  • I got a lot of emails from you guys asking about "concrete barriers" going up at the US Capitol. Well, show not tell, so I decided to take a ride up to the Capitol this morning to see what I can see. You'll see some barriers at about minute 3:30 before I take you for a tour around Washington on a soon-to-be very hot Monday.
    Show not Tell.

Good grief, Andrew! Don't you know it was the NEWSEUM, NOT the "National Press Museum"! (My wife worked there from 2008 until it closed and is incredulous in the background here.) It was funded by the freedom forum, a non-partisan foundation dedicated to freedom of the press and freedom of speech, but had no ties to the national press club etc. The saddest thing about that building is that they (Johns Hopkins) had to go to great lengths to remove the etching of the First Amendment so painstakingly chiseled into its front facade when they - the private Newseum - built that edifice, that whole building, just before the crash of '08.
When they removed that facade, the First Amendment, that said everything about our country today. They might as well have stuck a sword through it.

If Penguinsix had continued riding off the Capitol grounds, without changing direction towards the White House, he might have encountered the Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism During World War II.
That memorial honors the Japanese American soldiers who served in World War II. Two racially segregated military units of Japanese American soldiers fought unusually hard in Europe. Other Japanese American soldiers served in military intelligence units in the Pacific. Since the Japanese American soldiers spoke the Japanese language, they could easily question prisoners of war, or translate messages which the Japanese military sent, which had been intercepted by the United States military.
The memorial also honors ordinary American citizens of Japanese ancestry who were wrongfully locked up by the U.S. government during the war.
The memorial is located on a piece of the Capitol grounds which was transferred to the National Park Service when the memorial was built.

Well, in my younger years I thought the internship of the Japanese in the US was unjustified, I have since modified by thinking. In the 7 December attack, a Japanese pilot ditched his aircraft on the Islands and he was taken in an protective by "natives" of Japanese ancestry. IOW: there was good reason to not trust even the native born Japanese people in the US. What they endured was only a tiny fraction of what the typical draftee endured.
In retrospect it seems to have been a mistake but "a seemed like a good idea at the time."

Penguinsix rode by the Library of Congress, which is adjacent to the U.S. Capitol. The Library of Congress has 3 basic functions. It serves as a non-partisan research service for Congress, and maybe for other top federal officials . Members of the public can get a pass to do research there. A separate branch of the Library of Congress administers the copyright system.
The U.S. Constitution says that Congress shall protect the right of authors and inventors to sell their own books or inventions, to keep people from copying their books or inventions. The Library of Congress protects AUTHORS by copywriting books. A separate agency, the U.S. Patent Office protects INVENTORS, and TRADEMARK HOLDERS, by issuing patents, or by registering trademarks. The Patent Office is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The Library of Congress has more than 173 million items, and more than 3,000 employees. It has 3 buildings near the Capitol, and a conservation center in Culpepper, Virginia.

There are 2 Clara Barton/American Red Cross sites in the Washington area, in addition to the 2 sites which Penguinsix just showed up.
Clara Barton had the Red Cross headquarters at her home from 1897 until she died in 1912. This home is located in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Glen Echo, Maryland. The National Park Service displays this home to the public.
American Red Cross headquarters is currently in downtown Washington, D.C., near the White House. Visitors can pre-arrange to visit a museum or historical exhibits at Red Cross headquarters.

I read a book about her.
      She was healthy and strong
      when nursing the ill and
      injured but sickly herself
when there was no one else to
nurse and care for as I recall.
      Amazing selflessness.

There are barriers everywhere, afraid of vehicles driving into the buildings. Fifty years ago, you walked up the steps of the Capitol and through the bronze doors to enter the Rotunda. Not today. Our Capitol is now a fort in the middle of Comancheria.

Why put barricades. Nobody goes there except tourists. It is just a museum.
