviors? Are there any stressful ones? Does he do it every time, like he's just cleaning up his nose and mouth after eating? Or is there something in the environment that happens every time that he might be responding to? Like someone steps toward him to pick up a bowl? Just some questions to help you figure it out.
Great video. I have just taught my dog to do the nose lick on command. Do you think his brain recognizes that there is nothing to fear or feel stressed about? Could this be a positive way to change how he feels?
Accompanying behaviors is key I think. I'm striving for a vid that demos these as stress responses. My dog shows no apprehension to my affection....and appears to seek more.

Same 😅 I thought she was dehydrated or feeling stressed. Whew! Being a a dog mom is no different than raising a baby

I’m in literal tears. My dog just paws away and I feel relieved that she enjoyed when I pet her
I never knew dogs could roll their tongues! Thanks for showing the relaxed and stressed lip licking makes it a little easier to to get it in my head.

your dogs are so cute and well-behaved!
Your videos help me a lot in understanding my dog's body language. Thanks a lot for sharing them here! Also, your pups are really cute! :)
Thanks and thanks! Glad the vids are helpful. And I'm always up for compliments for my dogs!

1:04 My sheltie does that if I pet him before he falls asleep.
Thanks... loving your videos. I have a question. What if the pup licks the lip (first type) shortly/after meal?
Great video. I have just taught my dog to do the nose lick on command. Do you think his brain recognizes that there is nothing to fear or feel stressed about? Could this be a positive way to change how he feels?
I've taught fearful dogs to lip lick in response to triggers for anxiety, and it does have a calming effect.

What about when my dog swallows and licks her lips when I’m petting her on the head
My dog keeps licking his inner rear legs and base of tail? Why is this its becoming excessive every time his alone or I'm not in the room.
Great video i am so exited that my dg loves me so much
Very nicely done!
Thanks, Karen!
im glad i have a similar experience as most the people in the comments: thought my doggie was stressed too hehe
